Bio

Hey there! I am a 19-year-old who is trying to navigate my way into the world. I attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham majoring in Management on a Pre-Law track. Coming from a low-income family, my dream is to focus on my education without constantly worrying about the financial side of things, but I know it won't be easy. As I dive into my studies at UAB, I'm excited about giving back to the communities that have supported me along the way. My main focus is addressing social justice and legal disparities that impact Latino communities. It's a cause that's close to my heart, and I'm determined to make a difference. Being a Latina, I'm fully aware of the challenges faced by Latino communities in the United States. From language barriers to cultural differences and systemic inequities, it's disheartening to witness unequal legal outcomes. That's why I'm driven to pursue a career in the legal system, particularly as an Immigration Lawyer. My aim is to bridge those gaps and ensure that every member of my community has access to the necessary support to thrive. By advocating for social justice, from immigration reform to affordable housing, I want to contribute to a more just and equitable society.

"Échale ganas," a phrase I often found myself being told as a child. The meaning? To work hard and have a goal set in mind for the future. Coming from an immigrant household, the American Dream had been instilled in me at a young age. The dream that every migrant wanted: a better future for themselves and their family. In my case, as my parents would say, being "someone" in life. I would wonder what that meant for years to come, however only now am realizing what that meant to me. I experienced firsthand the lack of representation and role models in my educational journey. Raised in a family where higher education was not the norm, I recognized the importance of breaking this cycle and becoming a sign of hope for future generations. I am determined to pave the way for underrepresented communities to access wealth-building resources and opportunities. As a Latina, my cultural heritage is at the core of my identity. Embracing my roots has instilled in me a profound sense of pride and a commitment to social justice. Despite facing stares and misconceptions, I have remained firm in celebrating my Mexican heritage. This pride has fueled my desire to make a positive impact on my community and beyond. For me, pursuing higher education is not just about personal achievement; it is about breaking barriers and defying expectations. It is about equipping myself with the knowledge and skills to create a better future for those who come after me. This scholarship is more than just financial assistance; it is a symbol of hope and opportunity. With the support of this scholarship, I plan to pursue a career in business management with a focus on addressing the disparities faced by Latino communities. I am extremely aware of the challenges that Latinos encounter in the United States – from language barriers to systemic inequities. Through my education and career, I aim to bridge these gaps and ensure that all members of my community have access to the resources they need to thrive. Furthermore, as a first-generation college student, I understand the unique obstacles that minority students face. I am committed to giving back to my community by serving as a mentor and role model for other young Latinas. By sharing my experiences and providing guidance and support, I hope to inspire the next generation to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact in their communities. My ability to connect with others has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. As an introverted extrovert, I excel in creating meaningful connections and fostering collaboration. I firmly believe in the power of teamwork and effective communication to overcome challenges and drive success. In envisioning myself as a strong candidate for this scholarship, I am proud of my ability to establish meaningful connections. Networking comes naturally to me, and I firmly believe that life is about connections. I am always eager to collaborate and support others because I understand the power of teamwork in achieving success. I am confident that my passion for connecting with others, my commitment to inclusive leadership, and my problem-solving mindset make me a strong candidate for this scholarship. With this support, I am determined to being that “someone” to the Latino community and people of color everywhere, starting right here in Birmingham. It all starts with "echándole ganas" in life.
