Stephen "Mike" Flinders Agriculture and Animal Care Scholarship
My name is Emma Emnett, I am 16 years old and from a small rural town in Ohio. I have been raised on a farm, and around livestock for my entire life. I believe that Agriculture is a major part of today's world and impacts everyone's lives. I believe that many more people need to be involved and informed about the Ag industry. This is something I am attempting to do everyday. From a very young age I have had a passion for agriculture. My parents train horses, so I have been riding since I was in the womb (literally). Ag is the most important aspect of my life. As a child I was raised that the animals' needs always come before mine, I do not eat until they do, they must be fed before I am. After all, these are our source of income, and it is our job to give them the best life that's possible. I have shown horses all over the country, from Ocala Florida, to Fort Worth Texas, to just outside of New York City. At the ripe age of sixteen, I can say agriculture is the reason I have already been able to see most of the world. The opportunities this reaches out to so many of us are unreal. Agriculture has the ability to touch lives in many different ways. Now, I have slowed down on showing horses, and am working on my own show pig operation. I have 5 sows and tend to them everyday. During the summer I spend everyday working with my show pigs, and showing. I do not have time for much else, but that is fine with me as this is my dream. In the future, I plan to expand my operation, continue to push my name out there, and hopefully one day make it big. I will also help run the family farm. While pursuing a degree in Pharmaceutical Agriculture, so I can make medication for the industry I love. I came to know about this degree from one of my friends I met. She is truly an inspiration to me. She is a prime example of the amazing people this industry can connect you with. In all, my love for agriculture is unmatched. I have loved all animals since I was born. I cannot wait to use this scholarship opportunity to achieve my dreams, as well as help many animals have better lives.
      Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success to many is seen as a large achievement for themselves, or simply, winning. But, what is the deeper meaning to winning, and success? Well, there is no definite answer to this, only what each person perceives them as. For some, success could be winning a ball game. For myself, I find that life is much more enjoyable when you find he small things, and use yourself to help others reach success. This is my definition of success, seeing the joy on someone's face after they've passed a test you helped them study for. Letting that boy have your pen because he liked it, and watching the smile on his face as he walks away. Complementing the girl who walks with her head down around school, and seeing her slowly change into a more confident and powerful woman. Success is found in small amounts, not only big heaps. You may ask, how did I come to reach this opinion? My short answer would be, a lot of time and heartache, but my longer answer would be this. A few years ago I found myself yearning for big things, which is good, but this is all I could see. I lost my relationship with Jesus, my friends, my family, and overall my joy for life. I fell into a hole, lost, and not knowing how to climb out. I was pushing so hard for success in grades, and athletics, that I could not enjoy my life. Hours of schoolwork, with hours of training every single day led me to extreme burnout, and in all honesty, I had no energy to do any of it. Now, this is no sob story, but this needed to be said. The only thing that saved me from this is when the burnout started to be shown in the major success I was reaching for. My grades dropped, along with my performances. After months of this I realized something must change. I had to find joy in the little things everyday, to truly be happy, and to be able to reach my goals. This took time, but eventually I was happy just to catch the green light at the intersection, or watch the sunset at the end of the day. I learned to enjoy the small things in life. After I learned this, my life improved drastically, and I realized I need to be a light in others lives and help to teach them the same, to succeed. You never know how much small thing could brighten someone's day, and I now live by this. I am not completely sure what I want to do with this skill I have acquired, as I am only a Sophomore in high school. I do know one thing though, I will not waste it. I will put this to good use and dedicate my life to making a difference. I can assure you that this scholarship will go to good use. I will use it to achieve my dreams of lifting others up in my career. This may be by being a teacher, or possibly even a lawyer. If you take anything away from me, let it be this. No act of kindness ever goes unnoticed. Success is found in the little things.
