    Bold Success Scholarship
In the next year, I plan to finish my advanced placement tests with good scores, communicate with my college counselor, and converse with people who are already successful in the medical field. As I want to pursue a career as a doctor, these are very important steps to lead me to medical school. My advanced placement tests will allow me to have college credits before my freshman year, thus limiting the amount of courses I have to take during my undergraduate period. This will allow me to make a faster transition into medical school, so that I can become a doctor as fast as I can. This would also allow me to attend medical school sooner, which is something I am really looking forward to. Secondly, I am going to have multiple important conversations with my college counselor. He will walk me through my undergraduate period, and highlight the courses I need to take to prepare me for medical school. Furthermore, he will help me achieve the maximum success I can at Seton Hall University, as there is much competition to get into the Seton Hall Medical School. My college counselor will outline what resources I need to be successful in my rigorous undergraduate schedule. With his help, I believe I will have an amazing opportunity to attend a prestigious and competitive medical school. Finally, I want to ask questions to people who share the same love for the medical field as I do. They will be able to give me tips on studying for tests in both my undergraduate and medical school periods. I can learn from mistakes or experiences others may have had in their schooling, and make sure I do not have the same problems.

A while back, I attended a virtual memorial service. A student from my high school had passed away. He was a student of my piano teacher, and I saw her in tears during the service. Everyone was in shock, devastated by his death. His parents spoke at the service, his mother was holding back tears, desperately trying to get through the speech. The service took place on what would have been his nineteenth birthday. The entire event was mournful, everybody seemed so down. They had a live performance by my piano teacher, and she played such a somber piece of music. The atmosphere of the service has been ingrained in my memory. This memory has inspired me to pursue a career in helping others. If I could help save at least one kid, that would be one less mother crying in despair. One less sorrowful service where everyone is in awe. Kids have a family and a community who love them and care for them and their well being. If I am able to help a kid who was on the verge of death, I would feel like I am saving so many people from overwhelming grief. I could look back at that day and say to myself that I made a difference. I stopped another memorial service like the one I attended from happening again. I stopped someone else’s mom from having to get through a speech without crying. This memory of sorrow and despair has made me want to make a change by helping others.
    Bold Motivation Scholarship
I am currently enrolled in the joint medical degree program at Seton Hall University. This eight-year program will allow me to to work as a doctor in pediatric internal medicine one day. The medical field is unique in that you have a direct impact on the mood and well being of every single patient that you have. I believe that having a positive attitude and a smile on my face every day can greatly improve the mood and comfort level of any patient I may have in the future. I have the ability to make the experience of recovering a pleasant one. Being a doctor is about community, and improving the lives of the people around you. I can help uplift the community around me by providing good care and making the patient feel happy about the recovery process they are going through. The world will become a better place if I uplift my community, even if it is a small place. Improving the lives of so many people and the families that they have makes a huge difference.

As a person who wants to help others, the main objective is to improve the lives of the community you’re in. As a captain of the Lower Moreland Chess Team, I have some experiences of helping the people in my community. For example, during my junior year, an incoming freshman, Nihal, was struggling to improve at chess. He was so passionate about the game, and I could see his frustration building day by day. At the beginning of the season, he was not able to make the varsity chess team. However, I recognized his commitment to the game. I promised him that I would work with him on weekends, where we could play chess online together. We spent countless hours every weekend going over openings, coordinating pieces, and time management in chess. After our ten week season, there was a two week break before the playoffs started. The chess team always used this time to have challenge matches, to determine our varsity roster heading into playoffs. Nihal beat every single JV player, as well as the last member on the varsity team. Nihal made varsity. The look on his face after making the varsity roster is something I will never forget. This experience has made me want to help others in my community even more than I already had.

    Pandemic's Box Scholarship
During the pandemic, I have had more time for myself than ever. I have been forced to spend more time enjoying hobbies that I can have from my own house. I enjoy playing chess, as well as playing the piano. I have spent even more time than I had before enjoying these, and I have learned new things about them. In addition, I have picked up new hobbies and interests that I never thought I would have had. I have been playing different kinds of board games online, such as Stratego and Catan. I have nearly doubled the time I spend practicing piano and reading chess books during quarantine. The experience has given me an inside look as to what a professional’s schedule looks like on a daily basis. After a long time spent on the same hobby, it can become difficult to maintain concentration, especially on a daily basis. This has been a challenge for me the last few months, and it is an obstacle I am looking to overcome. I have heard many professionals in both music and chess talk about this same concept in interviews and talk shows. They mention how they practice for up to twelve hours a day before a competition or tournament. A lot of the time, they mention how this rigid schedule is mentally exhausting and difficult to keep up with, as it is very easy to lose focus. I have been learning to climb this hurdle during the pandemic, and hopefully improving my concentration can help me take the next step up in my practice. In addition to my preexisting hobbies, I have picked up playing some online board games. It has helped me past the time spent sitting in the house, but I have also improved upon my ability to recognize patterns and adapt to game scenarios, which is very important to an avid chess player. Learning new games has expanded my imagination and creativity as well. Improvising new strategies and implementing them into a game is not an easy accomplishment, but I have tried my best to do so while playing. I have had to adapt to the imposing playstyles of other more experienced players that I am matched up against. If I do not learn to create ideas and opportunities of my own within the game, I will not be able to keep up. This has helped me in my chess and piano playing as well. I have been able to learn new ideas and strategies much quicker, and have even been able to implement them in my practicing. The creativeness and adaptability I have learned from online board games has also helped in the virtual classroom this year. I found myself able to learn topics much quicker, and be able to complete assignments faster and with more accuracy than before. My improvement in concentration and focus has afforded me the ability to pay attention in online school for much longer periods of time than I ever thought possible. This is especially important during online school because being on a screen and being in the comfort of my own home can provide a lot of distractions.

Future Leaders in Technology Scholarship - High School Award
In the current year of online education, tech gadgets could not be more in demand. My school issued Chromebook to every single student. We have to use these to log into classes every single day. This is how the teachers are able to give us lessons. In addition, we use the chrome book for a feature called google classroom, an online resource where teachers can assign work to the students. We can ask the teacher questions here, and turn in the work that we complete. We have to use the camera on the chromebooks to take pictures of our work that we then submit. In addition to the Chromebooks, a phone is very important in the current school year. We have to use our phones to access the College Board. This is an online resource for AP classes that students take. The teachers can show us problems and videos to review for the AP test. In addition, they can give us tests on the College Board that have questions from past AP tests in our class. This allows us to get used to the type of format that our AP test questions are going to be in. Our teachers use our chromebooks to assign us interactive material even if we are virtual students. They use websites such as nearpod, which allows the teacher to make an interactive slideshow, and allows students to answer questions on the slideshow. This can help us stay engaged and learn while we are taking notes on the slideshow. Another very popular site is Edpuzzle, which assigns us videos to watch with interactive free response questions attached to them. We are made to show that we have an understanding of the video by answering the open ended questions. Finally, teachers can use breakout rooms in google meet to allow us to work with some of our peers on group work. The teacher can decide how many students go into any breakout room, so we can use this for projects or just classwork that we are struggling with. Finally, science classes have to use school issued chrome books to assign us virtual science labs. The hands on setup allows us to track our progress in a lab, and also teaches us what we are creating within the lab. The teacher can see our progress, and we can understand what we are making when we do the virtual labs. These are commonly done in groups, with the breakout groups that I mentioned before. In chemistry classes, the teacher has a large selection of specialized labs that are designed to cover the material that will be on an AP exam. Therefore, in addition to slideshow presentations, we can have a hands-on demonstration of our learning, even in a fully virtual environment. We have to use all of the same materials that would be present in a live lab, but instead of using the actual materials, we use the virtual materials instead. This even improves safety, as there is no longer a risk of dropping corrosive materials that are sometimes used in chemistry labs.g

A while ago, I attended a virtual memorial service. In addition, I volunteer at the Lower Moreland Chess Club for younger students who are trying to learn the game. I help the owners of the club set up, as well as teach the kids and help them improve in their own games. I do this because I want to improve the lives of people in my community by teaching them the amazing game of chess. I believe I will be able to apply these skills to a future career of helping others. I am committed to the chess community, just as I will be committed to the community in which I work. I have shown that I am able to enhance and expand the chess club for both high school and elementary kids, and the lessons I learned from meeting these people from the clubs will prepare me for excellence in helping others. I am attending Seton Hall University’s Joint MD Program. This program will allow me to attend their medical school after my undergraduate period. My educational goal is to graduate from the Seton Hall medical school, and score well on my MCAT test. This will equip me with the skills necessary to improve the lives of the people I am serving. The medical school at Seton Hall is known for hands-on learning, as well as adapting to the needs of the field and the students. This type of environment of learning as a group and cooperation is where I can thrive. I love working on real scenarios, and I love to engage in the work I am doing. The program will perfectly fit my need for engagement with the students, and will surely prepare me to help the community I work in in the future.

I started playing the piano when I was ten years old. If there was ever an example of love at first sight then this would have been it for me. My first teacher, Elga, was a singer and composer from Germany. Elga taught music as a part of life and appreciated every aspect that went into its making. I was hooked immediately and studied with Elga until early 2019. Elga suffered a stroke and was forced into an assisted living facility. The facility is nice and accommodated Elga greatly in her recovery. I started visiting Elga every weekend and comforted her as much as possible. The facility had a piano and I was able to play for Elga and some of the residents. Playing there became a weekly concert that was attended by up to twenty residents at a time. Most were elderly and in poor health but the music seemed to make them forget that for awhile. I think I enjoyed it as much as they did and possibly more. The residents shared their life stories with me and many were fascinating. When the pandemic struck I was no longer able to play or visit the facility. Elga has been estranged to me because she isn’t very good with a phone. It was during this time I realized how therapeutic music was to the residents and myself. How simply playing and then listening to these people made their life happier. Music is and will always be a part of my life and I hope to share it again with Elga.

I am a first generation college student from Lower Moreland Township Pennsylvania. I have been accepted into Seton Hall University’s Joint MD program where I will start in fall 2021.

I started playing the piano at eight years old. My father always pushed me into sports, so my mother balanced me with education and music. I connected with music almost immediately and have since written and composed my own pieces. I study at the Settlement Music School and have played in front of several audiences. Music is creative and ambitious. The drive and practice it takes to play affects everything else in my life. I have viewed music as part of my education and make practice part of routine study. It wasn’t until early 2019 when I realized just how powerful music could be to people. My first teacher, Elga, suffered a devastating life change that forced her into an assisted living facility. I visited her every weekend and brought her things to make her more comfortable. It wasn’t long until Elga found a piano in the facility and started encouraging me to play for the residents. I played every weekend to a packed house of eager elderly residents. They were so happy and gracious to me whenever I played for them. The staff often attended and allowed me to eat lunch with Elga after the performance. Elga made new friends during the performances. She would happily lay claim to being my teacher and explain to the other residents what pieces I played. In 2020, when the pandemic struck, things changed. I was no longer allowed to visit the facility and my contact with Elga was minimal. Elga wasn’t very good with phone calls and her hearing was getting worse. It’s been a year since I’ve been able to play for Elga and the other residents. I know just by the excitement they showed that they miss it too. The time away has made me realize the importance of music to not only young kids but to older people. It brings people together and regardless of backgrounds, gives them a chance share together. I will graduate high school this year and will be attending Seton Hall University in the fall. I have been accepted into the Joint MD program and, after my undergraduate time, will go on to medical school. It is my goal to work in pediatric internal medicine. I want to give back to my community by helping our most vulnerable members. I also would like to share my music with the children as part of their stay in the hospital. I hope they can experience the same happiness that Elga did and forget why they are there for awhile.

My favorite movie of all time is, oddly enough, Hotel Transylvania. Besides it being a fun animated family film, it was shows why family can be made up of all types of monsters, or people. The movie is very light-hearted and filled with childish humor, but what could one expect when Adam Sandler provides the lead voice. I think what attracts me most to the film is how accepting the main characters are to those who are different from them. I was born into a blended family and understood at an early age that family are the people who love you. Johnny, who is the human, in the film is adopted into the monster world based on his good nature and personality. He quickly falls in love with Dracula’s daughter and then they are family. Even though Dracula denies he ever says ‘blah, ba-blah,’ we all know he does and that’s what makes this my favorite movie.

During my Junior year of high school, I decided to attend the Lower Moreland Chess Club. They had an advertisement out that asked for people to help them manage the club, so I decided to help. The club meets were held on Tuesday nights at 630, in a small room above the local library. When I arrived, I was quickly greeted by the people who ran the club. An older couple, seemingly overwhelmed trying to manage teaching forty kids all by themselves. They were very enthusiastic, and genuinely delighted to see someone show up to help. At first, they asked me to help set up tables, chess boards, and very mundane tasks. It appeared to be an average chess club, kids sitting down to play their friends, talking to one another. Clearly filled with excitement, they started sharing all the wonderful events and activities they had for the kids. They started listing off dozens of tournaments they took the kids to every year. There were high level players they had come to the club to lecture every year. They even held in house tournaments for all of the kids in the club, and they managed the entire thing by themselves. I was in awe after hearing this. I thought to myself, they create so many incredible opportunities for these kids, all by themselves. I couldn’t believe it. The Lakatas did not receive any money to host the chess club, nor did they receive any kind of reward for creating all of these special events for the kids. They simply did this out of the kindness of their hearts. I recognized what it meant to lead a community. These kids were so happy to be in that small room above the library because of the work they did. They created this community, and that has truly inspired me. In the fall, I am attending Seton Hall’s Joint MD Program. This program will allow me to attend their medical school after my undergraduate period. My educational goal is to graduate from the Seton Hall medical school, and score well on my MCAT test. This will equip me with the skills necessary to improve the lives of the people I am serving. The program will perfectly fit my need for engagement with the students, and will surely prepare me to help the community I work in in the future. I plan to return to the chess club during my breaks from school. The feeling of inspiration the club offers is intoxicating. I am looking forward to many more years of service with younger chess players.

Just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, I began volunteering at a rehabilitation home for elderly residents. I started by performing classical music pieces on the piano for the residents. Every Saturday at the center, I would greet the residents in the dining hall. The residents would eat and I would play for them. The experience was rewarding for me and hopefully enjoyed by those attending. I have included a photo of me and Elga, who is a resident at the facility. Forming friendships with those who don’t have families is as bold a moment one can ever have in life.

My name is Emmit Fitzgerald, and I attend Lower Moreland High School as a senior this year. I am the captain of the Lower Moreland chess team and the Lower Moreland Math Team. While academics has always been my main focus, I still compete in both cross-country and tennis at my high school. In addition to my school teams, I also participate in basketball and baseball for my counties in house league teams. During the off seasons, I enjoy running and often use free weights to workout. I believe that focusing on health and staying active in sports keeps me very balanced. The attention and drive it takes to play sports has definitely carried over into my academic life.

I would also like to ask them about some amazing or life changing time they had in their job. I am very passionate about helping other people, and just hearing stories of what others have done to save a life brings me joy. The medical field is about bringing people together, and helping patients in every way possible. The ability to make a difference in a person’s life has inspired me to choose this path. Therefore, incredible stories from people already in the field are very important to me. In an interview with Dr. Ted Schuck, a family friend, I had asked him multiple questions about his eventful journey to becoming a doctor. The first question I had asked him is what inspired him to join the medical field. He said as a kid, he had a friend who became deeply sick. He described how his friend looked like all of the energy was taken out of him, and how he was in pain constantly. However, his friend went to the hospital and weeks later, made a full recovery. He then saw that same kid sitting at his desk in school, taking notes just as he had a month earlier. He was no longer deeply in pain, and suffering as he had just weeks ago, and this was because of the incredible power of modern medicine. This inspired him to join the medical field. He was so intrigued by the amount of good he could do by becoming a doctor, and he felt like he had no choice but to go to medical school. I had then asked him what advice he would give to someone who is just joining the medical field. He said to simply be open and ready every single day. There is no way to tell who is going to come in the door, nor what is happening to them. He said that just having a smile on your face and being ready for anything makes the job much easier and more enjoyable. He talked about being positive and happy when dealing with a patient, as it can have such a positive impact on their mood and comfort level, which is essential to medical care. The third question I asked was what the biggest hurdle in the path to becoming a doctor was. He answered by saying that medical school has a very large workload. He talked about some of the classes he had in medical school, and the extreme amount of essays can be overwhelming. However, he added that focusing on the bigger picture is very helpful. Although the journey can be very difficult, being on the path to a dream job where you can change a person’s life is very exciting. This can make the path seem like it has a great purpose, and make the workload seem not so heavy. It will also remove the feeling of being overwhelmed, and it helped to calm him down. Finally, I asked him what he did outside of the classroom that improves his career today. He said that he took every opportunity he could to shadow other doctors during their workday. Seeing how other doctors dealt with patients, and seeing what a full day of work entails gave him a perspective on the job. He had an idea of what being a doctor looked like before his first day of work. He claimed that this allowed him to be a successful doctor quickly, and without shadowing other doctors it would have taken him much longer to adjust to a full day of work as a doctor. It’s my goal to graduate medical school and work in pediatric internal medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. I want to give back to my community by providing care to our most vulnerable and valuable members.

My love for the game of chess has grown since being introduced. I now belong to two chess clubs, Chattarunga and North Penn, outside of school. I have been able to play in numerous tournaments and weekly matches. I am in my senior year now and have been honored by being selected captain of my school chess team. My current USCF rating is 1830. I have also been accepted into Seton Hall Universities BS/MD program. My goal is to graduate medical school there and then work in pediatric internal medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. I want to give back to the most vulnerable and valuable members of my community. I also want to continue playing and tutoring chess throughout my journey.

He told me how the course had forced him to think critically and outside the box. He applies that same skill every single day when he goes to work. He said how everyday and every patient is truly different in what exactly they need. It is necessary for him to think critically if he wants to give them the very best treatment possible, which is the end goal. This not only applies to the treatment, but to the way of interacting with the patient. He added that just giving time to treating every patient as a unique individual makes him much better at what he does. It’s my goal to apply everything I learn and work in pediatric internal medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Giving back to the most vulnerable and valuable in my community.

My goal after I graduate is to serve any patients and their families to the best of my ability every day. Furthermore, I would want to change the lives of the people I come across for the better. I wish to work as a doctor and be able to meet and help patients every day. I plan to do this with the education I receive from Seton Hall University. I am attending the Joint MD program, which allows me to go directly to their medical school after my Undergraduate period. Seton Hall has a prestigious medical school known for its hands on learning and preparing students for futures in the medical field. This school will prepare me with all the information I need to succeed in helping future patients and their families. In addition, I want to help the community that I work in. One of the main benefits of working in the medical field is the ability to directly impact the community around you in an extremely positive way. Helping families and supporting those that need help is an amazing way to improve a community. Attending Seton Hall’s medical school can help me do this. I will receive the education to make an immediate transition to a position as a doctor, and impact my community immediately.

I am in my senior year and taking AP statistics. The challenge of taking an advanced course virtually has been difficult. I have always enjoyed having in person learning with the hands on ability of the teacher in a classroom. I have utilized a tutor when I was in 5th grade taking honors geometry. I believe having a tutor can only enhance the limited attention I am receiving in a virtual classroom and help improve my understanding of the material.
