“A pilot who says he has never been frightened in an airplane is, I’m afraid, lying”. – Louise Thaden. This quote has really stuck with me in my pursuit of a career in aviation because I find myself often afraid. My name is Emmanuel Miller, and I am a Sophomore at Ohio University in Athens Ohio. Due to lack of instructors and the increase in enrollment for aviation at Ohio University I was unable to fly Freshman year but am starting towards my private pilot's license this upcoming semester. My ideal plan when out of college is to work as an instructor at a local airport to accumulate the rest of my hours needed, to get my first official career as a pilot. What first opened my eyes to an aviation career was the pilot shortage that occurred after the worst parts of the Covid 19 pandemic. Before this I had been obsessed with the thought of being able to fly planes in the sky, but it felt like a dream more than a goal. I had no family background in the field of aviation and had no clue of where to even start to pursue this dream. But seeing that there was a demand inspired me to take that leap of faith and I am happy I did. People have been nothing but supportive, Ohio University's aviation program has been very helpful, and I am looking forward to getting in the cockpit this fall to fly. My end goal for my career in aviation would be to fly as a commercial pilot for a well-known and respected airline, but I will probably start off flying private. I have been looking into a company called NetJets but as I'm sure you know; the field of aviation is very unpredictable, and I would be happy to get in wherever I can.
All my life I have been involved in my community wherever I go. In Highschool I was a member of Key club, NHS, Leadership club, and was picked as my school's ambassador representative for our county. Through all of these I was not only able to play a role in the growth and development of the community, but I was also able to learn a lot and grow as a person. While I have been on campus in Athens, I have joined a Youth campus Ministry called In Compass. We meet multiple times throughout the week for bible study and to do things around campus such as food drive, actively participate in community engagement of new church members. I also worked on campus in food prep for most of the school year.
I really appreciate being considered for this Scholarship. Anything helps going towards tuition because although aviation is a very expensive career to get into, I know it will be worth it in the end. Thank you!
