      Bright Lights Scholarship
Growing up as a girl in a low-income household in a small rural town in East Africa, it was often challenging to study what I liked (Mathematics and Science) due to stereotypes against girls pursuing STEM-related subjects in school. I was always the disobedient child in the family. My mother, who didn't even complete primary(elementary) school, often told me that first-born girls were meant to stay home and help take care of the family. But I knew I wanted more for myself. I knew I wanted to break free from these societal expectations and pursue my dreams, no matter how difficult it might seem. So I worked hard, and eventually, my efforts paid off. I was awarded a full scholarship to attend a prestigious girls' catholic school in Dar es Salaam, where I excelled in my studies and developed a deep love for Mathematics and Science. After more hard work and commitment, I was able to earn another full scholarship, this time to study at Tufts University in the United States. This was a dream come true for me, as it would be the first time I ever left my home country. At Tufts, I am studying Computer Science and Mathematics and have recently become passionate about Machine Learning. Alongside my coursework, I am working as a research assistant, assisting in Machine learning projects which continue to make me increasingly curious about artificial intelligence. During my journey, I've faced not only academic challenges but also significant financial burdens. In the summer, I underwent a gynecologic medical procedure that, while essential for my health and well-being, brought unexpected humongous expenses that continue to strain my finances and take a toll on my mental well-being. These financial challenges have impacted both my academic performance and my social life. The financial assistance I am seeking is not just about monetary relief; it's about the potential to profoundly transform my life. It would provide much-needed respite from the crushing burden of medical bills and related expenses, offering me the lifeline to regain my academic focus and rebuild my social connections. I want to emphasize that this support is not only an investment in my financial stability but also in my overall well-being. With your assistance, I can continue pursuing my dreams with renewed vigor and determination, allowing me to create a better life for myself defined by resilience, academic growth, and personal flourishing. Your understanding and generosity during this challenging time mean more to me than words can express. I am determined to make the most of this opportunity to attend college and continue challenging myself, both academically and through hands-on experiences. My long-term goal is to make meaningful contributions to the field of Artificial Intelligence and inspire other young girls in Africa to pursue their dreams, regardless of their cultural or economic background. With the expertise I am gaining through my undergraduate and graduate education, I am confident that I can make a real difference in the world. I plan to maintain excellent grades and complete my coursework for graduation while pursuing more research and developmental opportunities in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to gain even more skills. My hope is that, with the world-class expertise I will gain throughout my education, I will be able to inspire a young black girl somewhere in Africa to follow her dreams and pursue a career in STEM, even if her culture and socioeconomic background seem to make it impossible.
