Hi, my name's Emily Rowan.
I am a 4th year nursing student at Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing. My dream in life is to become a successful Pediatric Intensive Care Unit nurse. Helping families in their most vulnerable state is all that I care about. I know that this job will be stressful, but if I can make a difference in just one family's life that would mean the world to me. Later in life, I plan on going back to school to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.

At eight years old, my father had a heart attack. I was terrified because I did not understand what was happening. I would not listen to my mother or sister because my body was in shock. The only thing that calmed me down while in the hospital waiting room was a nurse who took it upon herself to talk to me. This nurse is the reason I developed the desire to apply to nursing school. If she was not there to ease my stress, I would not have been able to look at my father when I went to visit him later.
Caring for others in a time of need is what I was born to do. When I was young and my friends fell down, I was the first person on the scene to make them feel better. This past semester, I observed children and adolescents on a mental health unit. While I do not see myself as a future mental health nurse, I realize that caring for children who are struggling is my passion. Many times, children are afraid and need someone who will ease that fear. Being that calming person is my life's mission. I know that pediatrics is not always happy, but if I can help families realize the little victories in life, that's all I could ask for. Many people forget that families also need someone to care for them as well. Pediatric nursing is also about caring for the family; calming worrying mothers and fathers is a priority in pediatric nursing.
More specifically, I am interested in pursuing a career in a pediatric intensive care unit. These families need someone to reassure them that days will get better. It is important that a nurse cares for the patient in a holistic way. This means the patient's social factors also must be cared for. Because the patients are children, their families may be extremely important to them. When a family is on the same page as the healthcare team, the care plan is done smoothly.
Overall, my goal as a nurse is that all my patients feel supported and truly seen. I plan to make my career as a PICU nurse one where I care for all my patients with the utmost respect. This scholarship will allow me to enroll in an elective focused on critical care of children. This course is crucial in my education and preparation to be a pediatric nurse.
