My name is Emily Monk, and I am a high school student graduating in 2026 with plans to pursue a career in dental hygiene. I am currently completing prerequisites and working toward a future in healthcare because I value service, stability, and the ability to make a real difference in people’s everyday lives. Dental hygiene stands out to me because it combines hands-on patient care with education and long-term impact. Oral health is often overlooked, yet it plays a major role in confidence, overall wellness, and quality of life. I plan to make a positive impact through my career by helping patients feel comfortable, informed, and respected. Many people avoid dental care due to fear, financial barriers, or lack of education. As a dental hygienist, I want to be someone who listens, explains without judgment, and helps patients take small but meaningful steps toward better health. I am especially interested in working in community-focused practices where I can support families, children, and individuals who may not always have consistent access to care. By promoting preventative dental health, I hope to reduce long-term health issues and help people feel more confident in themselves. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is learning how to balance school, responsibilities at home, and planning for my future while knowing I will be financially responsible for my education. I do not come from a situation where college expenses are easily covered, so I have had to be realistic, disciplined, and motivated. This adversity has pushed me to become more organized and determined. I’ve learned how to manage my time carefully, stay committed even when I feel overwhelmed, and keep my long-term goals in focus rather than giving up when things feel difficult. Along the way, I have been involved in helping others through volunteering and service-oriented experiences, which have reinforced my desire to work in healthcare. Whether it’s giving my time, supporting family members, or helping in community settings, I’ve learned that impact doesn’t always come from grand gestures, it often comes from consistency and care. These experiences have shaped how I view success, not just as personal achievement, but as the ability to support and uplift others. This scholarship would help ease the financial burden of tuition, books, and educational expenses, allowing me to stay focused on my studies and professional growth. More importantly, it would represent belief in my goals and my commitment to making a difference through my career. I am driven, ambitious, and deeply motivated to build a future where I can support myself, give back to my community, and positively impact the lives of others through dental hygiene

One of the most important people in my life is my great grandpa. He is 102 years old now, and somehow still manages to be the center of our family. He served in World War II, fighting against the Japanese, but when I think about him, I don’t picture medals or uniforms first. I picture him sitting in his chair at our family reunions, everyone gathered around, listening as he talks about his life like it’s a story we’ve all been waiting to hear again. Every other year, he plans a family reunion. He insists on it, even now. No matter how big our family gets, he wants everyone there. When we all finally come together, the day always ends the same way; with him telling stories. Some are about the war, some are about growing up, and some are about moments that seem small but clearly meant everything to him. He tells them slowly, carefully, as if he’s handing each memory to us one at a time. And we sit there quietly, because no one wants to miss a word. When he talks about his time serving in World War II, he never tries to make himself sound like a hero. He talks about fear, about missing home, and about the people he served alongside. Those stories taught me more about courage than any textbook ever could. I learned that bravery isn’t about being fearless, it’s about showing up, even when you’re scared, because something bigger than yourself depends on you. What makes my great grandpa truly special to me, though, is how he has always made me feel seen. No matter how many people are in the room, he remembers details about my life. He asks about school, my goals, and what I want for my future. When he listens, he really listens. That may sound simple, but it has meant everything to me. Knowing that someone who has lived through so much still takes the time to care so deeply has shaped how I treat others and how I want to live my life. He has taught me the value of resilience, connection, and ambition without ever sitting me down to “teach” a lesson. Just watching him continue to bring people together at 102 years old shows me what impact truly looks like. His life reminds me that success isn’t measured by recognition or wealth, but by the number of lives you touch along the way. My great grandpa’s stories are more than memories of the past. They are reminders of where we come from and what we owe to one another. I carry his lessons with me every day, and I know that the way he has lived his life will continue to guide mine

The movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is The Pursuit of Happyness. I did not expect a single film to change the way I think about struggle and success, but this one did. I watched it during a time when I was beginning to worry about my future and whether all the effort I was putting into school would truly lead somewhere. Seeing someone fight through uncertainty while still believing in a better outcome made a lasting impression on me. What affected me most about the movie was how realistic the challenges felt. Chris Gardner did everything “right” by working hard and chasing opportunity, yet he still faced homelessness, rejection, and exhaustion. That reality stood out to me because it showed that life is not always fair, even to people who are doing their best. Instead of giving up, he kept moving forward, one small step at a time. Watching that made me reflect on how I handle my own setbacks and reminded me that progress does not always look immediate. As a student preparing for a career in dental hygiene, I often feel pressure to succeed while managing financial responsibilities and academic demands. There are days when the workload feels overwhelming or when I question if the sacrifices are worth it. This movie helped change my mindset. It showed me that struggle does not mean I am on the wrong path, it often means I am pushing myself toward something meaningful. Chris Gardner’s determination encouraged me to stay disciplined and focused, even when motivation feels low. Another reason this movie impacted me is its message about education. Chris Gardner’s opportunity came from his willingness to learn and commit fully, even when the odds were against him. That idea reinforced my belief that education is one of the strongest tools for creating stability and independence. Pursuing dental hygiene is not just about having a career; it is about building a future where I can support myself, help others, and eventually create a secure life for my family. The movie reminded me that education is an investment, even when it requires sacrifice. The relationship between Chris and his son also left a strong impression on me. His motivation was rooted in love and responsibility, not just personal success. That aspect of the film shaped how I think about my own goals. I want to build a life where hard work leads to security, and where the effort I put in today benefits more than just myself. The Pursuit of Happyness taught me that resilience matters more than comfort, and that persistence can change the direction of your life. Those lessons continue to guide me as I work toward my goals, reminding me that even difficult moments have purpose.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My experience with mental health has shaped my goals, my relationships, and the way I understand the world. I began feeling symptoms of anxiety and depression when I was about eight years old, long before I had the language to explain what I was experiencing. I just knew that my emotions felt heavier than other kids’, and that some days felt much harder than they should have. Over time, I’ve learned how deeply those early experiences shaped who I am and the person I want to become. As a child, I didn’t understand why I worried so much or why certain moments felt overwhelming. I often felt confused by the intensity of my emotions, and I became very tuned in to the feelings and reactions of the people around me. At the time, I didn’t recognize this as anxiety, I simply thought I was “sensitive.” Now, I understand that those early experiences taught me empathy. Because I felt things so deeply myself, I learned to notice when others seemed uncomfortable or upset, even when they didn’t say anything. That sensitivity, which once felt like a weakness, has become one of my biggest strengths. A major part of my mental-health journey also comes from growing up with a parent who struggles with depression. Watching my dad go through difficult periods was confusing when I was younger, but as I got older, it gave me a new perspective. I learned that mental health challenges can affect anyone, even strong, caring adults. Seeing him work through his own experiences helped me feel less alone in mine. It also taught me patience and compassion; for him, for myself, and for others. These experiences have shaped my goals for the future in meaningful ways. I want a life built on stability, understanding, and emotional health. One of the main reasons I’m pursuing a career in healthcare is because I know how important it is for people to feel safe and supported. Many patients come feeling nervous or embarrassed, and I want to be someone who helps them feel comfortable. My own experience with anxiety helps me understand what it’s like to feel overwhelmed, and I hope to bring calmness and reassurance into my future work. My mental-health journey has also shaped my relationships. I’ve learned to communicate more openly and to recognize when I need support. I’ve become more thoughtful about the people I surround myself with, choosing relationships where honesty and kindness are normal. At the same time, I’ve learned to be patient with others, understanding that people often carry struggles they don’t talk about. This awareness has helped me build deeper, healthier connections. Most importantly, my experiences have changed the way I understand the world. I’ve learned that mental health is an important part of everyday life and that strength isn’t about pretending nothing is wrong; it’s about continuing to grow, even when things feel difficult. These lessons have shaped my goals, influenced my relationships, and helped me become a more understanding and resilient person.
    Women in Healthcare Scholarship
I chose to pursue a degree in healthcare because I want a career where I can make a real, lasting difference in people’s everyday lives. For as long as I can remember, I’ve cared deeply about helping others and being someone people can rely on. As I started exploring different career paths, I realized that healthcare is one of the most meaningful ways to support individuals, families, and entire communities. Dental hygiene, in particular, drew my attention because it combines hands-on care, patient education, and long-term relationships—all things that matter to me. Many people underestimate how much oral health affects a person’s life. A healthy smile can improve confidence, prevent medical problems, and help people feel more comfortable in social situations. I want to be part of that positive change. My goal is to be the kind of dental hygienist who communicates clearly, listens without judgment, and helps patients feel at ease. I know not everyone enjoys going to the dentist, so being someone who can turn that experience into something less stressful—and even encouraging—feels important. I want my patients to feel supported, informed, and respected every time they sit in my chair. Being a woman going into healthcare adds even more meaning to my goals. Women make up a large portion of healthcare workers, yet they continue to push against stereotypes and expectations. I want to be part of the generation of women who show strength through compassion, leadership, and consistency. In the dental field, women play a major role in patient communication and education, and I’m proud to take part in that. I hope to grow into someone younger girls can look up to—someone who proves that with hard work and commitment, they can build a stable, rewarding career that truly impacts people’s lives. My desire to establish stability for my future is another reason I’m so dedicated to this path. I’m working toward building a life where I can support myself independently and eventually create the kind of strong, secure family environment I dream of. A career in dental hygiene gives me both financial stability and the flexibility to maintain balance in my life. I want to work in a community I’m connected to, build relationships with patients over time, and contribute to a healthy environment for the people around me. However, continuing my education comes with financial challenges. I’m determined to pay for my own tuition, books, and living expenses, but it’s a lot to manage on my own. Receiving this scholarship would relieve a significant amount of pressure and allow me to focus on what truly matters—my education, my growth, and my long-term goals. With financial support, I could dedicate more time to studying, volunteering, and preparing for admission into a dental hygiene program. This scholarship would not only help me succeed academically but also strengthen my foundation as I begin my career. Ultimately, I chose healthcare because I want my life to be centered around kindness, service, and meaningful work. I want to make a positive impact as a woman in the field by supporting patients, improving community health, and showing strength through compassion. Dental hygiene gives me the opportunity to do all of these things and more. I’m excited for the future I’m building, and this scholarship would bring me one step closer to achieving it.
    Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
Education has given me a clear sense of direction and has helped me understand the kind of future I want to create for myself. Through my classes, especially in science, I discovered my interest in healthcare and realized that becoming a dental hygienist is the path I am most passionate about. Learning about the human body, patient care, and the importance of maintaining good health sparked my curiosity and excitement for this field. I discovered that dental hygiene is a career that combines hands-on skills, attention to detail, and the ability to make a real difference in someone’s life, which aligns perfectly with my personal values. Along the way, I’ve also learned how important consistency, responsibility, and focus are. These skills have shaped the goals I have for myself today and continue to guide me as I prepare for my future. Since I was young, I have struggled with anxiety. At times, it made school, social situations, and planning for my future feel overwhelming. Anxiety could make even simple tasks feel daunting, and there were moments when I doubted myself or worried I couldn’t handle everything on my own. However, over the years, I have learned to manage my anxiety and even use it as a source of growth. It has taught me patience, self-awareness, and resilience. I’ve learned to break tasks into manageable steps, set priorities, and focus on solutions instead of letting fear or stress control me. My anxiety has forced me to develop coping strategies that make me stronger, more organized, and better able to handle challenges. It has also taught me empathy, as I understand how stressful and overwhelming situations can feel for others. These lessons have shaped me into a person who is determined, responsible, and capable of staying focused even when things get difficult. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is balancing school, responsibilities at home, and planning for my future independently. I have learned to manage my time carefully and make intentional choices about how to spend my days. There were times when I felt overwhelmed, but I realized that taking small, consistent steps toward my goals allowed me to keep moving forward. Learning to balance multiple responsibilities has taught me the importance of organization, perseverance, and resilience. These experiences have prepared me to handle the rigor of higher education and the demands of a professional career, where discipline and commitment are essential for success. My hope is to use my education to build a stable and fulfilling career that allows me to support my future family and live a peaceful life in the country. I have always dreamed of a life where I can enjoy the beauty of nature, raise a family, and provide a nurturing home while also pursuing a career that has purpose and impact. At the same time, I want to help others by making dental care a positive, comfortable, and even enjoyable experience for patients in my community. I want to be someone patients can trust, a professional who makes them feel cared for, respected, and confident in their health decisions. This combination of personal fulfillment and community service is exactly what drew me to dental hygiene as a career. Beyond my career goals, I have thought deeply about the kind of person I want to be. I want to be someone who approaches challenges with determination and optimism, someone who uses the skills and lessons I’ve learned through education and personal growth to lift up those around me. I believe that by pursuing my dreams with focus and dedication, I can inspire others to do the same, whether it is through mentoring younger students, helping patients feel comfortable with their healthcare, or being a supportive member of my family and community. My journey has taught me that success is not just about personal achievement but also about contributing to the well-being of others. Managing anxiety, overcoming obstacles, and staying committed to my goals have all taught me that perseverance, self-discipline, and compassion are essential for both personal and professional success. I have learned that challenges are not barriers but opportunities to grow, and that each step forward, no matter how small, builds the foundation for a brighter future. These lessons continue to guide me as I work toward my goal of becoming a dental hygienist, a career that aligns with my values of helping others, building stability, and creating a positive impact in my community. Ultimately, I see my education and experiences as tools that will allow me to create the life I envision—one filled with personal growth, a loving family, a peaceful home in the country, and a career that makes a difference in the lives of others. I am motivated by the knowledge that hard work, focus, and resilience can turn challenges into opportunities, and I am committed to using these qualities to achieve my goals. The lessons I have learned through education, personal challenges, and managing my anxiety have shaped me into a motivated, focused, and compassionate individual. I am confident that with dedication, perseverance, and empathy, I can succeed as a dental hygienist and create a future that reflects both my personal aspirations and my desire to positively impact those around me.
Daniel R. Torres "Complete Your Dream” Memorial Scholarship
My name is Emily Monk, and I will be graduating high school in 2026. Over the past few years, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what I want my future to look like, not just the career I want, but the kind of life I hope to build. For me, those two things go hand in hand. I’ve always wanted a career that matters, one where I can help people and feel proud of what I do every day. At the same time, I want stability, a steady routine, and the chance to someday raise a family in a peaceful, country setting. All of these ideas have led me toward a career in dental hygiene. One of the biggest reasons I’m drawn to dental hygiene is because it’s a field that lets me be hands-on with patients while still offering long-term reliability. When most people think about healthcare, they imagine doctors or nurses, but dental hygienists play a huge role in people’s overall health. They’re often the first people patients talk to during their appointment, and they’re the ones who explain how to take care of their teeth and prevent problems in the future. I like the idea of being that first point of reassurance for someone. Whether it’s a nervous child, an adult who’s had bad experiences at the dentist, or someone who just needs guidance, I want to be the person who helps them feel comfortable and confident about their health. Another major part of why I chose this path has to do with my long-term goals outside of work. I’ve always pictured myself someday starting a family and living in the country; somewhere with lots of space, fresh air, and a slower pace. I want to raise my future kids in an environment where they can play outside, explore nature, and grow up surrounded by calm instead of chaos. To make that happen, I need a career that gives me enough stability to build a home and enough flexibility to actually enjoy the life I’m building. Dental hygiene offers both. It’s known for having consistent hours, good job security, and a schedule that allows you to be present for the people you love. That balance is extremely important to me. Right now, I’m working toward finishing the prerequisites I need for a dental hygiene program. These classes aren’t always easy, but they’ve helped me build a strong foundation in science and strengthened my work ethic. Every step I take, whether it’s studying late, doing extra practice problems, or planning ahead for the next semester, is a step toward the future I want. I know that education is an investment, and I’m committed to putting in the effort it requires. I take my goals seriously because I understand how much they will shape the rest of my life. While my personal dreams are a huge motivation for me, I also think a lot about the impact I hope to have on others. Growing up, I watched how much small acts of kindness from healthcare workers meant to people. Sometimes a simple explanation or a calm voice can change a person’s entire experience. As a dental hygienist, I want to be someone who provides that kind of support. Good oral health is connected to overall health, and many people don’t realize how important it is until someone takes the time to explain it to them. I want to help families feel informed and cared for, especially those who may not have had positive experiences with dental care in the past. Achieving my goals will allow me to build the stable, peaceful life I’ve always imagined, but it will also give me the chance to contribute something meaningful to my community. I want to show that with determination, consistency, and the right support, it’s possible to turn long-term goals into reality. This scholarship would help me cover the costs of tuition, textbooks, and other school expenses that come with preparing for a healthcare career. Receiving this support would not only take financial stress off my shoulders, it would also bring me one step closer to becoming a dental hygienist and eventually creating the family-centered life I hope for.
