Nursing, a profession in which individuals must exhibit characteristics of selflessness and compassion, is a rewarding career path. My interest in this career field was first ignited within me around the age of ten, when I wanted to become a veterinarian and provide medical care to, “man’s best friend,” the dog. I’ve always maintained a passion to follow a career path that would allow me to help others and provide relief. I always put those around me first, even if they were a stranger, which is a statement that fellow peers, teachers, and adults would testify too. However, I knew that veterinary medicine was not my calling in life. I knew that with all the burdens and adversity I had faced throughout my childhood, as I lacked a mother figure, I could use my experiences to provide empathy and assistance to others. Later, around age thirteen, I had my first interaction with the healthcare industry as I took a CPR and first aid course organized by my school. During this program I was able to obtain an idea of what becoming a healthcare professional truly entailed. I listened to EMTs and Paramedics tell their stories of helping people in emergency situations, some of the scariest and most uncertain times of one’s life. Hearing the passion, motivation, and sense of purpose within their voices inspired me to take a further look into healthcare as I entered high school. I made the decision to attend The Burlington County Institute of Technology, a technical and academic school, where I would be granted hands on experiences in the career major course of my choice. With that, I studied in the Allied Health Occupations program. This program was instructed by an experienced RN who provided me with education in the following areas of study: anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and medical assistant. Out of all healthcare careers, the nursing industry interests me the most because it allows you to be hands on with your patient physically, emotionally, and mentally throughout incredibly difficult times of hardship. I enjoy the variety in the routine of the nursing profession, as you must learn to deal with a variety of patient care responsibilities. Stereotypically, people express their concern toward the under appreciation of nurses within todays world; however, I feel as though seeing your patients walk out of the hospital doors healthy provides more than enough satisfaction to continue pursing this career path. As I am in my second year of undergraduate school as a nursing major, I have had the opportunity to work at clinical sites. This experience has been eye opening and reassured my passion in this field. I am beyond prepared to put in the time and sacrifices that come with the extensive studying and learning required. I will take every opportunity to learn and grow as an individual. I have past medical experiences with several cancer diagnoses within family members, one of which ended in my grandma being placed on hospice. Watching the nurses tend to her and provide comfort to her during her last few months showed me the importance of the nursing career. I have certification and educational accomplishments that have helped me in my pursuit of these goals. I first obtained my BSL-CPR and first aid certification. Additionally, I have obtained my OSHA-10 certification within the past year, as well as my CPCT. My goals for a successful nursing career include always continuing my education and becoming an emergency room RN, where I can obtain diverse knowledge in healthcare and later prioritize a speciality to work in.
