Challenges that I have overcome related to my type 1 diabetes include conquering late night blood sugar lows, trying to make sure that I don't spike my blood sugar so that I can drive, keeping up with groups when my blood sugar is low, and advocating for myself. Late night blood sugar lows often kept me up at night and I had to be able to get up and function in the morning for school. While this only happens occasionally now, I had to learn how to function when I was tired and have a good attitude. Another challenge that I had to work through and still have to continue to be vigilant about is making sure that I don't spike or drop my blood sugar so that I can drive and make it to my appointments on time. I try not to eat before I have to drive and make sure that if I do, I won't go to high or low by giving myself the correct amount of insulin. This has taught me the value of time management and helped me better manage my diabetes. A third challenge that I have overcome related to my type one diabetes is keeping up with others when my blood sugar is low. I often want to ignore my limit and continue to push on, but I have learned that I need to put my personal health first and bring my blood sugar up before continuing on. A final challenge that I have overcome related to my type one diabetes is learning to advocate for myself. When I was first diagnosed, I didn't want to talk to others about my diabetes, and I only wanted to talk to people I trusted and knew wouldn't make fun of me. I quickly had to come to terms with reality and stand up for myself and needs so that people had correct information and didn't continue to try and set boundaries for me that weren't necessary. I would also describe myself as fierce and kind. I stand up for others and help mediate conflicts. I continue to face conflict head on and will not back down until the truth has been found. I go about this in a kind way though and practice good communication so that both parties see the other person's point of view and the end result is peaceful. I will also look for people in the hallway who are down and say hi, smile, or give them a compliment to try and make their day better. I will also hold the door for others and offer a helping hand if I see a need. I try to continually serve others and brighten the world around me. In conclusion, I have overcome several challenges due to being diagnosed with type one diabetes and yet I try to help others and make the world around me a better place. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application!
