My experience with mental health has been very positive in developing the outlook I have on life. I was born on May 28,2008 with only one arm. While other kids my age were able to do certain activities at an early age, I had to learn and adapt to a different way of doing things, which became a new normal for me. I tried not to let my physical disability stop me from doing what I loved. I participated in baseball, karate, and basketball.
When I was 7 years old, I faced another challenge. A dissected artery in my neck caused limited blood flow to certain areas of my brain, and this caused a cerebral stroke. I was in and out of the hospital for two years, and I was ultimately diagnosed with vasculitis of the brain.
While facing obstacles that kept me from doing things that I loved, I was determined not to allow these physical problems interfere with the person that I am. It made me grow stronger in my faith and pushed me harder to prove to myself and others that I could do anything in life that I put my mind to.
I feel that I have a strong bond with family and friends and always strive to see the good in people. I have always been willing to help those in need and be able to listen without judgement. This stems from my elementary school years when I sometimes felt alone due to being isolated because of ongoing medical issues at the time. But the one thing that kept me grounded and positive was my relationship with my family. This helped me keep my mind in a good head space during that hard time.
Overcoming the physical and medical obstacles that I faced has been one of my greatest accomplishments. It has driven me to a new level of wanting to achieve my career goals. I am currently on the engineering team for robotics at Kennedale High School, where I am a driver for the robotics team. This is the first time that our team has qualified for state. I can truly say that this program was instrumental in helping me find my area of studies in college.
I was recently accepted into the University of Texas at Arlington Engineering program. My field of study at UTA will be mechanical engineering. I feel like this opens the door to so many opportunities in the engineering world. My career goal is to work for Lockheed Martin.
