Ms. Susy’s Disney Character Scholarship
Growing up, there were not many children movies that idolized the independent women character. As a young lady we were mostly given princesses that were destined to be married and they sat in a tower waiting to be rescued. Movies like those needed a new plot twist. When _Brave_ came out I found myself in awe of a girl. One that defied her parents, was adventurous and rebellious, and she was independent and strong. Merida quickly became my favorite character. I understood her on a personal level; she butted heads with her mother (which was more than relevant to my life), along with not wanting to conform to the role of "damsel in distress." I loved this movie and love it even more now after understanding what the movie meant. I think the second runner up on my favorites list that came out after would be _Moana_. This movie had the same concept as _Brave_ and I loved the animation and the color pallet they chose for each one of these movies. Disney made movies that have underlying concepts and teachings that are so good for the growing mind. Even though I haven't watched many recent Disney Movies, I hear and see that these underlying concepts are still relevant. As time went on, more women characters were stared as leading roles. This created more love toward the Disney movies. Some other Disney characters I love for a similar reason would be Mulan and Tiana, sadly I wasn't introduced until later on. These movies have so much impact on small brains and teaching little girls that being independent and strong is one of the best lessons to put out in the world. Watching these characters growing up shaped the woman I am today. I hope to share these movies and many others with my children later down the line.
