Ismat Tariq Muslim Women Empowerment Scholarship
My mother’s story of being denied an education has always stayed with me. As a Muslim woman born and raised in Saudi Arabia, and originally from India, I’ve seen firsthand how culture and circumstance can limit opportunities for women. Her unfulfilled dreams became my motivation to pursue my own education and make a difference for others.
Now, as a PhD student at UMass Amherst, my research focuses on intersectionality, Muslim women, and the cultural factors that influence religious extremism. This scholarship would be a lifeline, helping me ease the financial burden of my studies while continuing my mission to empower Muslim women through education and advocacy. My goal is to honor my mother’s dreams by creating opportunities for the next generation to thrive.
Through my research and advocacy, I hope to build a world where stories like my mother’s become a thing of the past, and education becomes a reality for every girl who dares to dream. This scholarship would bring me one step closer to fulfilling that mission.
Beyond my academic work, I aim to create a network of support for Muslim women pursuing education in challenging environments, especially those from underrepresented communities. With this scholarship, I would be empowered to continue my research and build initiatives that directly help these women, ensuring that their stories of struggle turn into stories of triumph and empowerment. The impact of this scholarship extends far beyond me—it’s a step toward changing lives, one girl at a time.
I envision a world where Muslim women are leaders in all sectors—academia, business, politics, and beyond—and where their experiences and contributions are valued. This scholarship will help me build the foundation for that world, equipping me with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to drive systemic change. By continuing my research, I will be able to address critical issues of religious extremism, cultural bias, and inequality that affect Muslim women worldwide.
To conclude, this scholarship would help me not only advance my own studies but also take meaningful steps toward my mission of empowering women through education, fostering a more inclusive and understanding world for future generations. This opportunity will allow me to take one step closer to my goal of being a catalyst for change: supporting young women who need guidance, providing a platform for their voices, and showing them that their dreams are within reach.
Note: Since my mom follows purdah, she is not in my family picture. Thank you for understanding:)
Boatswain’s Mate Third Class Antonie Bernard Thomas Memorial Scholarship
In my daily life, I consistently strive to embody qualities that are crucial for personal and professional growth: strong leadership and communication skills, resilience, unselfishness, focus and determination, and a robust work ethic. These traits shape how I approach tasks and align with my goal of pursuing a PhD in Higher Education, focusing on the impact of religious and cultural extremism on women’s education. Leadership and communication are integral to my routine. I take on roles that require initiative and collaboration, ensuring that team objectives are clear and that every member’s voice is heard. Effective communication is key; I listen actively, provide constructive feedback, and articulate my ideas clearly. This approach enhances productivity and fosters a supportive team environment. Resilience defines how I tackle challenges. Whether facing academic pressures or personal setbacks, I maintain a problem-solving mindset. For example, during a demanding semester, I encountered research setbacks but adapted my strategies and sought mentorship. This resilience helps me stay positive and progress despite difficulties. Furthermore, unselfishness is reflected in my commitment to supporting others. I often assist peers with research, volunteer for community projects, and share resources to help others succeed. Organizing study groups and academic workshops for fellow students illustrates my willingness to contribute without expecting anything in return. This trait aligns with my broader goal of advocating for women’s education, especially in contexts impacted by religious and cultural extremism.
A strong work ethic is central to my academic and professional efforts. I am committed to high-quality work and meeting deadlines, as seen in my thorough preparation for lectures and research. Seeking feedback and investing extra time to ensure meaningful contributions to my field demonstrate my dedication. This work ethic supports both personal growth and positive contributions to higher education. My goal of obtaining a PhD in Higher Education, with a focus on the effects of religious and cultural extremism on women’s education, is driven by a passion for understanding and addressing educational barriers. I am motivated to develop solutions that promote equity and empower women affected by these challenges. The PhD program will provide the expertise needed for impactful research and advocacy. Moreover, to me, leadership means guiding and inspiring others toward a shared vision while creating a collaborative environment. It involves making informed decisions, taking responsibility, and empowering others to reach their potential. Effective leadership requires empathy, clear communication, and a commitment to positive change, driving progress, and addressing social injustices.
In conclusion, the traits of leadership, resilience, unselfishness, focus, and a strong work ethic are fundamental to my daily routine and align with my academic and professional goals. Pursuing a PhD in Higher Education is a deliberate step toward addressing critical issues in women’s education, and my understanding of leadership as a force for positive change motivates my commitment to this field.
Philip and Jacqueline Benincasa Education Scholarship
My academic journey began with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Literature, where I developed critical thinking skills and a profound appreciation for the power of storytelling and communication. Through my studies, I became increasingly aware of how literature can both reflect and shape societal norms, including those related to gender and education. My research and projects in literature provided me with a nuanced understanding of the cultural and social dynamics that influence educational access and gender roles. During my graduate studies, I engaged in examining limited access to education impacting young women in children's books, which revealed the profound impact of educational narratives on societal attitudes and policies. This experience sparked my interest in exploring how educational systems can be transformed to promote equity and inclusivity. Transitioning from literature to education, I am particularly interested in examining how educational policies and practices can be informed by cultural narratives and research. Growing up in India, I witnessed firsthand the limitations placed on women’s education through my mother’s experiences. Her early marriage and restricted access to education, driven by societal pressures, profoundly shaped my understanding of educational inequity. Her story ignited my passion for advocating for gender equity and educational reform.
As a first-generation international student in the U.S., I am pursuing a graduate degree in Education to develop strategies that address these barriers. My goal is to use the knowledge and skills gained to advocate for women’s educational rights both in the U.S. and in India. My goal is to investigate and develop interventions that address the barriers faced by women and marginalized groups, using insights gained from my background in literature to enrich my approach. Moreover, my career goal is to become a leader in educational reform, advocating for policies and programs that promote gender equity and expand educational opportunities for women. I aspire to contribute to creating inclusive educational environments that empower individuals and foster long-term social change.
Lastly, Higher education plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of women, offering benefits that extend far beyond individual achievement. For women, pursuing higher education is a critical step toward empowerment, economic stability, and societal change. By gaining knowledge and skills, they become advocates for gender equality and social justice, challenging outdated norms and working towards more equitable societies. Their contributions can influence policies and inspire future generations to pursue their goals and break barriers. pursuing a degree in higher education is not just an academic endeavor but a commitment to effecting positive change. I am eager to engage with a community of scholars and practitioners who share my dedication to educational equity and apply my knowledge to make a meaningful impact.
