Bio

Hi, I'm Esther. I am an education major studying at the University of North Georgia. I have a huge passion for history, but I also love algebra. My goal is the teach middle grades (4-8). I think learning is a skill that everyone should fall in love with, and that it is the role of teachers like me who are to help students love the material they are learning and guide them to the point of having specific interest that they will pursue further even into adult life. What makes me stand out from other education students at UNG was that I was assigned to be an exchange student to Vilnius University. While my time there was dedicated to history faculty, I also had the opportunity to be in a pregimnazija within my first day where I also got to learn a little about what being a teacher in the local schools was like. Lithuania is a lesser known corner of the world, so I was tested in my abilities to be open-minded, adaptable, and flexible. The skills I learned has better prepared me for the education world as both come with many unplanned for surprises requiring immense patience and rapid thinking and decision making skills. Furthermore, being assigned to Lithuania for my exchange allowed me to dive into an educational system I knew nothing about previously for both the university level and the middle grades level. Such opportunity allowed me to expand my career possibilities, network with future employers, and grow my knowledge on educational pedagogy.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
In my youth, mental health was much disregarded due to the overall lack of proper education on the subject. Rumour had it that mental health was just a group of people trying to find a problem when there was no problem or that people were just trying to find an excuse to be soft. Furthermore, I was told to ignore the subject, something I later realized was a product of abuse from my parents. During my first term of university, I finally realized the importance of mental health after I lost my grandmother. Her passing made me reflect on the past decade of my life, taking me back to the period of immense depression I experienced after her husband, my grandfather, passed away. This period of life was followed by other life changes, further highlighting the importance of taking care of my mental health. Being able to have intimate conversations with my roommate allowed me to grow my understanding and empathy for others who also might me struggling with hardship, depressions, anxiety, and other mental needs. All my life, I grew up having to be an obedient daughter who fulfilled everything my parents planned for me, but overcoming the fear of standing up and looking for my personal interest led me to broaden my horizons. I never realized how much of a mental toll a person goes through when they spend their whole life trying to please their parents. Being away at university, I was able to hear about various job opportunities that could be achieved from my major allowed me to find careers of my interest, providing me with tangible goals. Having motivators, developed a healthier and more joyful attitude and mindset for me as it gave me something to look forward to because I knew I was working towards something I was interested in and not simply to please parental figures. My first term of university, I ended up breaking up with my boyfriend after my roommate honestly told me how she could tell mentally I would shut down around the guy. After talking with her, I was able to realized how he was causing a lot of unnecessary anxiety and overall was disrespectful, all factors that impacted me mentally whenever he came to visit. This event made me realize I needed to identify honestly factors that impact my mood, motivation, and mentality in order to form boundaries. One of the biggest things I identified from that conversation was that I continued to court the guy because I wanted to show my parents I was happy and okay, when deep down, I was spiraling in a relationship that was backed my peer pressure. I was also able to create new friendships as a result of the break-up and found people who cared about me and my mental well-being. When my roommate ended up moving away halfway through the term, I had friends who check-ed in on me and allowed me to share the struggles that were causing me anxiety and sadness, saving me from internalizing to a point of deep depression. My mental health journey is one with many ups and downs. There are days where I have much joy in me and days where I poker face my smile. But my view on mental health has changed, which allowed me to better understand the world and myself. As I work on my own mental wellbeing, I can now understand why others also need support or therapy, and I can fully appreciate the emphasis from the media and acquaintances. Personally, I have also gauged an acceptance that it is okay to do things that make me happy and aid in mental well-being, be it finding careers of interest or walking away from toxic relationships.

An Orca’s Wish Gunshots break the silence Blood ran into the sea A distressed whale taken captive That’s what happened to me In a small, shallow tank Aboard a moving machine In an isolated space Never to be seen Taken away from my home Distant from my pod Stuck with others of my kind Training by a rod Tiny figures look at me Pouring me frozen fish Lifeless things in my tiny space A salmon chase is my wish The music begins to play aloud Swimming in a tiny space Doing tricks in a tiny tank Knowing this isn’t my place Jumping up and down Twisting and turning like a bee Splashing figures all around Yearning to be free People wave as they pass The stands go empty and black Reprimanded to my cell Wishing to go back Night falls and the air cools Staring at the metal Waiting for another day Learning to be mettle
