Growing up in a low-income household taught me that resilience is not something you choose, it becomes a necessity. As an international student from Nigeria, my family has made countless sacrifices so could pursue opportunities that once seemed out of reach. There were times when financial uncertainty made it difficult to focus on anything except survival. Instead of allowing those obstacles to define me, I chose to let them strengthen my determination. Living with limited resources forced me to become resourceful. I learned to solve problems creatively, appreciate every opportunity, and work harder than I ever thought possible. Every scholarship, every academic achievement, and every leadership opportunity represents more than personal success, it reflects my family's sacrifices and my commitment to creating a better future.
Today, I am pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering because I want to use technology to solve real-world problems that affect underserved communities. Outside of coursework, I continuously challenge myself to learn new software, strengthen my problem-solving abilities, and develop projects that demonstrate innovation and creativity. I also look for opportunities to mentor and encourage others, especially students who may doubt whether they belong in STEM because of financial or personal challenges.

Growing up, I believed that success was mostly determined by talent. The more I read, however, the more I realized that the people I admired were rarely the smartest in the room. They were the ones who stayed disciplined, embraced failure, and continued learning long after everyone else had given up. Books have reshaped the way I think about success, leadership, and my future as an engineer. They have taught me that achievement is built through consistent effort, curiosity, and the willingness to solve problems that matter.
One book that profoundly influenced me was Atomic Habits by James Clear. Before reading it, I focused almost entirely on outcomes: earning good grades, landing internships, or completing ambitious projects. This clearly challenged that mindset by emphasizing the importance of systems over goals. His argument that small, consistent improvements compound over time completely changed how I approach both school and personal growth. Instead of waiting for motivation, I developed routines that made learning and improvement a daily habit. This philosophy has helped me become more disciplined in engineering, where success often depends on patience, repetition, and continuous refinement.
Another book that left a lasting impression on me was The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Covey's emphasis on personal responsibility and proactive decision making, taught me that leadership begins long before someone receives a title. As a mechanical engineering student, I have become fascinated by the intersection of artificial intelligence and engineering. Rather than viewing Al as just another software tool, I see it as a way to solve real-world problems through intelligent systems that combine data, hardware, and human-centered design. Over the past two years, I have intentionally explored Al through personal projects, engineering coursework, and independent learning, challenging myself to move beyond simply using Al models and toward understanding how they are built, integrated, and applied. One of the projects that sparked my interest was designing a Smart Crosswalk Safety System. My goal was to explore how computer vision could improve pedestrian safety by detecting people approaching a crosswalk and triggering visual warnings for drivers. While developing the concept, I learned about object detection, image processing, Raspberry Pi integration, and the importance of optimizing systems for real-time performance. This project strengthened both my engineering mindset and my curiosity about embedded Al. I have also explored Al by building software tools that automate everyday tasks. One example is an Al-powered study assistant that allows students to upload notes, ask questions in natural language, and generate quizzes and flashcards. Creating this project introduced me to API integration, backend development, prompt engineering, and designing intuitive user experiences. I enjoy the process of taking an idea from concept to implementation and continuously improving it through testing and iteration. Beyond my own projects, I have invested significant time in learning the fundamentals of machine learning through online courses and technical documentation. I have studied concepts such as supervised learning, regression, classification, clustering, feature engineering, and model evaluation while strengthening my programming skills in Python. When people imagine the future of robotics, they often picture humanoid machines replacing doctors, teachers, or even friends. I imagine something different. I imagine robots becoming invisible, not because they disappear, but because they become such a natural part of life that we stop noticing them. The real challenge will not be building smarter robots. It will be teaching them to understand the people they are designed to help.
In the year 2042, my grandmother lived alone in a small coastal town. At eighty six, she refused to leave the home where she had spent her entire life. Her memory was not what it used to be, and climbing stairs became more difficult every month. Instead of moving her into a nursing facility, our family welcomed a home assistant robot named Atlas.
Atlas was not human. It did not pretend to smile or tell jokes that sounded rehearsed. Instead, it quietly learned her routines. Every morning it reminded her to take medication, prepared breakfast exactly the way she liked it, and adjusted the home's temperature before she even noticed she was cold. When storms approached, Atlas secured the windows and contacted emergency services if flooding became a threat.
Everything seemed perfect until one rainy afternoon.
My grandmother sat silently staring at an old photograph. Atlas detected signs of sadness.
Following its programming, it attempted to cheer her up by playing upbeat music, increasing the room's lighting, and suggesting breathing exercises. None of it worked.
Finally, Atlas asked, "Would you like me to remove this photograph since it appears to cause emotional distress?"
My grandmother smiled sadly.
"No," she whispered. "It reminds me of my husband."
Atlas processed the sentence. Its cameras recognized tears, but tears had always been classified as negative emotional indicators. Yet my grandmother continued looking at the picture as if it were the most valuable object in the world.

In the following years, engineers stopped asking, "How can robots become more intelligent?" They began asking a more important question: "How can robots better understand humanity?"
As a future mechanical engineer with a taste for robotics, I believe this is where robotics is heading. Today's robots already perform surgeries with incredible precision, assemble vehicles faster than humans, inspect dangerous environments, and even assist during natural disasters. Their mechanical capabilities continue improving every year through better sensors, stronger materials, and advances in artificial intelligence.
However, the greatest opportunity is not replacing human workers. It is extending human ability.
Imagine robots helping firefighters navigate collapsing buildings before people enter. Imagine autonomous underwater robots repairing damaged pipelines after hurricanes. Imagine agricultural robots reducing food waste by identifying unhealthy crops one plant at a time. Even atmospheric water harvesting systems, a research concept that fascinates me, could use autonomous robots to maintain equipment in remote regions where clean drinking water is scarce.
Yet every opportunity introduces difficult questions.
Who becomes responsible when an autonomous robot makes a mistake? How do we prevent companies from collecting deeply personal information through household robots? If robots perform most physical labor, how do we prepare future generations for meaningful work? Engineering has never been only about building machines. It is also about accepting responsibility for the consequences of those machines.
Isaac Asimov imagined rules that would keep robots from harming people. While those famous laws inspired generations of engineers, reality is much more complicated. Human life is full of situations where there is no perfect answer. A rescue robot may have seconds to decide whom to save first. A medical robot may recommend treatments that conflict with a patient's wishes. These decisions require not only intelligence but ethics.
That is why the future of robotics depends as much on engineers as on programmers, psychologists, ethicists, and ordinary families who will live alongside these machines.
When I eventually design robotic systems, I hope they are remembered not because they were the fastest or most advanced, but because they solved real problems while respecting the people they served. Technology should never replace compassion. It should create more opportunities for it.
Perhaps the greatest achievement in robotics will not be building a machine that thinks exactly like a human. It will be building one that understands enough about humanity to know when logic should give way to kindness.
If that future arrives, robots will not simply change the world.
They will help us become better versions of ourselves.

I think one of the most important characteristics of a MOA is kindness.

Yes, my bias is Beomgyu. I like his sense of humor and how he can make people laugh, but I also admire how hardworking he is. He reminds me that it's okay to be yourself while still giving your best.

The first time I opened a CAD program, I realized engineering was more than equations on a page, it was a way to transform imagination into something real. Watching a simple sketch evolve into a design that could one day solve a problem fascinated me. Since then, I have approached every challenge with the mindset of an engineer: stay curious, embrace failure, and keep improving until the solution works.
That mindset became especially important when I left Nigeria to pursue a Mechanical Engineering degree in the United States. Becoming an international student meant leaving behind everything familiar and rebuilding my life in a completely different country. I had to adapt to a new academic system, navigate financial responsibilities, and learn to succeed without the support network I had always relied on. There were moments of uncertainty, but each obstacle strengthened my resilience. Instead of asking why something was difficult, I began asking, "How can I solve it?"

When I first read about Malgorzata "Maggie" Kwiecien, I immediately connected with her story because many of the challenges she faced reflect parts of my own journey. Like Maggie, I moved to the United States on my own to pursue education and create opportunities for a better future.
Leaving behind everything familiar, family, home, culture, and comfort. All of which required courage, resilience, and determination. As an international student from Rivers State, Nigeria, I understand how difficult it can be to navigate a completely different environment while trying to succeed academically and personally at the same time. One of the ways I relate to Maggie most is her bravery. Moving to another country alone is not easy, especially when you do not have a strong support system nearby.
There are moments of loneliness, uncertainty, and fear that many people do not see. When I first arrived in the United States, I had to adapt to a new culture, a new educational system, and a completely different lifestyle while balancing financial and emotional pressures. At times, the experience felt overwhelming, and questioned whether I was strong enough to continue. However, like Maggie, I refused to allow those challenges to stop me from pursuing my goals. I also admire Maggie's determination to continue learning and pushing herself beyond limits. My name is Emmanuella Nneoma Okpara, and international student, hailing from South-South, Nigeria. Growing up in Nigeria, I learned that many of the challenges people face every day are not simply problems, they are opportunities for innovation. That perspective inspired me to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering, where I hope to design technologies that improve lives through sustainable and intelligent engineering. I wish to establish an engineering company dedicated to developing practical solutions for challenges such as clean water access, energy-efficient transportation, and smart mechanical systems that make everyday life safer and more efficient.
I believe the best engineers learn by building, not just by studying. Throughout college, I have intentionally sought opportunities to strengthen my technical skills beyond the classroom. I have taught myself how to use CAD software to design mechanical systems, and I have built Arduino-based engineering projects that combine programming, electronics, sensors, and mechanical design. One of my recent projects involved designing and constructing an intelligent vehicle prototype with an active aerodynamic spoiler. When I chose to study Mechanical Engineering, I wasn't drawn to it because I liked equations or machines. I chose it because engineering gives me the ability to solve problems that matter. Every design begins with a question: How can this be made better? That mindset has shaped not only the way I approach school but also the kind of engineer I hope to become.
The area of design that interests me most is sustainable product design and intelligent mechanical systems. I want to create technologies that use fewer resources, waste less energy, and improve people's everyday lives. To me, sustainability is not simply about protecting the environment. It is about designing products that last longer, consume fewer resources, and remain accessible to the people who need them most.
That passion extends beyond the classroom. In the photos attached to this application, you can see one of the engineering projects I have been building using an Arduino microcontroller, ultrasonic sensors, a servo motor, and a small robotic vehicle. What began as a simple prototype quickly became an exercise in problem-solving. I spent hours testing wiring, rewriting code, redesigning mechanisms, and learning from failures before the system behaved the way I intended. That experience taught me that engineering is rarely about getting the answer right the first time. It is about continually improving a design until it performs reliably and efficiently.

Every prototype forces me to consider material choices, energy consumption, efficiency, and how a product could be improved before it is manufactured on a larger scale. Growing up in Nigeria, I learned early that life can change in an instant. After my family's home was robbed, my parents had to focus on rebuilding our stability and finding a safe place for us to live.
During that time, I moved in with my grandparents, who became my primary caregivers for much of my childhood. Looking back, I realize they did far more than raise me, they shaped the values that continue to guide every decision I make.
Some of my favorite memories are the simplest ones. In the evenings, my grandfather would roast corn for all of us, and we would sit together on the balcony while he told stories about perseverance, integrity, and the importance of making the most of every opportunity. He believed education was the greatest gift anyone could receive. To encourage us, he created friendly competitions among his grandchildren, rewarding us based on our academic performance. It was never about the money; it was about teaching us that discipline, consistency, and hard work should always be celebrated. My grandmother showed her love differently. Growing up, I always felt like I was "different" in ways that were hard to explain. As an international student from Rivers State, Nigeria, moving to a completely different environment forced me to confront parts of myself that I once saw as awkward or out of place. One thing that has always made me stand out is how deeply emotional and sensitive l am. In many environments, especially growing up, being emotional was often seen as weakness. I was the person who overthought situations, cared too deeply, and carried the weight of my responsibilities silently. For a long time, I tried to hide that part of myself because I thought strength meant pretending nothing affected me. When I moved away from home to pursue my education, that sensitivity became even more noticeable. I struggled with homesickness, loneliness, and the pressure of trying to succeed while adapting to a completely new culture. There were moments when I felt awkward because I spoke differently, carried different experiences, and often felt like I had to work twice as hard just to prove that I belonged.
