I am passionate about my career in the medical profession for one reason only; I want to make a difference to someone’s life. I was mostly inspired by my mom and my cousin Moi. He went to the university of Portland and works with my mom on some occasions. When he spoke at his graduation party, but how much he loved his job, and is proud of the success he could do for others, I felt that touch of a heart. My mother is also very passionate about what she does as well. She enjoys having open conversations with all her patients, making them smile before they must do their routines for the day.
Taking your Child to Work Day is another thing that had me interested in the medical profession. Ever since I was a baby, I spent lots of time playing with doctor/nurse-based toys, and growing up from there into elementary school, they were my favorite set of toys still. When my mom had the opportunity to take me to her work during that occasion, I was super excited because I never really understood at the time what she does on a daily basis. But when I went, I was so astonished by what I saw. I remember seeing my mom take vitals sign, and cleaning wounds for patients. I wasn’t allowed in the room for certain purposes, but I was allowed to watch at the doorway for a little while. I remember walking out with my mom holding her hand saying, “Momma I want to help people. I want to save lives. I don’t want family members to be apart.” And today, I am a senior in high school and want my dream to become a reality.
I would love to be a pediatric nurse and travel nurse. I want to be able to help kids who are struggling in healthcare and not just in the United States, but in other countries of the world. And I feel that sicknesses are very common in the countries because they are limited to medicines or don’t have all the medicines that they need to get better. And the effect I want to have been improving the health of the patients’ families. I am hoping to also to work with all age groups, if possible, but I feel that I won’t succeed with higher age groups. I just don’t want to let anyone down or have to give out upsetting news to the patient’s family. I know that it will occur at some point, there’s always going to be bad news, but I also want to find positives alternatives to help with all solutions like these.

When I tell people about my career choice, they automatically think of money or assume I am doing it because of the money. Money is great, and a valuable thing to keep every person on the Earth financially stable, but I would feel the richest saving someone’s life and making it better for all families. And having people in healthcare being able to go home to their families. I also agree with what God says in the bible about money. Save more, spend less. And that comes from Proverbs 21:10, which says, “In the house of the wise are stories of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.”

I am a Trilingual mixed African American woman. I never considered myself as being mixed growing up, just because my parents are from different countries, yet they are both African. So, it never really occurred to me that much. My mother is from South Sudanese and my father is from Kenya. My mother is Trilingual (Swahili, Arabic, and English) and my father is bilingual (Swahili and English). In my free time I like to watch true crime and law and order. I love to do mini sketches in my small art book. I also love cooking. Cooking is what brings my family together and is how we bond.

East County Math Scholarship
I plan to attend the University of Portland in Oregon to pursue my bachelor's degree in nursing. My most memorable moment in class was my freshman year of High School. My teacher Ms. Baker pulled me aside, and recommended I take Algebra 2 my sophomore year because she had said I was one of her smartest students in the classroom. I never felt like I was good enough for so long because math was my number 1 struggle factor, but Ms. Baker helped me look at it differently after that small moment with her.
I remember being in complete shock at that moment and at the end of the year when I had seen I had passed her class with an A every time. She honestly made learning easier for me at the start of the school year, and I will always be grateful for everything she has accomplished for her students and for myself as well. I used to think growing up I was just dumb at math. In middle school I struggled a lot, and I thought I was stupid. It's the learning styles and methods that teachers perform in which is comfortable for them, and that will help most students understand different material. Reading it over and over until you understand the concept doesn't help everyone in this case. That is why I attend college, I would want my professors to know that if I am ever doing bad in their class it's not because of not trying. It will always be the learning style.
I came to the realization when I was 13 that students aren't struggling because they don't pay attention. They learn at a different pace, and it's ultimately the way a teacher teaches overall. I felt very good about this because I finally was able to have someone who didn't look at me like I was dumb, but rather, she helped me out the most when I needed help in most math situations. There came a point in my class when I started helping other classmates and explaining to them how to do certain equations and word problems they didn't understand well.
I loved helping people out when they struggled the most with it. Algebra wasn't easy. But I showed them different ways to look at it. Overall, this is a moment I will never forget, and asking questions may be scary, but they'll help you in the long run in your life.

I became interested in the medical field (Nursing) when I was 9 years old. I have always been so fascinated with doctor equipment, and love helping others when I have the time to. I plan to be a Travel or Pediatric Nurse, but I really want to do both. I want to be able to help other families in places outside of the United States. I like working among children who are younger because I want to be able to give a hand to all who are struggling with their health and come up with solutions and goals to be the best version of themselves.
My passion for Nursing comes from the heart. I know that I am going to enjoy coming to my job each day of the week as they pass by. I want to be able to come in, sanitize my hands, and get to talking with each patient of mine. I knew that this career was for certain that I would want to pursue when I was in Australia. When I had seen my uncle in the hospital bed, all I was thinking was that I wanted to make a difference in the world among younger adolescents, and other adults in the world. I want God to also be there with me to help guide me to better and efficient solutions that are going to help a person in the long run.
I have a set of goals that are jotted down to help become the person I want to be for all ages of people in the medical profession. I plan to attend university, but with that I want to get into programs that are going to help me learn and benefit my career. I also want to work in Providence, which is a hospital in Oregon, near the University of Portland (the college I plan to attend) to make the days of others and put so many smiles on their faces. Working in this profession definitely will improve my social skills and confidence as a person.
I will wake up each day and pray to God that people who are in healthcare and are struggling won't stop living their life just because of a condition they have. A condition shouldn't limit you to other experiences, and that's what I plan to let every future patient of mine know each day that I come into the hospital.
