FinalistBio
Growing up, I was heavily involved in 4-H and Girl Scouts, where I not only learned valuable skills but also discovered my passion for helping others. I often found myself guiding younger members, offering advice and support when they faced challenges. This love for mentoring and service stayed with me throughout my life, leading me to become a volunteer firefighter and EMT.
As a firefighter, I’ve learned how to stay calm under pressure and how critical communication and teamwork are in times of crisis. Working as an EMT year-round, I’ve had the opportunity to provide life-saving care and offer support to those in need. These experiences have deepened my desire to help others and have shaped my decision to pursue a career in education.
I’m currently working toward an Associate’s degree in English and plan to transfer to a four-year college to study Secondary Education. My goal is to become an English teacher, helping students improve their communication skills and encouraging them to use language to make a positive impact. Through teaching, I want to empower students to embrace service, leadership, and community values, just as I’ve learned to do in my own life. Ultimately, I hope to inspire my students to use their voices for good.

During my time as an EMT, one instance where I demonstrated exceptional leadership occurred during a particularly intense medical emergency. We received a call about a multi-vehicle accident on a busy highway. There were multiple victims with varying levels of injuries, including one who was unconscious and not breathing. The scene was chaotic, with cars piled up, bystanders panicking, and the clock ticking.
As one of the more experienced EMTs on the scene, I quickly assessed the situation, taking charge of the triage process. My priority was to ensure that we focused on the most critical patients while managing the chaos around us. There were two others on my team, and while they were skilled, it was clear that their stress levels were high in the face of such an overwhelming situation. I knew that staying calm and clear-headed was crucial, both for the well-being of the victims and the success of our work.
I took immediate action by delegating responsibilities. I instructed one EMT to begin CPR on the unconscious patient while I handled the more stable but seriously injured victims. I also communicated directly with dispatch to ensure that we had additional resources on the way, including the fire department for potential extrication and more ambulances for the victims. As we worked to stabilize our patients, I kept a steady flow of communication with the team, offering encouragement and directing the efforts without micromanaging. I made sure everyone understood their role in the process, which allowed us to work more efficiently.
The challenges I faced included not only the obvious medical difficulties but also the emotional strain of seeing so many people in pain, some of whom were family members of the victims. My role as a leader at that moment went beyond medical expertise; I had to be a source of calm for both my team and the victims' families. I knew my leadership was essential to keep everyone focused and to prevent panic from affecting the quality of care we provided.
The impact of my leadership at that moment was evident when we successfully stabilized all patients and transported them to the hospital in critical but manageable conditions. The teamwork and organization I had fostered allowed us to handle the situation efficiently, preventing further harm to the victims. My actions that day were later acknowledged by my supervisor, who praised my ability to remain composed, make quick decisions, and maintain a strong sense of teamwork under pressure.
Looking forward, I plan to apply these leadership skills to my future career by continuing to refine my decision-making abilities and my capacity to stay calm in the most stressful situations. I also want to focus on mentoring younger or less experienced EMTs, helping them develop the confidence and skills they need to take charge when necessary. In my future career, I aim to not only be an effective EMT but also a leader who inspires others through both my actions and my ability to build a supportive, cohesive team. I hope to make a positive difference by leading with empathy, resilience, and a clear sense of purpose in every emergency.

Going to college is a transformative opportunity for me, one that represents both personal and professional growth. It’s a place where I can immerse myself in learning, challenge myself academically, and gain the necessary tools to pursue my career goal of becoming a high school English teacher. Beyond the classroom, college provides a platform for self-discovery, for making meaningful connections, and for stepping out of my comfort zone to grow as an individual. College is about more than just earning a degree—it's about preparing for the future and setting the stage for a fulfilling and impactful career.
As a student pursuing Secondary Education with a focus on English, I see college as the ideal place to gain in-depth knowledge and experience in my field. The courses I take will teach me not only the content I need to know but also the pedagogy and teaching strategies that will help me connect with and inspire my future students. I aim to teach high school students how to appreciate literature, express themselves clearly through writing, and think critically about the world around them. The practical experience I gain in the form of internships, classroom observations, and student-teaching will be invaluable in helping me understand how to effectively manage a classroom, meet students’ diverse needs, and create an inclusive learning environment.
What excites me about college is the balance it offers between gaining specialized knowledge in my field and fostering personal growth. College is not just a place for academics; it’s where I can build relationships with professors, peers, and mentors who will help me grow as both a person and a professional. Being surrounded by a diverse community of students will expose me to new ideas and perspectives, which will enhance my understanding of the world and ultimately make me a better teacher. The opportunity to get involved in campus activities, whether through volunteering, student organizations, or part-time work, will help me develop leadership, communication, and organizational skills that will be valuable in my career.
Moreover, college is an environment that pushes you to challenge yourself and step outside your comfort zone. Whether it’s speaking in front of a group, taking on difficult coursework, or tackling new experiences, the challenges I face in college will help build my resilience and confidence. This personal growth is just as important as the academic knowledge I’ll gain, as it will allow me to face future challenges head-on and adapt to change in the classroom.
My goal in attending college is not just to earn a degree, but to gain the skills, experiences, and perspective necessary to become an effective and compassionate teacher. I want to be someone who encourages students to think critically, helps them express themselves creatively, and inspires them to believe in their potential. College is providing me with the resources, support, and experiences to realize this dream and lay the foundation for a successful and fulfilling career in education.
In summary, going to college means setting the stage for my future career, but it’s also about the personal growth that happens along the way. It’s about learning, building relationships, and gaining the skills necessary to inspire others. College is an essential part of my journey, one that will shape me into the kind of educator I aspire to be. Through hard work, determination, and the support of my college community, I’m confident that I will accomplish my goals and make a positive impact in the lives of my future students.
Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship
As a female firefighter, EMT, and aspiring English teacher, I believe that my unique combination of roles will allow me to make a lasting positive impact on the world. Each of these professions, though vastly different, shares a core value: service to others. Through these careers, I am committed to making a difference in both immediate and long-term ways, empowering others, and fostering a sense of compassion and understanding in every community I serve.
In my role as a firefighter and EMT, I am already actively contributing to my community by responding to emergencies and providing life-saving care. Being a female in these male-dominated professions, I hope to break down gender barriers and serve as a role model for other women who aspire to pursue non-traditional careers. By excelling in this field, I demonstrate that women are equally capable of handling the physical, emotional, and mental demands of first responder work. This representation matters as it can inspire other women to believe in themselves and pursue careers in any field they choose, regardless of societal expectations. Additionally, in these roles, I have learned the importance of being calm under pressure, offering empathy to those in crisis, and working as part of a team. These skills are transferable to any profession, and I aim to bring this sense of empathy, care, and teamwork into my future role as an educator.
Transitioning into teaching English, I plan to make a significant impact on my students by fostering a classroom environment that encourages both academic and personal growth. I want to help my students build critical thinking, reading, and writing skills while encouraging them to explore literature as a way to understand the world and their place in it. I aim to make my classroom a safe space where students feel comfortable expressing themselves, exploring different perspectives, and connecting their own experiences with what they read. By using literature to address important social issues—such as identity, social justice, and mental health—I hope to guide my students toward becoming compassionate, informed, and empathetic individuals.
Through all of these roles, I plan to advocate for mental health awareness, especially within the high-stress professions I am a part of. As a first responder, I’ve seen how mental health struggles are often overlooked, and I believe that by being open about mental health, I can help reduce stigma and create a culture of support. In the classroom, I plan to create an environment where students feel comfortable discussing their emotions and mental well-being. By encouraging open dialogue and offering emotional support, I hope to contribute to a world where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health.
Ultimately, I see my future as an intersection of service, empathy, and education. Whether through direct action as a firefighter or EMT or by fostering personal growth and academic achievement as a teacher, I hope to create lasting positive change. My goal is not only to help people in crisis but also to inspire and educate the next generation, showing them the value of empathy, resilience, and service to others. In doing so, I hope to leave a meaningful impact on my community and contribute to a more compassionate and understanding world.
Bulkthreads.com's "Let's Build Together" Scholarship
One of the most important things I want to build is a career that bridges my passion for helping others with my love for teaching and service. I have spent time working as an EMT and firefighter, roles that have allowed me to connect with and serve my community in critical moments. As fulfilling as this work is, I want to expand my impact by pursuing a career as an English teacher. This career path will allow me to shape young minds, provide emotional and academic support, and help build a more literate, empathetic, and informed generation.
In pursuing this goal, I am laying the foundation to build something that will last for many years: a future where I can help students not only develop essential reading and writing skills but also foster the personal growth and resilience that education can inspire. Through literature, I want to teach my students about the world around them and provide them with the tools to understand themselves better. Whether it's through exploring themes of identity, social justice, or resilience, I plan to use books and discussions as gateways to open up broader conversations that are critical for personal development.
Additionally, my background in emergency services has given me a deep sense of empathy and urgency in serving others. It has shown me how important it is to have support during difficult times, and I want to bring this understanding into my classroom. By being an advocate for mental health awareness and creating a safe space for students to express their thoughts and struggles, I hope to build a classroom environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. I want to offer more than just academic lessons—I aim to nurture emotional well-being and provide a sense of community.
On a personal level, this journey of becoming an educator is also about building my own resilience and confidence. It’s a challenge I am eager to take on, and it’s a way for me to create a life that reflects my values of service, support, and lifelong learning.
By building a future that combines teaching with my experiences as a firefighter and EMT, I hope to positively impact both my students and the broader community. I believe education is one of the most powerful tools for change. I hope to inspire the next generation to not only be informed but also to be kind, empathetic, and ready to make a difference in the world around them.

My family has been deeply affected by my grandfather’s diagnosis of liver cancer, as it has brought emotional, financial, and physical challenges to everyone involved. His diagnosis has forced us to confront the reality of mortality while also strengthening the bond between us. As we’ve navigated the emotional strain of supporting him through treatment and coping with the uncertainty of his prognosis, I’ve witnessed the resilience and selflessness of my family members. At the same time, the experience has also shed light on the struggles that come with caregiving, as several family members have stepped in to support his needs, making significant sacrifices in their personal lives.
One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned from this experience is the importance of cherishing the time we have with loved ones. Cancer has a way of putting things into perspective—making us realize that life is fragile, and the moments we share with our family are precious. This realization has encouraged me to be more present and compassionate in my relationships, recognizing that life can change unexpectedly, and those moments we sometimes take for granted are irreplaceable. It has shifted my perspective on what truly matters, and I now hold deeper gratitude for everyday moments spent with family and friends.
Additionally, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the emotional toll that illness can take on not only the individual diagnosed but also their family. It’s easy to overlook how deeply caregivers can be affected, as they often prioritize their loved one’s needs over their own. I’ve learned the significance of being attentive to the emotional and mental health of those providing care, encouraging them to seek support when needed and ensuring that they also receive the care and attention they deserve. Recognizing the emotional weight carried by caregivers has motivated me to offer support where I can and advocate for their well-being.
Through this experience, I have also learned to find strength in vulnerability. It has taught me the value of open conversations and how sharing our fears, hopes, and struggles can bring us closer together as a family. The journey of caring for my grandfather has deepened my empathy and has motivated me to continue being a source of support for others facing similar challenges. Overall, my grandfather’s diagnosis has profoundly impacted my family, teaching me about the power of love, support, and resilience during difficult times. It has shown me the value of cherishing each moment and caring for both the person battling illness and those who are helping them through it. My perspective on life, family, and health has forever been shaped by this experience, and I am grateful for the lessons it has imparted.

As a female firefighter and EMT, I am deeply committed to addressing important social issues that impact both my profession and the communities I serve. My experiences in emergency services have shaped my values and goals, particularly in areas such as gender equality, mental health awareness, and educational access. These issues not only reflect my personal growth but also inspire me as I transition into my future role as an English teacher. I aim to contribute to positive change and empower others to pursue their dreams and overcome obstacles.
One of the most significant social issues I am working to address is gender equality, especially in professions like firefighting and emergency medical services, which have long been male-dominated. As a female in these roles, I strive to prove that women can thrive in these physically and emotionally demanding careers. By challenging outdated stereotypes and demonstrating leadership, resilience, and strength, I aim to inspire other young women to pursue careers in fields traditionally considered to be male-centric. I hope my work can serve as an example that gender should never be a barrier to success and that women can excel in any profession if given the opportunity.
Another critical issue I care deeply about is mental health awareness, both within the emergency services profession and in the wider community. Firefighters, EMTs, and other first responders are often exposed to traumatic events that can take a toll on our mental and emotional well-being. Unfortunately, mental health struggles within the first responder community are often overlooked. As someone who has witnessed the emotional impact of this work firsthand, I am dedicated to advocating for better mental health support and resources for my colleagues. Through open conversations and a commitment to normalizing mental health care, I hope to reduce the stigma and encourage others in the field to seek help when needed. This advocacy extends beyond my profession; I believe in the importance of mental health awareness in all communities. By teaching others that mental health is just as important as physical health, I hope to create a culture of understanding where people feel empowered to seek help and support one another.
In my future career as an English teacher, I plan to continue addressing social issues like educational inequality and access to resources. Many students face challenges that go beyond the classroom—challenges like poverty, lack of resources, or mental health issues. I want to create a classroom environment that provides not only academic support but also emotional and psychological support. I plan to use literature as a way to teach empathy, self-reflection, and critical thinking, helping students develop the skills they need to navigate the world around them and confront their own challenges. By fostering a classroom where all students feel valued, respected, and heard, I hope to empower them to believe in themselves and their potential. Whether it’s through exploring diverse perspectives in literature or offering encouragement to students facing adversity, I want to be a teacher who inspires students to pursue their dreams—just as I have done in my own life.
Ultimately, I believe that addressing these social issues—gender equality, mental health awareness, and educational access—requires a holistic approach, combining my work in emergency services with my future role as an educator. By breaking down barriers, advocating for mental health, and fostering inclusive, supportive learning environments, I hope to make a lasting impact on both individuals and communities. Through my journey as a female firefighter, EMT, and future teacher, I am committed to empowering others, inspiring positive change, and making the world a more inclusive and supportive place for everyone.
Ella's Gift
Throughout my life, I have navigated the challenges of mental health struggles and emotional abuse, which have shaped me into the person I am today. These experiences, though difficult, have taught me invaluable lessons in resilience, personal growth, and self-compassion. As I pursue higher education and a career dedicated to helping others, I carry with me the knowledge of my past and the determination to rise above it, using my struggles to fuel my aspirations and continue my healing journey.
From a young age, I was exposed to emotional abuse, which created an environment where love and support were conditional. I learned to silence my own needs and prioritize the emotions of those around me. The constant criticism, manipulation, and emotional neglect I faced from those who should have been my protectors deeply affected my mental health. As a result, I struggled with self-worth, anxiety, and depression. It felt as though I was trapped in a cycle of self-doubt and fear, constantly questioning my abilities and my place in the world. These challenges extended into my academic life, where I often felt disconnected from my peers and struggled to concentrate or find joy in learning. My mental health battles weighed heavily on me, leaving me feeling isolated, misunderstood, and unsure of how to move forward.
Despite these obstacles, I began to take small steps toward healing. The first step in my recovery was acknowledging the emotional abuse I had endured and accepting that it was not my fault. This was an empowering realization that allowed me to begin untangling the web of shame and guilt that had been woven around my self-worth for years. Over time, I began to understand the importance of setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and acknowledging my emotions rather than suppressing them.
Personal growth has been a constant process of unlearning harmful beliefs and replacing them with healthier ways of thinking and living. I learned that my value was not dependent on the approval of others and that I had the power to shape my future through intentional choices. This shift in mindset was instrumental in my journey toward emotional healing and recovery. I took responsibility for my mental health, prioritizing my well-being and seeking help when needed. I also surrounded myself with supportive individuals who lifted me up and encouraged my growth, fostering positive relationships that reinforced my belief in my own worth.
As I worked through my personal struggles, I realized that I wanted to use my experiences to help others. I found that education—both as a student and as a potential future educator—was a key part of my healing process. Learning about subjects that intrigued me, such as literature and psychology, helped me develop a sense of purpose and identity outside of my past trauma. I came to understand that education could be a powerful tool for transformation, not just for personal knowledge but for emotional and psychological healing as well. This realization solidified my decision to pursue a career in teaching, with the goal of creating a safe and supportive space where students feel valued and empowered to overcome their own challenges.
As I continue my recovery journey, managing my mental health remains a top priority. I recognize that healing is not a linear process and that setbacks are a natural part of the journey. To continue managing my mental health, I rely on the strategies I’ve learned in therapy, including mindfulness techniques, journaling, and self-reflection. I also remain committed to maintaining a support system of friends, family, and mental health professionals who provide me with guidance and encouragement. Additionally, I make time for activities that promote my well-being, such as exercise, creative outlets, and hobbies that bring me joy. I’ve learned the importance of balancing my academic and professional goals with personal time for relaxation and rejuvenation. I’m also dedicated to seeking continuous growth through education, not only to improve my career prospects but to nurture my own self-awareness and emotional resilience.
Looking forward, I am determined to use my experiences to inspire others, particularly those who have faced similar struggles. I want to be a teacher who fosters understanding, empathy, and resilience in my students, especially those who may feel overlooked or undervalued. I believe that education has the potential to be a healing force, and I am committed to using my platform as an educator to make a positive impact on the lives of others. My hope is that by sharing my story and promoting mental health awareness, I can help break the stigma surrounding emotional abuse and mental health struggles, encouraging others to seek help and embrace their own healing journeys.

Exemplifying a spirit of excellence in my everyday life is something I strive for with both intentionality and consistency. I believe that excellence is about more than just achieving the highest standards—it's about approaching every task with dedication, a willingness to learn, and a mindset that aims to improve both myself and the world around me. In my daily life, I commit to giving my best effort in everything I do, whether it's in my academic work, personal relationships, or professional endeavors. This includes paying attention to detail, staying focused even in challenging situations, and continuously seeking ways to grow.
In my academic life, I maintain a strong work ethic and approach each assignment with discipline and curiosity. I understand the value of hard work and perseverance, which often means going above and beyond what is expected. I also embrace constructive feedback, using it as a tool for self-improvement rather than viewing it as a setback. I aim for personal growth through consistent effort, whether that’s taking on leadership roles in group projects or seeking out extra resources to enhance my knowledge. Similarly, I try to apply this spirit of excellence to my relationships, whether by offering support to my friends or prioritizing open communication and respect in every interaction.
As a volunteer firefighter and EMT, my commitment to excellence becomes even more apparent. In these roles, excellence is a matter of life and death. I hold myself to the highest standards when responding to emergencies, as I recognize that every decision I make can have a profound impact on someone's well-being. The training required to be an effective EMT or firefighter is extensive, and I dedicate myself to mastering the skills and knowledge necessary to provide the best care possible in any situation. This means not only knowing the technical aspects of the job but also staying calm under pressure, maintaining clear communication with my team, and showing empathy and compassion to those in need.
Volunteering as a firefighter and EMT also means consistently giving back to my community. Beyond responding to emergency calls, I participate in local community outreach programs, fire prevention education, and safety training. Whether it’s visiting schools to educate students about fire safety or volunteering at local events, I am always looking for ways to make a positive impact. These actions allow me to connect with my community in a meaningful way, and they help me build trust with the people I serve.
The heart of my volunteer work is a deep desire to help others and make a difference. The spirit of excellence I embody in these roles is about doing the right thing when no one is watching, continually striving to improve, and being someone my community can rely on in times of need. It’s about showing up, no matter the circumstances, with integrity, competence, and compassion. Through my work as a firefighter and EMT, I am honored to give back to my community, offering my skills and time to help others, and contributing to the safety and well-being of those around me.
Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success, for me, is not defined by a singular achievement or a specific milestone but by the ongoing process of growth, learning, and making a positive impact on others. It’s about pushing through challenges, embracing opportunities for personal and professional development, and staying true to my values and passions. Success is when I feel like I am living authentically, whether that’s through meaningful work, contributing to the well-being of others, or constantly striving to better myself. It’s not about perfection, but about progress, resilience, and the ability to learn from mistakes and setbacks.
One of the most significant aspects of success for me is the ability to inspire and help others. As someone pursuing a career in teaching, I see success as being able to connect with my students and make a lasting difference in their lives. Success in teaching, to me, is when students feel empowered to believe in their own potential and are encouraged to pursue their passions, regardless of the challenges they face. If I can instill a love for learning, build confidence in my students, and provide them with the tools they need to succeed both in school and beyond, I will feel that I’ve succeeded in my purpose as an educator.
This opportunity, particularly in the form of a scholarship, will play a critical role in helping me achieve this vision of success. Pursuing a degree in education, particularly in the field of English, is a major stepping stone toward becoming the kind of teacher I aspire to be. The financial support from this scholarship will allow me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial burdens of higher education, which have been a significant challenge for me. With this scholarship, I will be able to access the resources, tools, and learning experiences that are essential for my academic success. It will help me complete my degree with fewer financial obstacles, enabling me to dedicate my time and energy toward developing the skills I need to be an effective and compassionate teacher.
Moreover, this opportunity will help me grow not just as a student but as a person. With the financial assistance to further my education, I will be able to focus on expanding my knowledge, refining my teaching practices, and gaining the experience necessary to make a meaningful impact in the classroom. It will also allow me to engage in experiences outside of the classroom, such as internships or volunteer work, that will shape me into a well-rounded educator capable of understanding and addressing the diverse needs of my future students.
In the long term, I see this scholarship as a catalyst for achieving my goals of becoming a teacher who empowers students and fosters a positive, inclusive, and enriching learning environment. By supporting my education, this scholarship is not just helping me complete a degree—it’s helping me take one step closer to my ultimate vision of success: becoming an educator who not only teaches but truly inspires students to believe in themselves and their abilities. This opportunity will serve as the foundation for my future, propelling me forward in my academic journey and helping me make a difference in the lives of others.
Jeanne Kramme Fouke Scholarship for Future Teachers
I am pursuing a career in teaching because I have always believed in the transformative power of education and the significant impact that teachers can have on their students’ lives. Throughout my own educational journey, I have been lucky to encounter educators who inspired me, believed in me, and helped me realize my potential. These teachers didn’t just impart knowledge—they created environments where students felt safe, valued, and encouraged to grow. The way they shaped my understanding of the world and myself has had a lasting effect on me, and it’s that kind of influence I want to have on others. High school students are navigating a period of personal and academic development, and I want to be there to support them through it as they learn to navigate the complexities of the world around them.
One of the main reasons I am drawn to teaching is my deep passion for literature and language. I have always been fascinated by the power of storytelling and the way words can change perspectives, ignite imaginations, and encourage empathy. English is more than just grammar and punctuation to me; it’s about learning to think critically, express oneself clearly, and connect with others through shared stories. I want to inspire my future students to appreciate literature not only for its aesthetic beauty but for its ability to teach valuable lessons about life, society, and humanity. I believe that by engaging with literature, students gain the tools they need to become more empathetic, thoughtful, and engaged citizens. It’s my goal to foster a love for reading and writing that will stay with them long after they leave the classroom.
In addition to my passion for English, I am deeply committed to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel seen, heard, and respected. High school is a time when students often face personal challenges—whether it’s struggling with self-esteem, dealing with the pressures of adolescence, or navigating the complexities of social relationships. I want to be someone who not only supports their academic growth but also their emotional and personal development. I’ve experienced how powerful it can be to have a teacher who shows understanding and care, especially when a student may be going through difficult times. I want to offer that same support to students who may need someone to help them navigate the emotional hurdles they face. I aim to build strong, trusting relationships with my students so they feel comfortable expressing themselves, taking risks in their learning, and finding their voice.
As a teacher, I will be constantly learning—not just from textbooks, but from my students, my colleagues, and my own experiences in the classroom. The challenges that come with teaching—such as finding new ways to engage students, adapting to different learning styles, and addressing diverse needs—are what make the profession so rewarding.
Ultimately, my goal as a teacher is to make a meaningful, lasting impact on my students. I want them to leave my classroom not just with a stronger understanding of English but also with greater confidence in themselves as learners and as individuals. I want them to feel empowered to tackle challenges, pursue their passions, and believe in their ability to succeed. For me, teaching is about more than just sharing knowledge—it’s about inspiring students, helping them grow into their best selves, and providing them with the tools they need to navigate the world with curiosity, compassion, and confidence. I believe that as a teacher, I have the privilege of shaping the future by helping young people develop into thoughtful, engaged, and empathetic members of society.
Social Anxiety Step Forward Scholarship
My experience with anxiety has significantly shaped how I navigate both everyday situations and long-term goals. Anxiety often leaves me feeling overwhelmed by tasks that should be simple, causing me to overthink and second-guess myself. I worry excessively about outcomes beyond my control, which makes decision-making challenging. Social situations, public speaking, and even routine interactions can trigger feelings of dread, often making me feel like I'm walking on eggshells. This constant unease has sometimes prevented me from fully embracing opportunities or pursuing things that are important to me, as the fear of failure, rejection, or judgment looms over everything I do.
Compounding this anxiety is the emotional abuse I experienced during my childhood, which further deepened my mental health struggles. Growing up in an emotionally abusive environment, I faced constant criticism, belittlement, and manipulation. I learned early on that my feelings didn’t matter and that my worth was defined by how well I met the expectations of those around me. The constant barrage of negativity and invalidation created a deep-seated belief that I wasn’t enough, no matter how hard I tried. This was particularly damaging because it instilled a cycle of self-doubt that made me question my abilities, even in situations where I had no reason to doubt myself.
Emotional abuse often reinforced the idea that expressing vulnerability or showing emotion was a weakness. In a household where emotional expression was met with dismissal or ridicule, I learned to suppress my feelings to avoid conflict. As a result, I have carried this suppression into adulthood, making it difficult to communicate openly with others, even when I need support. This emotional repression only worsened my anxiety, as I internalized my feelings, often leading to moments of intense stress and emotional overload. Over time, I began to develop a fear of being judged or rejected, which led me to withdraw from others and avoid situations where I might be vulnerable.
These combined struggles with anxiety and the lingering effects of emotional abuse have made it difficult for me to navigate life with confidence. I often feel like I am fighting against myself, constantly battling the negative thoughts and feelings that were instilled in me during my formative years. Despite my accomplishments, the fear of not being “good enough” continues to hold me back. These experiences have also caused me to question my self-worth, which sometimes prevents me from taking risks or pursuing my true passions, out of fear of failure or disappointing others.
Pursuing a college degree is important to me because it represents an opportunity to break free from the limiting beliefs and fears that have controlled my life for so long. College offers a structured environment where I can focus on my academic and personal growth, providing the space to challenge the negative thought patterns that have held me back. Earning a degree is not just about academic success but about proving to myself that I can overcome the barriers my past has created. It symbolizes a chance to redefine my sense of self-worth and reclaim my confidence. I see college as a path to building resilience, learning to manage my anxiety, and preparing for a future where I am empowered to pursue my goals.
In addition to gaining the academic knowledge necessary for my future career, pursuing a degree will give me the opportunity to develop a sense of independence and personal growth. It will allow me to take control of my narrative and reshape the way I view myself.

Growing up in an emotionally abusive household deeply impacted my mental health, and not having access to therapy only intensified the difficulties I faced. The emotional abuse I endured created an environment of constant fear, insecurity, and self-doubt. I learned to suppress my emotions as a means of survival, but over time, this led to deeper mental health struggles that I had no proper tools to cope with.
From an early age, I was taught that expressing my emotions was dangerous. Vulnerability was met with ridicule or dismissal, and any attempt to voice hurt feelings or frustrations was often met with punishment or guilt. As a result, I became very disconnected from my own emotions. I learned to hide my pain and pretend everything was fine, even when it wasn’t. This emotional suppression resulted in heightened anxiety. I was always on edge, fearing that I might say the wrong thing or upset someone. The constant worry about the emotional state of those around me left me anxious and unsure of how to respond in various situations, particularly in social or family settings.
In addition, the lack of therapy meant that I didn’t have a healthy outlet to process the trauma I was experiencing. Without the guidance of a professional, I had no way to understand or deal with the harmful behaviors that were being modeled around me. I began to internalize feelings of worthlessness, believing that I was never good enough. Despite achievements or positive feedback from others, I struggled to accept compliments or celebrate success, as I had been conditioned to think that nothing I did could ever be enough.
Without therapy, I didn’t have the tools to identify these damaging thought patterns. I often felt stuck in a cycle of self-blame and emotional exhaustion. My relationships with others were also impacted, as I struggled to trust people or express vulnerability. I feared being judged or rejected, so I kept my emotions hidden, even from those closest to me. This made it difficult to build deep, trusting connections with others.
Though therapy was inaccessible to me, I have sought alternative ways to cope, such as self-help books and talking with friends. While these have been helpful, they’ve never fully addressed the trauma I experienced. Therapy would have provided me with the opportunity to understand my emotional pain and gain practical tools to cope with it.
In conclusion, growing up in an emotionally abusive household and not having access to therapy has significantly impacted my mental health. The emotional abuse led to anxiety, self-doubt, and difficulty expressing my emotions, and without therapy, I was left to navigate these challenges on my own. I’m working on healing, but I know that therapy could have accelerated my progress and given me the tools to overcome the lasting effects of emotional abuse.

I've always been passionate about making a positive impact on people's lives, particularly those who face challenges that make everyday tasks more difficult. My interest in supporting individuals with special needs developed after volunteering at my town's rescue squad and fire department. There I worked with children and adults through various challenges in their lives. This experience opened my eyes to the unique obstacles they face, but also to their incredible strength, resilience, and potential.
Through my volunteer work, I learned valuable lessons about patience, empathy, and the importance of creating inclusive environments. I also realized that sometimes the simplest changes - like better communication or providing extra time for tasks - can make a world of difference. These lessons have shaped my approach to helping others, as I strive to create spaces where everyone feels supported and valued.
What struck me most during my time volunteering was the diversity of the individuals I worked with. Whether it was helping children with autism, assisting adults with developmental disabilities, or simply providing companionship to someone who had difficulty communicating, I quickly realized that everyone has different needs and strengths. I learned how important it is to listen and observe, to adapt, and to be patient, as each person's journey is unique. This taught me not just how to offer assistance, but how to empower others to gain confidence in their abilities, whether big or small.
Through these experiences, I also recognized the importance of advocating for greater inclusivity and accessibility. Often, individuals with special needs are overlooked or underestimated in broader society, whether it's in education, the workplace, or social environments. I've seen firsthand the power of creating inclusive spaces where people are celebrated for who they are, not defined by their disabilities. It is in these kinds of environments where true growth and connection can happen.
I am motivated to pursue a career in this field because I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to lead a fulfilling life regardless of their abilities. I hope to make a difference by providing direct support and advocating for better resources, policies, and understanding for individuals with special needs. While I am committed to continuing to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to make a meaningful impact, I would greatly benefit from financial barriers limiting my potential. The cost of education and resources required to work in this field is significant, and receiving financial assistance would enable me to focus fully on my studies and hands-on experiences, ultimately equipping me to better serve individuals with special needs.

I am interested in pursuing a career in teaching because I've always been passionate about helping others unlock their full potential. Teaching offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on individuals' lives by guiding them toward discovering their strengths, building confidence, and developing critical skills for their futures.
For me, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is the chance to empower students. Whether it's helping them grasp a difficult concept, encouraging their creativity, or supporting them through challenges, being part of their growth is incredibly fulfilling. I love the idea of being a part of someone's journey - not just academically, but personally, too. It's about showing them that they are capable of achieving their goals and encouraging them to believe in themselves, even when the path seems tough.
Encouraging students to believe in themselves is a cornerstone of effective teaching, especially in environments where students may struggle with confidence or face challenges that make learning more difficult. The belief in one's own potential is transformative - it's what drives students to overcome obstacles, push past setbacks, and keep working toward their goals.
Teaching also allows for constant learning and growth. I'm drawn to the dynamic nature of the profession - how every student brings something unique to the table, and how educators need to adapt their approaches to meet each student's needs. I thrive in environments that require flexibility, creativity, and collaboration, and teaching provides all of that. Teaching is not a static profession; it requires adapting to new methods, technologies, and educational trends. There's always room to improve, learn from students, and innovate in how to engage them. For someone who loves intellectual stimulation, the teaching profession provides endless opportunities to expand your knowledge base while also guiding others through their learning journey.
Moreover, teaching is rewarding on a deeply personal level. There's something incredibly fulfilling about helping a student achieve something they didn't think was possible - whether that's mastering a difficult concept, gaining confidence, or achieving a personal goal. Watching a student's growth, both academically and emotionally, brings a sense of purpose that's hard to replicate in other professions. The connections you build with students also make the career uniquely fulfilling. You become a part of their lives, helping them navigate not only academic challenges but also life's broader challenges.
Ultimately, my desire to become a teacher stems from my deep belief in the power of education to transform lives. It's about more than just imparting knowledge; it's about inspiring curiosity, fostering critical thinking, and helping students become lifelong learners who are ready to face the challenges of the world with confidence and resilience. It blends personal fulfillment with professional growth, creativity, and the chance to make a difference in the world. It's a profession that demands passion, patience, and a genuine desire to help others realize their full potential.

Professor Harold Bloom's quote from "Possessed by Memory" suggests that the essence of teaching is to help students become aware of their individuality and self-awareness. In this context, "bringing the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence" means guiding them toward recognizing their unique value, abilities, and identity in the world around them. It's about fostering a sense of self-worth and understanding, helping the student realize their potential and how they fit into the broader landscape of human experience. Bloom's perspective calls on educators to nurture students in a way that connects their learning to their inner sense of who they are, which transcends academic knowledge alone.
In special education, this concept becomes even more crucial. Students with special needs often face challenges that can affect their self-perception. As a special education teacher, my mission would be to create an environment where students not only learn academic content but also feel understood, valued, and empowered to express themselves. I would focus on building strong, trusting relationships, ensuring that every student's unique needs, strengths, and challenges are recognized and celebrated.
To guide students to experience a sense of their own presence, my approach would include the following: individualized learning, promoting self-advocacy, celebrating big and small achievements, creating a safe and supportive environment, and encouraging reflection. Understanding that every student has a unique way of learning, I would tailor lessons to match their abilities and interests. By doing so, students would feel that their learning journey is respected, which boosts their sense of competence and self-worth. Encouraging students to express their needs and preferences would help them develop confidence in their ability to navigate the world. Teaching them to advocate for themselves gives them a voice and fosters self-awareness. Recognizing even the smallest progress in a student's academic or personal development helps them feel valued and capable. Whether it's a social skill gained or a breakthrough in literacy, acknowledging their achievements builds a sense of accomplishment. The classroom should be a place where students feel safe to explore, make mistakes, and be themselves without fear of judgment. This creates an environment where students can develop an understanding of themselves and their potential. Incorporating activities like journaling, group discussions, or one-on-one talks can help students reflect on their growth and experiences. By regularly encouraging them to think about their emotions, strengths, and goals, they can become more attuned to their own sense of identity.
By focusing on these strategies, I would aim to bring each student closer to their "sense of presence", helping them understand that they matter and that they have the power to shape their journey. The goal is not only academic growth but also personal empowerment, helping each student become more aware of their place in the world and their unique contribution to it.
