I am an aspiring physician assistant (PA) dedicated to increasing representation in medicine by amplifying voices that are often excluded due to barriers in access to healthcare. My goal is to give back to the communities that supported me throughout my journey and, through mentorship, advocacy, and outreach, help expand access to compassionate, equitable care. By investing in communities of color—particularly Black communities—I hope to encourage greater representation within the medical field and contribute to a healthcare system where more voices are present, valued, and empowered to serve.
My interest in medicine has been present for as long as I can remember, and the PA profession allows me to pursue a career that aligns my passion for science and service with my strengths in collaboration and patient-centered care. I will be starting the Physician Assistant program at Case Western Reserve University in Spring 2026.

As a queer Black man, equitable and accessible healthcare means everything to me. Both Black and queer communities have been historically marginalized in society, particularly within healthcare systems. An impactful physician assistant goes beyond treating disease and seeks to understand the barriers that shape a patient’s health and access to care. To address these barriers, a PA must first ask the right questions: What obstacles does this patient face? How can I accommodate their needs with the resources available to me? If a patient’s needs are beyond my scope, where can I refer them for additional support? An impactful PA uses available resources and professional connections to prioritize patient well-being. In my view, empathy, advocacy, and humility are essential qualities that allow PAs to meet patients where they are and deliver equitable care.
Some of my most meaningful experiences in healthcare have come from practicing empathy—stepping into another person’s shoes and honoring their lived experience. Empathy is foundational in medicine because patients bring not only symptoms, but also histories, fears, and challenges. When patients feel seen and validated, trust is built, and trust allows barriers to care to surface. Empathy does not have to be grand; often, it is expressed in small, intentional moments. While working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, I cared for a resident who could no longer communicate verbally. By exercising patience and attentiveness to nonverbal cues, I was able to understand his needs. I could feel the sense of ease and comfort that came from being heard. Moments like these remind me why empathy is essential to effective patient care and why I aspire to become a PA.
An impactful PA is also deeply committed to service and equity. The PA profession was founded on expanding access to care, and that mission resonates strongly with me. During my time working as a community engagement manager for an organization partnered with Medicaid insurance, I gained exposure to systemic barriers that many patients face—barriers I had not previously encountered. In that role, I planned health and wellness–centered events aimed at uplifting underserved communities. Additionally, through my work at Affirmations, a nonprofit dedicated to creating safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals, I committed myself to fostering environments where people feel supported and empowered. These experiences reinforced my desire to use my skills to serve marginalized communities and solidified my path toward the PA profession.
Humility is another essential quality of an impactful PA. Medicine is a field defined by continuous learning, and humility allows providers to recognize both their strengths and areas for growth. Through my varied professional experiences, I have learned the importance of stepping into unfamiliar roles, reflecting on my performance, and applying those lessons moving forward. Humility fosters openness, collaboration, and self-awareness—qualities that ultimately benefit patients. I recognize that I will never know everything, but I am committed to learning from colleagues, patients, and experiences to better serve those in my care.
Medicine is ever evolving, and advancing equitable healthcare requires empathy, humility, and a commitment to service. These values guide my journey and shape the kind of PA I strive to become. As a future PA, I will carry these qualities with me, working to make a meaningful and lasting impact in the communities I serve.
