Bio

Hello, my name is Essence Walton. I was raised in a single-family household with a wonderful mother who did her best to make ends meet. Joining bold.org has provided countless scholarship opportunities that I am so grateful to have to bridge the financial gap. I love dance, art and music. Throughout my high school career, I participated in the honor choir, LMEA Music festival, and color guard. I assist with teaching choreography to new color guard members as well. Taking dual enrollment courses during my high school years has significantly increased my curiosity about the next chapter of my life: attending the ideal college. It is important to me to select an institution that aligns perfectly with my academic aspirations and that will pave the way for a successful career. The quest for the perfect college has been somewhat overwhelming, given the plethora of great institutions offering outstanding programs. However, after plenty of research and numerous meetings with my counselor, I have determined that Centenary College is the ideal fit for me. They have a wonderful chemistry program and lab that I am excited to take part in. Growing up I struggled with cystic acne and experienced a barrage of difficulty locating medications to treat my symptoms. The struggle created the drive to advance my knowledge of Pharmaceuticals. My goal is to become a Pharmaceutical Scientist specializing in Cosmetology. My dream is to create a clean skin care and makeup line, geared towards the treatment of acne prone women of color.

John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
Success looks like the face of relief to me, you know the one you make after blowing out a huge gush of air, shoulders relaxed, facial muscles at ease. The tension around your heart subsides, and you sleep soundly knowing that you have achieved your goals. Going to college means success, knowing that I have a fighting chance, an opportunity to develop my manifested passions into reality. Growing up in a single parent household, according to statistics, I was more likely to experience poor outcomes with an increased risk of developing emotional and behavioral health challenges. However, my mother worked extremely hard to make ends meet and created a loving environment. Fortunately, her strong work ethic provided for our acute needs but did not leave much financial means to establish a college fund. Despite my financial setbacks, I continue to work hard in school, taking dual enrollment college courses that will go towards my future degree in science. I feel that my resilience to continue pushing forward and taking the steps needed to secure my future has strengthened my character. It has also kept me focused on my goals and I have learned to take nothing for granted. Being a young woman of color, battling acne using conventional medicine is a struggle. Despite numerous dermatology appointments and prescription medications my skin remained resistant to treatment. I quickly realized the underrepresentation in the pharmaceutical world for women of color. Since childhood I’ve always had a love for science. Most kids were out playing, but I enjoyed mixing up various chemicals in my mom’s kitchen, thrill seeking which ones created the best reaction. My goal is to curate a line of clean skin care products, geared towards treating acne prone women of color. I know that this will make a positive impact on the world, and lives of young woman just like me struggling to find products that don't irritate their sensitive skin. Since the age of five I have danced in some form, from tap, ballet, hip hop to liturgical. This led to pep squad and dance line in middle school, and color guard in high school. I felt like these positions required you to put your best face forward, but ironically having acne did not feel like a best face was possible. Utilizing STEM will serve my goal to instill self-love into the community. I strive to empower women by boosting their confidence. Because, when you look good you feel good, and that speaks volumes in how you carry yourself. I plan to pursue a career has a Pharmaceutical Scientist specializing in Cosmetology. My goal is to strive to determine what formulas are working and which need revamping. I believe choosing this career path will allow me to help develop medications, therapies, and methods to enhance established therapies. This will allow me to advocate for change in the pharmaceutical industry and contribute to the ongoing fight for healthcare disparities. This scholarship opportunity is a pivotal key to my success.

Growing up in a single parent household, according to statistics, I was more likely to experience poor outcomes; with an increased risk of developing emotional and behavioral health challenges. Thanks to the good Lord, I am certain those individuals did not have a mother like mine. She erased any thoughts of those statistics and instilled in me a sense of rightness and greatness. Sure, I do remember times where I cried because dads with donuts or father daughter dances occurred at school. I felt left out, unseen and alone. It was hard for a young kid to understand why my father was not there. I also remember my mother lifting my chin, wiping my tears away, saying "baby it is going to be okay, I got you." My mother is a hard-working black woman. She has worked countless extra shifts as a nurse to allow me to take part in events at school. The love and passion that she provides for her patients is unmatched. Her work ethic and love for the healthcare industry fueled my passion to learn, develop and grow. Fortunately, her strong work ethic provided for our acute needs but did not leave much financial means to establish a college fund. Despite my financial setbacks, I continue to work hard in school, taking dual enrollment college courses that will go towards my future degree in science. My mother always encouraged me to take the harder classes, dig deeper and to not be afraid of the unknown. I feel that her will propelled my resilience to continue pushing forward and taking the steps needed to secure my future has strengthened my character. It has also kept me focused on my goals and I have learned to take nothing for granted. Juggling multiple jobs is challenging, but it has taught me that life can be challenging. We must duck, dodge, and roll with punches to succeed. As a high school student, I am limited in available time. I am a senior color guard member with weekly practice and an honor choir member with various commitments. Along with my high school itinerary, I work part-time with an event company, assisting with design and setup of events. My second job is babysitting. I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment knowing parents trust me to care for their children. Going to college means that I have a fighting chance, an opportunity to develop my manifested passion into reality. Being a young woman of color, battling acne using conventional medicine is a struggle. Despite numerous dermatology appointments and prescription medications my skin remained resistant to treatment. I quickly realized the underrepresentation in the pharmaceutical world for women of color. It is important to have diverse representation in STEM careers to lessen the emotional and financial burden that some individuals endure to obtain the correct treatment for their health conditions. My goal is to strive to determine what formulas are working and which need revamping. I believe choosing this career path will allow me to help develop medications, therapies, and methods to enhance established therapies. This will allow me to advocate for change in the pharmaceutical industry, and contribute to the ongoing fight for healthcare disparities, and cultural diversities. Due to the rising costs of education, it is difficult to attend the school of my choice. The friends and connections that I make throughout my journey will enrich my life and benefit me throughout my college years and into the future. After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school, and this scholarship will assist me in continuing to pursue my dreams.

William Griggs Memorial Scholarship for Science and Math
Mr. Griggs' love for science and aeronautical engineering, puts me in the mind of my favorite movie Hidden Figures. It is a true story about three women of color who worked for NASA. They were instrumental in the launch of an astronaut into orbit. It was empowering to see their determination, especially in 1961 during a time of segregation. This movie further inspired my drive to pursue a career in science. Women are underrepresented in STEM, so thanks for your inspiration. Since childhood I have always had a love for science. Most kids were out playing, but I enjoyed mixing up various chemicals in my mom’s kitchen, thrill seeking which ones created the best reaction. My love for science developed into an intense passion to curate a line of clean skin care products, geared towards treating acne prone women of color. I know that this will make a positive impact on the world; and lives of young woman just like me struggling to find products that do not irritate their sensitive skin. I grew up in a single parent household, according to statistics, I was more likely to experience poor outcomes with an increased risk of developing emotional and behavioral health challenges. However, my mother worked very hard to make ends meet and created a loving environment. Fortunately, her strong work ethic provided for our acute needs but didn’t leave much financial means to establish a college fund. Despite my financial setbacks, I continue to work hard in school, taking dual enrollment college courses that will go towards my future degree in science. Boom, Boom, Clap, Boom, Boom, Clap. Buddy, you're a boy, make a big noise, playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday, you got mud on your face, you big disgrace, kicking your can all over the place. singin' We will, we will rock you!!! Though not heavy metal, dancing and stomping in the bleachers to Queen's We Will Rock You, always fired me up before competitions, and kicked off my love for heavy metal. Dance was always an activity that centered me. Since the age of five my mother found a way to place me in dance of some form, from tap, ballet, hip hop to liturgical. I loved every minute of it and appreciated her even more for making a way during difficult times. Dance has always found a way to make me feel alive, light and free. This love carried over into middle school, where I participated in pep squad, graduating to dance line. I'm now a senior color guard member and assist with choreography development. Heavy Metal music is the best genre of rhythms and beats to use when choreographing routines. AC/DC "Thunderstruck", Scorpions "Rock You Like A Hurricane," and Quiet Riot "Bang Your Head" are some of my favorites. Heavy Metal music to me means a good time, fist pumps, and allows dance to do what it does best for me, to feel alive and free. I grew up in a single parent household, according to statistics, I was more likely to experience poor outcomes with an increased risk of developing emotional and behavioral health challenges. As a kid, my mom always called me her "little chemist"; I would gather all the seasoning and anything I could find in the kitchen to mix, just to see what kind of reaction they would make. My mom bought a microscope kit with glass slides for my birthday. I fell in love with researching everything, l also made her regret buying it because she was my research assistant. I have always had a passion for science but developed an intense passion to curate a line of clean skin care products geared towards treating acne prone women of color. I know that this will make a positive impact on the world; and lives of young woman just like me struggling to find products that do not irritate their sensitive skin. Being a young woman of color, battling acne using conventional medicine is a struggle. I mean high school is enough of a battle without raging war on my various cystic acne eruptions. During my latest college tour, I was able to meet with the chemistry professor, and tour the science lab. The excitement I felt learning about the various avenues this lab could take me was overwhelming. Utilizing STEM will serve my goal to instill self-love into the community. I strive to empower women by boosting their confidence. Because, when you look good you feel good, and that speaks volumes in how you carry yourself. I plan to pursue a career as a Pharmaceutical Scientist specializing in Cosmetology. I believe choosing this career path will allow me to help develop medications, therapies, and methods to enhance established therapies. Having the ability to create something that will improve an individual’s quality of life means so much to me. It has always been my desire to help people. My career choice will aid me in doing that. This is an investment in my future and the future of the people I will be assisting. This scholarship will help lessen the financial burden on my family and increase my self-confidence. Despite many dermatology appointments and prescription medications my skin remained resistant to treatment. I quickly realized the underrepresentation in the pharmaceutical world for women of color. This passion shaped my decision to pursue a career as a Pharmaceutical Scientist, specializing in cosmetology. Cosmetic chemists are the scientific professionals who develop beauty products. They help formulate ingredients that can help consumers. They mix raw materials to produce products, conduct pH readings, and test prototypes, i.e., lipstick, makeup powder, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, nail polish, body wash and skin moisturizer. My goal is to strive to be the change in deciding what formulas are working and what formulas need revamping. During my latest college tour, I was able to meet with the chemistry professor, and tour the science lab. The excitement I felt learning about the various avenues this lab could take me was overwhelming. I could explore pharmaceutical composites and DNA and their effects on the human body. Eventually, I can test cosmetic chemicals and one day develop my dream product. Just a flow of pure joy flooded over me knowing that it can all start right here in this very lab. Throughout middle and high school, I performed in show choir, dance line and color guard. Positions where you needed to put your best face forward, but ironically having chronic acne did not feel like a best face was possible. Utilizing STEM will serve my goal to instill self-love into the community. Because, when you look good you feel good, and that speaks volumes in how you carry yourself. I also work part time for an event company, planning and setting up events. I feel that my resilience to continue pushing forward and taking the steps needed to secure my future has strengthened my character. It has also kept me focused on my goals and I have learned to take nothing for granted. Since childhood I have always had a passion for science. Black Leaders Scholarship
A true leader is empowering, empathetic, trustworthy, and genuinely cares for others. There are countless historically infamous, powerful black leaders that I could speak of, but my mother tops the charts in my eyes. She embodies the qualities of what I feel grace a true leader and are important to me. As a kid, my mom always called me her "little chemist"; I would gather all the seasoning and anything I could find in the kitchen to mix, just to see what reactions they would make. One year my mom bought a microscope kit with glass slides for my birthday. I fell in love with researching everything; I also made her regret buying it because she was my research assistant. My mother is a hard-working black woman, and she has made sure that I could participate in about every extra-curricular activity I was interested in. She has worked countless extra shifts as a nurse to allow me to partake in events at school. The love and passion that she provides for her patients is unmatched. Her work ethic and love for the healthcare industry fueled my passion to learn, develop and grow. I am now about to venture off to college and it is going to be expensive. This scholarship would help lower my out-of-pocket tuition expenses and it is needed. I plan to enter the medical field. I will major in Biochemical Engineering, with plans to dive into Biochemistry as well. I believe choosing this career path will allow me to help develop medications, therapies, and methods to enhance benefit-established therapies. Having the ability to create something that will improve a patient’s quality of life means so much to me. It has always been my desire to help people. My career choice will aid me in doing that. Standing on business no matter what obstacles are thrown your way is what empowerment means to me. My mother is a hard-working woman, and she has made sure that I could participate in about every extra-curricular activity I was interested in. She has worked countless extra shifts as a nurse to allow me to partake in events at school. When faced with bullies who attempted to belittle me because of my size, she instilled in me the importance of developing a keen sense of emotional awareness, to learn how to properly express unconditional love and empathy. Along with the knowledge that It is better to educate yourself than belittle or embarrass others for being different. Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
I grew up in a single-family household, where my mother struggled to make ends meet. My mother is a very prideful woman, who would rather do without than to ask for help, but this took a toll on her mentally, physically, and emotionally. My grandmother is a strong Godly woman, who instilled this into my mother as well. For my mother, depression was not a diagnosis that was readily accepted in the black community. She was taught to pray for peace and understanding. My grandmother was not wrong in instilling this belief but missed the importance of allowing the ability to express emotional needs. Whenever my mother prayed yet continued to battle with depression, it led her down the path of "I'm I am going against god's will? " " Is my faith wavering?" This battle further increased her anxiety. It took my mother much prayer to realize that it is not accepting a diagnosis, yet in fact acknowledging that something is not aligning, and seeking the safety of a licensed individual to shine a light on a dim situation. I believe in the power of prayer, but I also realize that the Lord created doctors, therapists, and a community of other healthcare individuals to help us cope. I aspire to be a sounding board for my future children; and allow them the ability to be themselves and express emotions needed to create connections and build trust. The world can be heavy and miserable if you cannot vent or have the proper tools to cope. I feel that by being the change in the black community, this will create future change leaders throughout the world. Thank you for the opportunity. This scholarship will help lessen the financial burden on my family and increase my self-confidence, knowing that my education is secure. I ask that you please consider me for this scholarship award. This will be a blessing to me and in turn will allow me to bless others in the future.
    Book Lovers Scholarship
Everyone should read Atomic Habits by James Clear. This book uses verified and cited sources for complex real-world struggles, broken down into clear, easy to read solutions. It teaches about accountability and provides grid work to obtain your goals. Today, if everyone applied the methods taught in this book, it could create a new more positive social norm, and provide a nondestructive framework for problem solving. I have struggled to lose weight, and Atomic Habits was recommended to me by my mother, as a tool to use to aid in changing my mindset. In the book Atomic Habits, he spoke about the best way to break a bad habit is to make it impractical to do. Increase the friction on the bad habit until you do not have the option to act. Mr. Clear spoke on a situation in which a store owner experienced problems with theft. Cash registers were installed to automate ethical behavior by decreasing the ability to steal. This made the behavior automatic rather than attempt to change the employee. The goal was to develop a way to automate good habits and eliminate bad ones by making one-time choices. A one-time choice requires upfront effort but creates increasing value over time. Weight loss can sometimes be daunting, especially when you overthink and worry about your total weight loss goal. This book encouraged me to focus on getting 1% better every day. Focusing on eliminating the small negative habits creates the overall larger result. Thank you for the opportunity. This scholarship will help lessen the financial burden on my family and increase my self-confidence, knowing that my education is secured. I ask that you please consider me in this scholarship award. This will be a blessing to me and in turn will allow me to bless others in the future.

It’s hard to grab the attention of a high school student, not only grab but sustain it as well; but Mr. Brimage does just that. Mr. Brimage is my high school chemistry and physics teacher. Now these two subjects are not for the faint at heart, the material can sometimes sound like a foreign language. Mr. Brimage is a master of taking the material and breaking it down to an understandable and enjoyable level. He prioritizes helping us with our testing and presentation skills and provides an environment that promotes creativity and fun. This comes in handy since the majority of our year is spent at school. He also offers free after school tutoring if you’re still having some trouble catching on. I could not imagine taking these classes virtually, like we did during COVID. The in-class experience with Mr. Brimage came with a sense of courage and confidence that if you work hard enough you can accomplish anything. Most people would hang their heads in dread at the thought of chemistry, but Mr. Brimage would always find ways to bring excitement and adventure into his lectures and labs. Mr. Brimage has the personality that every teacher should embody. His focus is making sure the student understands but also enjoys the wonders of science. The joy that I experienced using the various tools and knowledge that he provided, gave me the confidence to stand firm on my future career path. Before starting Mr. Brimage’s science classes, I did have a passion for science. I’m so thankful that his humor and high energy teaching style aided that passion to grow even further. As a kid my mom always call me her "little chemist." I would gather all of the seasoning and really anything I could find in the kitchen to mix together, just to see what kind of reaction they would make. One year my mom bought a microscope kit for my birthday. I fell in love with researching everything under the microscope. I also made her regret buying it because she was my personal research assistant most days. As I grew older, I began to battle acne, and using conventional medicine to cure my symptoms was a struggle. I mean high school is enough of a battle without raging war on my various cystic acne eruptions daily. Despite numerous dermatology appointments and prescription medications my skin remained resistant to treatment. My dream is to curate a line of clean skin care products, geared towards treating acne prone women. My goal is to become a Pharmaceutical Scientist, specializing in Cosmetology, and with the aid of Mr. Brimage I now have a clear career path and the confidence that I will succeed.

Growing up in a single parent household, according to statistics, I was more likely to experience poor outcomes with an increased risk of developing emotional and behavioral health challenges. However, my mother worked very hard to make ends meet and created a loving environment. Fortunately her strong work ethic provided for our acute needs but didn’t leave much financial means to establish a college fund. Despite my financial setbacks, I continue to work hard in school, taking dual enrollment college courses that will go towards my future degree in science. I also work part time for an event company, planning and setting up events. I feel that my resilience to continue pushing forward and taking the steps needed to secure my future has strengthened my character. It has also kept me focused on my goals and I’ve learned to take nothing for granted. Since childhood I’ve always had a passion for science. Most kids were out playing, but I enjoyed mixing up various chemicals in my mom’s kitchen, thrill seeking which ones created the best reaction. My dream is to one day be a Pharmaceutical Scientist, specializing in Cosmetology. Cosmetic chemists are the scientific professionals who develop beauty products. They help formulate ingredients that can benefit consumers. They mix raw materials to produce products, conduct pH readings, and test prototypes, i.e. lipstick, makeup powder, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, nail polish, body wash and skin moisturizer. My goal is to strive to be the change in determining what formulas are working and what formulas need revamping. Growing up I battled with acne, and treatment with conventional medicine was a struggle. I’m passionate about pursuing a degree in STEM, with hopes that one day I will curate a line of clean skin products, geared towards the treatment of acne prone women of color. Because when you look good you feel good, and that speaks volumes in how you carry yourself. During my latest college tour, I was able to meet with the chemistry professor, and tour the science lab. The excitement I felt learning about all of the various avenues this lab could take me was overwhelming. Not only would I be able to explore pharmaceutical composites but also DNA and the effects of pharmaceuticals on the human body, and the possibilities from here some endless. This scholarship will help lessen the financial burden on my family and increase my self-confidence. I ask that you please consider me in this scholarship award. This will be a blessing to me and in turn will allow me to bless others in the future.

My grandmother was an insulin dependent diabetic. With the assistance of proper nutrition, and exercise she was able to eliminate insulin from her daily regime. However, upon initial diagnoses, the task of frequently pricking her finger to analyze glucose levels was daunting. Being in the hospital with a glucose of greater than 1,000 was already a difficult pill to swallow. There was also a barrage of doctors and nutritionist flooding her room to discuss disease processes and educate her on insulin and glucometer use. My grandmother left the hospital feeling overwhelmed and confused about most of it. I remember her sitting at the table crying because her fingers were numb from constant glucose testing. After months of misery, she was finally able to get some relief when her endocrinologist recommended the Dexcom. The Dexcom senor is a valuable piece of technology that is essential for brittle diabetics. The Dexcom is a glucose monitor that attaches to your arm and provides continuous glucose monitoring. There is a small sensor that is inserted under the skin on your arm with a sticky patch. The senor is able to frequently check your glucose levels and send the information to a transmitter and a receiving device like your smart phone. This device is a game changer to increase compliance with glucose monitoring and to prevent long term complications. The device will trigger an alert to your smart phone if your blood sugar is going too low or high to allow appropriate time to take corrective action. Given the increasing rates of diabetes throughout the nation, this device would improve the lives of individuals all around the world. It would aid in increased compliance, decreased emergency room visits and happier patients like my grandmother.

The movie Hidden Figures left a great impact on my life. It is a true story about three women of color who worked for NASA. They were instrumental in the launch of an astronaut into orbit. Throughout being teased, belittled and ridiculed these ladies persevered. It was empowering to see their determination, especially in 1961 during a time of segregation. This movie further inspired my drive to pursue a career as a Pharmaceutical Scientist. Some STEM careers fields can be male driven or underrepresented by the African American community. The wonderful women in this movie pushed forward despite it all, and accomplished greatness. As a kid my mom always called me her "little chemist" I would gather all of the seasoning and really anything I could find in the kitchen to mix together, just to see what kind of reaction they would make. My mom bought a microscope kit with glass slides for my birthday. I fell in love with researching everything under a microscope. I've always had a passion for science but developed an intense passion to curate a line of clean skin care products geared towards treating acne prone women of color. I know that this will make a positive impact on the world; and lives of young woman just like me struggling to find products that don't irritate their sensitive skin. Being a young woman of color, battling acne using conventional medicine, is a struggle!! I mean high school is enough of a battle without raging war on my various cystic acne eruptions. Despite numerous dermatology appointments and prescription medications my skin remained resistant to treatment. I quickly realized the underrepresentation in the pharmaceutical world for women of color. During my latest college tour, I was able to meet with the chemistry professor, and tour the science lab. The excitement I felt learning about all of the various avenues this lab could take me was overwhelming. One of the main characters Katherine, in Hidden Figures, was a true lady of STEM, a math wizard. She could calculate literal astronomical units. It made me realize that utilizing STEM will serve my goal to instill self love into the community. Because, when you look good you feel good, and that speaks volumes in how you carry yourself. I plan to pursue a career has a Pharmaceutical Scientist specializing in Cosmetology. I believe choosing this career path will allow me to help develop medications, therapies, and methods to enhance established therapies. Having the ability to create something that will improve a patient's quality of life means so much to me. It's always been my desire to help people. My career choice will aid me in doing that. This is an investment into my future and the future of the people I will be assisting. This scholarship will help lessen the financial burden on my family and increase my self-confidence. Thanks to the good Lord, I'm pretty certain those individuals did not have a mother like mines. She erased any thoughts of those statistics and instilled me with a sense of rightness and greatness. My mom still jokes to this day that anyone could take me as a child, and that I never met a stranger. I know that my upbringing and faith, developed my ability to inspire others to love, learn and trust. This upbringing also spilled over into activities throughout my life such as dance. Since the age of 5 I have danced in some form, from tap, ballet, hip hop to liturgical. This lead to pep squad and dance line in middle school and I’m now a senior color guard member. I take pride in teamwork, from helping others with makeup to making sure they have a ride to practice and events. It’s better to educate yourself than belittle or embarrass others for being different. It's important to develop a strong sense of emotional awareness, to learn how to properly express unconditional love and empathy.
