Being a first-generation student means a lot to me because I know how much my family has gone through to get me to this point. Coming from a single mom and being the eldest, I have had so many different experiences, both good and bad, growing up. I watched my mom do the impossible and struggle financially while still making sure me and my sisters had everything we needed. Financially, my background is definitely a big part of who I am and what I want to do with my future. When I was younger, my sisters and I were part of a lot of programs. We would receive snack bags, food, and even gifts during the holidays. We were also able to go to sleepaway camp multiple times during the summer because of some of the programs we were involved in. After my dad passed, my mom faced a lot of financial hardship. That was when I realized I had to be more and do more with myself. I have seen what not having enough can do firsthand, and even though it may be sad, I am determined not to leave my future that way. I want to be able to help my family and eventually give my mom the same feeling of security that she always tried to give me. A lot of my childhood experiences came from local social workers and the programs they connected my family to. I remember seeing program leaders give families food, gifts, and resources when they needed them. I also started therapy, and the work we did during those sessions made me even more interested in helping people. Seeing how social workers and other people in these programs could make a difficult situation a little easier really stayed with me. I want to be that person for someone else and be there for them and their family when they need someone. My experiences also made me interested in people’s behavior and why they do the things they do. I have always questioned what makes people think and act the way they do—not in a bad way, but because I genuinely want to understand them. That is why I have always liked psychology and sociology. I would love to study social psychology because it combines so many of the things I am interested in, but right now I am pursuing Social Work, which is something I genuinely see myself doing for the rest of my life. Growing up in a single-parent, low-income household taught me responsibility at a young age. After my dad left, I watched my mom struggle with depression, and there were days when she couldn’t get out of bed. During those times, I stepped into a role that most kids my age didn’t have. I helped get my younger sisters ready for school, took them to the bus, got them off the bus in the afternoon, made dinner, and did whatever I could to help keep things together. Those experiences shaped who I am. Even now, it’s still hard for me to step out of that “mom” mindset because taking care of others became second nature. My friends even joke that I’m the “mom of the group” because I’m always checking in on everyone, giving advice, and reminding people to take care of themselves. I genuinely enjoy helping people, and I think that’s one of the biggest reasons I want to become a clinical social worker. Although my family’s financial situation has made paying for college challenging, I haven’t let it stop me. I’ve worked, applied for scholarships, completed my financial aid requirements, and stayed committed to earning my degree in Social Work. Every step I take is bringing me closer to my goal. I want to use my life experiences to make a positive impact by supporting children and families who are facing challenges like the ones I experienced growing up. I know what it feels like to carry responsibilities at a young age, and I want to be someone who helps others find hope, support, and resources. My dream is to become a clinical social worker because I want to help children and families who are going through difficult situations like the ones I’ve experienced. I know how much having someone who truly cares can make a difference, and I want to be that person for others. I’ve also worked while getting ready for college and spent a lot of time applying for scholarships and completing financial aid requirements. Paying for college has been one of my biggest worries, but instead of giving up, I’ve done everything I can to make my education possible. I’m always looking for opportunities that can help me stay on track and reach my goals. Receiving this grant would take away some of the financial stress that comes with starting college. It would help pay for things like tuition, books, housing, and other school expenses, allowing me to focus more on my classes and less on how I’m going to afford everything. I believe students from disadvantaged backgrounds deserve scholarships because our circumstances don’t define our potential. Many of us have to work harder just to reach the same opportunities as everyone else. When someone believes in us and invests in our education, it gives us the chance to build a better future—not just for ourselves, but for the people we hope to help someday.
