As a Cape Verdean-American with two immigrant parents who moved from Cape Verde to America, my background has shaped me into a resilient and determined individual. Raised in a household filled with the knowledge and language of my culture, there was a strong emphasis on hard work. I have developed a solid sense of identity and appreciation for the opportunities available to me.
My interests in art, graphic design, and music have served as my outlet for self-expression and creativity. However, I am now pursuing Sociology as an undergraduate transfer student in the Fall 2025 semester.
My experience in various roles, from being a waitress to working in a kitchen, have instilled in me a strong work ethic and adaptability. It was my time at the Salvation Army, a nonprofit organization serving food to the homeless and aiding them with essential supplies, that truly ignited my passion for making a difference in the lives of others. My diverse background and experiences have equipped me with the ability to connect with people from different walks of life.

Khai Perry All-Star Memorial Scholarship
During middle school, my family was evicted from our home.
That sentence is not a story I tell for pity, but it is the defining flashback of my life. For nearly two years, my family of six lived in a cheap housing complex, and I learned what it means to be unstable. I saw how housing insecurity disrupts everything, from sleep to my mental health. That experience was my obstacle. It was the moment I could have been a statistic, a star falling from the sky before it ever had the chance to shine.
To me, the phrase "not all stars must fall" is a refusal. It means that potential, drive, and dreams should not and cannot be extinguished by socioeconomic barriers. It is a promise that a person is more than their circumstances. During those two years, I made a conscious choice. I would not let my family's trial define my future.
I overcame this challenge by pouring every ounce of my energy into the things I could control. I dove into my studies, determined to build a different future. I graduated as valedictorian while being a dual enrollment student at UMass Dartmouth. I committed to my community, volunteering with The Salvation Army to organize food drives, knowing firsthand what it felt like to be a family in need of support. I dedicated myself to music and sports, which became my anchor and proof that discipline and practice could create something beautiful, even in a difficult time.
But the most important triumph was how this experience inspired me to help others. Khai Perry's biography notes that "a drive to help others was deeply embedded in him." I feel that same drive. My trial did not make me bitter; it gave me empathy. It is the "why" behind my work.
It is why I became a counselor at Crocker Farm Elementary School, leading children from second to sixth grade into routines that are safe, creative, and accepting. When I see a quiet child at the back of the room, I see myself. My experience inspires me to be the listener they need; to help them through their own trials with empathy. This is how I encourage others not to give up. I show them, through my actions and my presence, that their current situation does not have to be their final destination.
That is also why I am majoring in Sociology at UMass Amherst. My goal is to work with children and families shaped by immigration, housing instability, or limited resources. I want to take my lived experience and combine it with academic theory to build programs that truly help. If awarded the Khai Perry All-Star Memorial scholarship, the $500 would directly assist me in pursuing my career endeavors, reducing my reliance on loans. It would also allow me to dedicate more time to my studies and community work.
Thank you for making this scholarship. I am inspired by Khai's legacy of compassion. I aspire to one day create my own non-profit focused on youth empowerment, ensuring that every star in my community has the support they need to shine.
