I am a UCLA transfer student interested in helping low income minority families through pubic policy. I started my education at Los Angeles Mission College. At this community college I participated in the honors program and enjoyed organizing events with the student governing body. I transferred as a public affairs major where I learn about policy and how policies can better assist communities.

As a young child, I resented the government and was disinterested in politics. I grew up in a Mexican household with immigrant family members and felt that the government didn't represent us. I felt as though the system wasn't in my favor because I come from a low-income, high minority community. I later realized that this is how many marginalized communities feel about their government. However, as I grew older, I began to learn that the government can better people's lives, serve communities, and create lasting social change.
During high school, I took a government and politics class that would forever change the way I viewed government and the people within it. I liked the checks and balances in the U.S. government and how the President wasn't a King. I also admired the legislative branch because they've passed laws that have helped my community, such as Medicaid. I realized that I wanted to be part of that positive social change. So, I attended community college and did everything in my power to transfer to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I studied political science and completed the honors program at my school. I also served as a poll worker in the 2024 primary election and contributed to my school's student governing body as the Senator of Political Affairs. During my time in community college, I became increasingly interested in the U.S. government and how it impacts social welfare. I also became obsessed with how the Constitution can protect individual liberty and how laws today can still disproportionately impact groups of people. This fueled my passion in helping marginalized, low-income communities because I learned that progress has been made before, but that there is still so much more to be done.
So far, I've completed my first career goal: transferring to UCLA as a Public Affairs major. After completing my Bachelor's, I wish to pursue my Master's at UCLA in Public Policy. My long-term goal, however, is to work in government to help low-income and marginalized communities. I aspire to work with Congress members and Senators and become their apprentice. I want to run for office in the city I grew up in: the city of San Fernando. From there, I want to run for state and federal government positions to represent California. My biggest goal is to work in Congress in the House of Representatives because I want to be part of the lawmaking process that impacts low-income families throughout the nation. I wish for healthcare to be affordable, for housing to be more accessible, and for higher education to be viable for low-income students. All in all, I wish to contribute to social change in the United States by working in Congress.
This scholarship would help me fund my education and ultimately contribute to my goals. It would help me pay for books at UCLA regarding public policy and political science. These books are the framework for any good public service agent because they will teach me to become knowledgeable about my community's needs and how to respond to those needs. I crave to learn more about the U.S. government and how I can be part of the system to become an agent of change. This scholarship would help me with that.
