      Elijah's Helping Hand Scholarship Award
Life brings about challenges, ranging from small to large. As a lesbian navigating the complexities of mental health and identity, my journey has been marked by significant ups and downs that have shaped my choices in school, relationships, and everyday life. These experiences have illuminated my perseverance and commitment to overcoming personal battles, and I am honored to share my story as part of the Elijah’s Helping Hand Scholarship Award. Growing up in a conservative community, I faced immense pressure to conform to societal expectations. Discovering and accepting my identity as a lesbian was a difficult and isolating process. I was met with confusion, rejection, and prejudice, which took a toll on my mental health. The constant fear of judgment and the struggle to fit in led to anxiety and depression. There were moments when I felt alone, questioning my worth and place in the world. High school was particularly challenging, as I struggled to balance my academic responsibilities with the internal turmoil of coming to terms with my sexuality. The pressure to succeed academically while hiding a significant part of my identity became overwhelming. I withdrew from social activities and distanced myself from friends, fearing that they would not accept me if they knew the truth. The weight of these struggles affected my grades and overall well-being, making it difficult to see a positive future. However, amidst the darkness, I found solace in the support of a few understanding friends and a compassionate counselor who encouraged me to embrace my true self. Their unwavering support gave me the strength to come out and accept my identity with pride. I gradually began to rebuild my life, focusing on self-care and personal growth. This journey of self-acceptance and mental health recovery has been transformative, teaching me the importance of resilience and the power of a supportive community. My experiences have deeply impacted my beliefs and career aspirations. Witnessing the struggles faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially those dealing with mental health challenges, has fueled my passion for advocating for mental wellness and inclusivity. I am now pursuing an MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, with the goal of providing support and guidance to individuals navigating similar challenges. I believe that my background uniquely positions me to offer empathetic and effective counseling, helping others find their path to self-acceptance and mental well-being. In my academic journey, I have dedicated myself to excelling in my studies and actively participating in LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups. I have organized events and workshops to raise awareness about mental health and promote inclusivity within my community. These experiences have further solidified my commitment to making a positive impact and creating a more supportive environment for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or mental health status. Receiving the Elijah’s Helping Hand Scholarship Award would provide the financial support necessary to continue my education and further my commitment to mental health advocacy. It would alleviate the financial burden of tuition and living expenses, allowing me to focus on my studies and my mission to help others. More importantly, it would honor the memory of Elijah by supporting my efforts to persevere through personal challenges and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. My journey as a lesbian navigating my identiy has profoundly shaped my life, beliefs, and career aspirations. The experiences I have faced have strengthened my resolve to overcome adversity and advocate for mental wellness and inclusivity. This scholarship will support my educational journey and enable me to continue honoring Elijah’s legacy by helping others persevere through their own personal battles. The impact of sepsis on my life and my family has shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations, driving me to pursue higher education and make a positive impact in the world. The first encounter with sepsis that profoundly affected my life was the loss of my mother when I was 28. She was only 47 years old when she contracted the flu, which escalated into pneumonia and eventually led to sepsis. The sudden progression of her illness and her untimely passing left a void in our family that can never be filled. Her death was a stark reminder of the severity and unpredictability of sepsis, and it motivated me to learn more about this life-threatening condition. Years later, I faced my own battle with sepsis when I was diagnosed with Cdiff infection. The infection quickly turned into sepsis, and I found myself fighting for my life. The experience was harrowing. After leaving the hospital I had to relearn to walk and take care of myself. The road to recovery was long and arduous, and I still deal with the debilitating lasting effects of the illness. The physical and psychological toll of sepsis has been immense, but it has also taught me the importance of perseverance and resilience. Additionally, my daughter has battled multiple rounds of sepsis due to underlying medical issues related to prematurity. Watching her endure the pain and uncertainty of this condition has been incredibly difficult. Her strength and courage have been a source of inspiration for me, reinforcing my determination to support others facing similar health challenges. Living with the aftermath of sepsis has shaped my beliefs about the importance of health and the need for effective healthcare and support systems. My goal is to provide support and guidance to individuals facing significant health challenges, including sepsis survivors and those dealing with chronic illnesses. I believe that my personal experiences uniquely position me to offer compassionate and effective counseling to those in need. Pursuing higher education is crucial for me because it represents an opportunity to overcome the limitations imposed by my health challenges and to achieve my academic and career goals. It is also a way for me to honor the memory of my mother and to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Higher education will equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to support individuals in their health journeys and to advocate for systemic changes in healthcare.
