As a senior in high school, I am in the midst of an exciting yet challenging time in my life. The excitement comes from the prospect of starting a new chapter of my life as a college student, while the challenge lies in navigating the obstacles that come with being an immigrant student. My family and I moved to the United States from Venezuela when I was in the seventh grade. One of the biggest obstacles I faced upon arriving in the US was the language barrier. As a native Spanish speaker, I struggled to understand my teachers and classmates in my new school. I was shy and afraid to speak, which made it even harder to learn English. However, I was determined to overcome this challenge, and with the help of supportive teachers and friends, I gradually gained the confidence to speak English and communicate effectively. My journey as an immigrant student has been marked by numerous challenges, including the high cost of tuition and the lack of connections in academia. However, I have learned to be resourceful and seek out opportunities that can help me achieve my goals. For instance, I have taken advantage of community college courses that allow me to earn college credits at a lower cost. I have also participated in STEM programs for underrepresented students, which have helped me build a network of mentors and peers who share my interests. One of the things I have learned since coming to the US is the value of hard work and perseverance. Growing up in Venezuela, I saw firsthand how difficult it can be to achieve success in a country with limited opportunities. However, I have also seen how determination and a strong work ethic can overcome even the toughest obstacles. In conclusion, I am grateful for the opportunities that the US has afforded me and my family. I am proud to be an immigrant student, and I am determined to make the most of the opportunities that come my way. With hard work, perseverance, and the support of generous donors like you, I am confident that I can achieve my dreams of pursuing a career in engineering and making a positive impact on the world. As someone who has always been passionate about sustainability and the environment, I have often thought about ways to reduce my personal carbon footprint and help others do the same. One particular issue that has always stood out to me is the amount of single-use plastic that is used and thrown away each day. Despite the availability of alternatives and the growing awareness of the negative impact that plastic waste has on the environment, it is still a widespread problem. This inspired me to create a solution to this problem and I began to think about how I could make it a reality. The solution that I came up with is a mobile application called “EcoSwap”. The concept of the app is simple: it allows users to exchange items they no longer need, such as clothing, books, or household items, with others in their local community. This way, the items are kept in use instead of being thrown away, reducing the amount of waste that is generated. Additionally, the app would promote the use of reusable items, such as water bottles or tote bags, by offering incentives to users who use them instead of single-use alternatives. To make this app a reality, I would need to secure funding to hire a team of developers and designers. The app would need to be user-friendly, visually appealing, and accessible to a wide range of people. Marketing efforts would also be needed to raise awareness of the app and encourage people to use it. In terms of revenue, EcoSwap would generate income through the sale of advertising space within the app. Companies and brands that align with the values of sustainability and environmental consciousness would be targeted for advertising partnerships. Additionally, the app could charge a small transaction fee for each exchange made through the platform. To ensure the safety and security of its users, EcoSwap would have several measures in place. Users would need to create an account and verify their identity, and any reported incidents of misconduct or inappropriate behavior would result in a suspension or ban from the platform. The app would also provide a rating system for users, allowing others to see the ratings of those they are considering exchanging items with. Overall, I believe that EcoSwap has the potential to make a significant impact on reducing waste and promoting sustainability. With the right funding and resources, it could be developed into a widely used platform that benefits both individuals and the environment. I am passionate about this idea and would love the opportunity to make it a reality

Growing up in a low-income household has shaped who I am in many ways, both positive and negative. On the one hand, it has taught me the value of hard work, determination, and resourcefulness. On the other hand, it has also exposed me to many challenges that I would not have otherwise experienced. One of the biggest challenges that I faced was when my family moved to a new country where we did not speak the language and were not familiar with the culture. Everything was new and unfamiliar, and we had to navigate this new environment without any guidance or support. This was a particularly difficult time for me, as I was still a child and did not fully understand what was happening. One of the biggest challenges we faced was financial instability. My parents had difficulty finding work, and we often struggled to make ends meet. We had to rely on government assistance and the help of friends and family to get by. This experience taught me the importance of being frugal and resourceful, and how to make the most of what we had. In addition to financial challenges, there were also cultural and social challenges. I had to adapt to a new way of life, and learn to navigate a different culture and social norms. I had to learn a new language and make new friends, which was not always easy. However, this experience taught me the importance of being open-minded and adaptable, and how to find common ground with people from different backgrounds. Despite these challenges, I am grateful for my experiences growing up. They have shaped me into the person I am today and taught me important life lessons that I will carry with me forever. Looking to the future, my goals are to continue to work hard and strive for success, both for myself and for those around me. I hope to use my experiences to make a positive impact in my community and contribute to creating a more just and equitable society. One of my goals is to pursue higher education and eventually obtain a degree in a field that will allow me to make a difference in people's lives. I am interested in social work, as I have seen firsthand the impact that poverty and other social issues can have on individuals and communities. I want to use my education and skills to help others overcome these challenges and achieve their full potential. In conclusion, growing up in a low-income household and then moving to a new country where everything was unfamiliar has been a challenging but formative experience. It has taught me the importance of hard work, perseverance, and adaptability, and has given me a unique perspective on the world. While there have been many challenges along the way, I am grateful for these experiences and am determined to use them to make a positive impact in the world.
