At 28 years old, I have found clarity in my purpose and the career I am meant to pursue. I am working toward becoming a dental hygienist, building on eight years of experience in the dental field as both a receptionist and dental assistant. What began as a job grew into a calling rooted in compassion, service, and helping others feel confident.
Working closely with patients has shown me how deeply a healthy smile can impact self-esteem and overall well-being. I have seen individuals walk into the office feeling insecure and leave with renewed confidence. Those moments confirmed my passion for oral health care and my desire to play a direct role in improving patients’ lives.
My educational journey carries profound personal meaning. I am the first person in my family to graduate from high school and the first to attend college. Without a roadmap, I have learned to navigate applications, financial aid, and balancing full-time work with school on my own. These challenges have strengthened my resilience, independence, and determination.
Pursuing a degree in dental hygiene represents more than career advancement—it symbolizes breaking generational barriers and creating new opportunities for my family’s future. As a first-generation college student, I am committed to making the most of this opportunity and to serving others with skill, empathy, and dedication.

Coming out later in life has been one of the most challenging and transformative experiences of my journey. I was married to a man for several years before I fully embraced my sexual orientation. During that time, I often felt conflicted and isolated, struggling to reconcile my authentic self with the life I had built and the expectations of those around me. Navigating this internal struggle required quiet strength, and there were moments of doubt, fear, and uncertainty. Yet, it was through this process that I learned the value of honesty, self-reflection, and resilience.
The experience of coming out later in life forced me to confront long-held fears and embrace vulnerability. Accepting myself fully was not immediate—it required patience, courage, and a willingness to step into discomfort. While the journey was emotionally taxing, it ultimately strengthened my sense of identity and self-worth. I learned that living authentically is not only empowering for myself but also for those around me, as it allows me to model courage and self-acceptance in both personal and professional spaces.
These experiences have deeply influenced my relationships and how I interact with others. I have become more empathetic and intentional, striving to create safe spaces where people feel seen, respected, and supported. I understand firsthand how fear, shame, and uncertainty can affect one’s confidence, and I carry that awareness into my personal and professional interactions. This perspective has fueled my desire to serve others with kindness, patience, and compassion in every environment I enter.
My journey has also shaped my career aspirations. Over the past eight years in the dental field as a receptionist and assistant, I have seen patients who feel anxious, self-conscious, or hesitant about receiving care. Many carry insecurities that extend beyond oral health and affect their overall confidence. My experiences with self-discovery and overcoming personal struggles have strengthened my ability to empathize and connect with patients. I want to become a dental hygienist who provides not only excellent clinical care but also emotional support, helping patients feel safe, valued, and confident in themselves.
Ultimately, coming out later in life has been a profound teacher. It has strengthened my resilience, deepened my empathy, and reinforced the importance of living authentically. It has shown me that challenges can become opportunities for growth and that embracing one’s true self can create a positive ripple effect in the lives of others. I hope my journey demonstrates the power of courage and self-acceptance, and I aspire to carry those lessons into my career and my life, leaving a legacy of compassion, integrity, and unwavering support for those around me.

Education is important to me because it represents opportunity, empowerment, and the ability to break generational barriers. As the first person in my family to graduate from high school and attend college, I have had to navigate the entire process on my own—applications, financial aid, course selection, and balancing work with school. There was no roadmap, no one to guide me, and every step required research, trial and error, and persistence. While these challenges strengthened my resilience and determination, they also made me acutely aware of the struggles that first-generation students face. My journey has fueled my desire to make education more accessible and navigable—not only for myself but for my future children—so they never have to face these challenges alone.
Growing up, I experienced the profound impact of setbacks on confidence and self-esteem. In high school, bullying left me questioning my worth, and later, going through a divorce forced me to rebuild my sense of self and independence. These experiences taught me that resilience is built through adversity, and that education is a tool not only for professional advancement but for personal growth. It has allowed me to reclaim confidence, set goals, and chart a path toward a meaningful future. Education has shown me that my circumstances do not define my potential, and it has inspired me to create a better foundation for the next generation.
Pursuing higher education has also strengthened my career aspirations. After eight years working in the dental field as a receptionist and assistant, I discovered a passion for helping people feel confident through their smiles. Becoming a dental hygienist requires advanced training and knowledge, and furthering my education is the bridge between the supportive roles I have held and the professional I aspire to become. I want to provide not only clinical care but also encouragement and empathy to patients, especially those who may feel anxious or self-conscious about their oral health. My education allows me to develop the skills and credibility to make a meaningful impact on their lives.
The legacy I hope to leave is twofold. First, I want to show my family that perseverance and education can break cycles of limitation. I hope my children and relatives see that higher education is attainable and that guidance, preparation, and support can make a difficult path navigable. Second, I want to leave a legacy of compassionate service in my career. I aspire to be a dental hygienist who improves oral health while helping patients regain confidence in themselves. Ultimately, education empowers me to create opportunities, break barriers, and serve others with knowledge, skill, and empathy. It is the foundation upon which I will build a future of possibility for my family and my community.

My experiences with mental health have significantly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. In high school, I experienced bullying that deeply impacted my self-esteem and sense of identity. During a time when confidence and self-worth are still developing, I struggled with feelings of insecurity and isolation. I often questioned my value and internalized the negativity around me. Those years were painful, but they became the foundation for my resilience. I learned early on how powerful words can be and how deeply they can affect someone’s mental and emotional well-being.
As I entered adulthood, I faced another life-altering challenge: going through a divorce. The end of my marriage forced me to confront vulnerability in a way I never had before. I had to rebuild my confidence, redefine my sense of self, and learn how to prioritize my mental health. It was a season marked by grief, reflection, and growth. Through therapy, self-reflection, and leaning on trusted support systems, I began to understand that healing is not linear. I learned that asking for help is not weakness but courage.
These experiences reshaped my beliefs about mental health. I now strongly believe that emotional well-being deserves the same attention and care as physical health. Mental health struggles are often invisible, yet they influence how people show up in every aspect of life. Because of my journey, I am more intentional in my relationships. I strive to create safe, compassionate spaces where others feel heard, valued, and respected. I am mindful of how I speak to and about others because I understand firsthand how impactful words can be.
Professionally, these experiences have deeply influenced my aspiration to become a dental hygienist. Working in the dental field for eight years, I have seen how anxiety, embarrassment, and low self-confidence can prevent patients from seeking care. Many patients walk into the office carrying not only dental concerns but also emotional weight. Because I have experienced insecurity and self-doubt, I approach patients with empathy and patience. I want them to feel safe, understood, and never judged.
My journey through bullying and divorce has strengthened my resilience and deepened my compassion. It has shaped my belief in holistic care—treating the whole person, not just the procedure. I am committed to becoming a dental hygienist who improves oral health while also helping patients rebuild confidence. My challenges have not limited me; they have empowered me to serve others with authenticity, empathy, and strength.
