I came out as a lesbian in my junior year of high school, but that was not when I accepted myself as part of the LGBTQ+ community; that is just when I felt safe enough to express it to my family. Over this past year at Virginia Commonwealth University, I have been more accepted in my community than ever before, but that does not mean I have forgotten any mistreatment or even the expected inequality for years to come in the straight, cis-male medical field that I have chosen to pursue.
My career goal is to become an anesthesiologist, and like any other medical career it is primarily dominated by straight, cis men. As a woman the fact that 77% of anesthesiologist's are men is intimidating, however, the probability that I will not be taken seriously not only for my sex but also for my sexuality is very scary.
I am currently working very hard on my Bachelors degree and I am receiving very good grades which I am very proud of. Because there is still inequality for the the selection of LGBTQ persons in the medical field, my goal is to make my transcript look so good that they cannot possibly look past it.
I would be amazing to already receive the same treatment and praise as a straight, cis-gender man, but until that day comes I intend to be part of the change.
