My name is Emma Robaina-Shortt, and I have always felt a deep responsibility to help others, especially when it comes to health and well-being. Growing up, I watched my younger brother face a chronic health condition that affected almost every aspect of his daily life. From a young age, I became actively involved in supporting him not just emotionally but practically, by researching his condition, experimenting with dietary strategies, and tracking results to improve his quality of life. Through this process, I learned firsthand how dedication, curiosity, and a willingness to think critically can make a real difference in someone’s life. These experiences sparked my passion for medicine and shaped my desire to pursue a career in healthcare. I plan to become a trauma surgeon. This field draws me because it combines scientific knowledge with immediate, hands-on impact. Trauma surgery requires focus, resilience, and the ability to make critical decisions in high-pressure situations. I am inspired by the opportunity to help people in their most vulnerable moments, giving them a chance at recovery when seconds truly matter. My experiences with my brother taught me the importance of attention to detail, patience, and advocating for others, skills that I know will carry into every step of my future medical career. Beyond my family, I have sought ways to expand my impact in the community. I have been actively involved with the We Love Foundation, an organization that supports families affected by crisis. In this role, I helped design and implement initiatives to provide nutrition and health resources, often using my understanding of science and health to educate families and ensure they had the tools to improve their well-being. This work reinforced for me that healthcare is not just about treating illness; it is about service, education, and empowering others to take control of their health. It also strengthened my belief that access to healthcare and health knowledge is a critical factor in shaping resilient, healthy communities. Academically, I have pursued coursework and research in biology, neuroscience, and nutrition to build a strong foundation for my future in medicine. I have learned to approach problems analytically, think creatively, and embrace challenges with determination. At the same time, my experiences outside the classroom have taught me empathy, leadership, and perseverance. I have seen how small actions, whether helping someone manage a health condition, organizing resources for families, or educating a peer, can ripple outward to create meaningful change. Ultimately, my goal is to combine technical expertise with compassion to make a difference in the lives of patients and communities. I want to save lives in the operating room, advocate for equitable access to care, and educate others about how science and health knowledge can improve quality of life. This scholarship would help me continue my education, gain the skills I need to succeed in medicine, and honor the legacy of individuals who dedicated their lives to caring for others. I am committed to using every opportunity to learn, serve, and give back, and I hope to inspire others through the work I do in healthcare.

Growing up on a boat in Puerto Rico, I developed a deep connection to the ocean, wildlife, and the environment around me. Experiencing firsthand the beauty of nature sparked my curiosity about how human activity affects ecosystems and inspired me to pursue a path where I can make a tangible difference. I am particularly interested in environmental sustainability and wildlife conservation because I want to protect the natural spaces that shape our communities and well-being. My experiences helping families through the We Love Foundation taught me the importance of stewardship, responsibility, and using knowledge to create positive change. I hope to combine my education in environmental science with community outreach and advocacy to promote conservation practices, protect vulnerable ecosystems, and educate others about the critical link between human health, nutrition, and the environment. Through my work, I aim to ensure that future generations can experience and benefit from the natural world as I have.

I have always felt a deep responsibility to help others, especially when it comes to health and well-being. Growing up, my brother faced a chronic health condition that affected almost every aspect of his daily life. Watching him struggle sparked a determination in me to do everything I could to improve his quality of life. I immersed myself in learning about biology, nutrition, and health science, researching and experimenting with dietary interventions that could ease his symptoms. I tracked results, adjusted approaches, and advocated for solutions that were both evidence-based and practical. Seeing the positive impact of these efforts taught me that STEM is not just about theory or experiments in a lab; it is about applying knowledge to solve real problems and transform lives. The small victories we achieved together fueled my passion for medicine and strengthened my desire to dedicate my life to helping others. Beyond my family, I have carried this commitment into my community. Through my involvement with the We Love Foundation, I have helped design and implement initiatives that support families affected by crisis. STEM has been central to this work. From understanding the nutritional needs of children and families to helping organize food distribution efficiently, and educating community members on health practices that prevent illness, I have seen firsthand how scientific knowledge can empower entire communities. My experiences have shown me that when STEM is applied thoughtfully, it is a tool not just for understanding the world, but for creating opportunities, improving well-being, and lifting people up. I have also engaged in academic research and volunteer opportunities that connect STEM directly to community impact. By participating in studies on health and nutrition and sharing my findings with peers and local families, I aim to make complex scientific knowledge accessible and actionable. I believe that science is strongest when it is used to serve others, and I take pride in using my skills to improve lives, inspire curiosity, and encourage healthier habits. Through all of these experiences, I have learned that STEM is not only about knowledge; it is about responsibility, empathy, and service. By combining my passion for science with my commitment to helping others, I strive to pull people forward, just as Aura Matilde inspired, and to use STEM to create meaningful, lasting impact in my community. I am determined to continue applying my education, my curiosity, and my heart to make a difference, ensuring that the power of science reaches those who need it most.
    Fire and EMS Academy Scholarship
Receiving this scholarship would allow me to take the next crucial steps toward a career dedicated to saving lives and serving my community in high-stakes environments. From a young age, I have been inspired by the power of immediate action to change outcomes. Growing up, I watched my brother face serious health challenges, and I witnessed how timely interventions, combined with careful attention to nutrition and daily care, could transform his quality of life. That experience taught me that every second matters, and that preparation, skill, and empathy can make the difference between despair and hope. It also showed me the importance of understanding the human body, thinking critically in stressful situations, and never giving up when the odds seem impossible. My ultimate goal is to become a trauma surgeon, and I see experience in fire and EMS work as an essential foundation for that path. I want to learn how to respond under pressure, make critical decisions quickly, and provide care in moments where every action counts. I am passionate about understanding how pre-hospital care, rapid intervention, and emergency teamwork can directly affect outcomes for patients, and I want to bring that perspective into my future medical practice. This scholarship would give me the opportunity to dedicate myself fully to learning, training, and fieldwork without distraction. It would allow me to develop the technical skills necessary for emergency response, including patient assessment, first aid, and lifesaving interventions, while also strengthening the resilience, discipline, and leadership required in high-pressure situations. Beyond the skills, it would give me the chance to serve my community in a tangible way, supporting people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. I also see fire and EMS work as an opportunity to practice empathy and service every day. Being on the front lines, witnessing the challenges families face, and helping them in moments of crisis will deepen my understanding of human resilience, just as my experiences with my brother taught me the importance of care, patience, and advocacy. In the long term, I hope to combine my medical education with this frontline experience to create a lasting impact. Whether through trauma surgery, community outreach, or public health initiatives, I want to improve access to care, educate others about prevention and preparedness, and ensure that people in my community can face emergencies with support and hope. This scholarship will give me the tools, experience, and confidence to transform that vision into reality, and allow me to dedicate myself fully to a life of service, learning, and saving lives.

Growing up, I learned early that health is not something to take for granted. My brother’s struggle with a chronic condition shaped my childhood in ways I am only beginning to fully understand. I watched him navigate daily discomfort, uncertainty, and limitations that most people never see. But I also saw something else, the power of persistence, and the impact that small changes, especially in nutrition, could have on his life. I refused to feel helpless. Instead, I spent years researching, asking questions, and experimenting with ways to improve his condition through diet and lifestyle. Seeing even the smallest improvement felt like a victory. It showed me that healing is not always immediate or obvious, but it is always worth fighting for. That experience changed me. It is the reason I am determined to become a trauma surgeon. I want to be the person who steps in during the most critical moments, when seconds matter and lives hang in the balance. I am drawn to the intensity, the responsibility, and the ability to give someone a second chance when everything feels uncertain. For me, medicine is not just about science, it is about showing up for people when they need it most. My passion extends beyond my own family. Through my work with organizations supporting families in crisis, I have seen how deeply access to nutrition, healthcare, and education can impact an entire community. I have met people who are not lacking strength or determination, but opportunity. These experiences have stayed with me and continue to push me to think beyond individual care and toward broader change. I am also passionate about athletics and physical education because I have experienced how movement, discipline, and teamwork can shape both physical and mental well being. I believe these are not just activities, but tools that can empower people, especially young individuals, to build confidence, resilience, and healthier lives. Looking forward, I want to bring all of these passions together. I plan to pursue a career in trauma surgery while also advocating for better access to nutrition education and preventative care in underserved communities. I want to create programs that make health knowledge accessible and encourage active, balanced lifestyles. My goal is not only to treat patients in moments of crisis, but to help prevent those crises whenever possible. Everything I have experienced has taught me one thing: that even in the face of uncertainty, there is always something you can do to help. I carry that belief with me in everything I pursue, and I am committed to using it to make a lasting impact on the lives of others.
