My name is Ene Ochonu, and I am a high school graduate and current third-year at the University of Chicago. I am majoring in neuroscience, and plan to minor art history. Advocacy and volunteering are things that I am passionate about, and they drive me to improve my community, along with helping others around me. I currently serve as secretary on the African and Caribbean Students Association, a Co-Editor for PULSE magazine, and in the summer I conduct cancer research through the Vanderbilt/TSU/Meharry Cancer Research Program.
Throughout high school I participated in extracurriculars such as the Mayor's Youth Council, the Spanish Honors Society, where I was secretary. Through these opportunities I learned valuable skills and became knowledgeable about different problems, professions, and cultures.
Scholarships will allow me to pursue an undergraduate degree without debt, and I plan on using my undergraduate degree to help marginalized and low income communities. I plan on becoming a physician. My main fields of interest within medicine are mental health/psychiatry, gynecological cancers, and health disparities/public health. Wherever I end up, I want to continue to be involved in my community and aid others.
