FinalistBio
Hello! My name is Emma Croft, and I am a nursing student at Nevada State University (NSU), starting my final semester in Spring 2025. My career goals as a future nurse are to create equity in healthcare, improve patient care practices and outcomes, and improve work environments for healthcare professionals. Long term I would like to pursue a master's degree and conduct research on how we can improve healthcare practices.
I'm very passionate about nursing and have made the Dean's List my first three semesters of nursing school. I am a member of NSU's Academic Queers Club, Garden Club, and the president of the Student Nurses Association. I am passionate about voting and have volunteered as an election poll worker for the last 2 major election cycles and primaries. I care deeply about community and am excited to serve mine as a future nurse!
An important aspect of leading a full and healthy life is engaging in self-care and cultivating healthy hobbies. In my free time I enjoy gardening, creating music, and reading self-help books (I highly recommend Berné Brown!). Finding a balance that allows me to prioritize my education, continue serving my community, and maintain my personal wellness is important to me, and financial stability will enable me to continue on a path towards a balanced and successful life. As a first-generation student with an EFC of zero, I hope to find scholarships and grants to help me finish my BSN (those nursing differential fees are no joke!) with a minor in Psychology.

Chappell Roan Superfan Scholarship
Not to brag, but I am in the top 0.001% of Chappell Roan listeners on Spotify. I find this to be a huge accomplishment, because Chappell is more than just an artist to me. She is representation, an activist, and an icon. I am a lesbian, and I have struggled with this identity for so long. Throughout my life I have been exhausted by the over-sexualization, disgust, and sexism that lesbians face. I once kissed my girlfriend in public and a group of girls nearby all started making noises of disgust. That was in 2019, too! In a college town! The homophobia is alive and well out there against lesbians. To me, being a lesbian meant that most of society would always choose invalidate me, exclude me, and push my representation out of public spaces. All of our TV shows with lesbian representation get canceled (Warrior Nun, Paper Girls, First Kill, I am Not Okay With This, Everything Sucks!, Willow, A League of Their Own, the list is literally endless), hardly any of our politicians are lesbian, and celebrities that come out as lesbian are ostracized, especially by men. As I said before, it's exhausting!
Then came Chappell Roan, and now all of that has begun to change. Her platform exploded, her songs are camp, queer, and so much fun, and suddenly, everyone was talking about her. But it wasn't just her music or rise to fame or Lady Gaga-esque outfits that made an impact on society; it was the way she reshaped public perception of lesbians. Before Chappell, there hadn't really been an openly lesbian artist, with super gay songs, who could sustain a spot at the top of the charts. Good Luck, Babe! has been in Billboard's top 10 for weeks now! Her music, which is unapologetically queer, broke through barriers, and her visibility on a platform as massive as hers brought a fresh, bold representation of the lesbian identity.
Watching Chappell’s rise has been a revelation. Her presence has changed how people perceive lesbians, providing a new, empowering image that resonates deeply with me. It’s thrilling to see the impact she’s having and to feel a part of this significant change. I’ll keep streaming her songs like there's no tomorrow not only because they're great, but because each stream is a victory for lesbian visibility and representation.
