Bio

My life goals include helping my family here in the United States and helping my family who currently lives in Mexico and works hard to make a living. I want to have a career that will keep me excited every day and help people. I am a board member of two clubs; Treasurer in Make-A-Wish, in which we fundraise money for children who are critically ill, as well as Secretary for Latinos Unidos, in which we support the Latino community. Considering that my teachers and coach describe me as responsible, hard-working, motivated, and ambitious, which to me is what I believe makes me a great candidate as well.

Elvira Alonso Soto Hispanic Women in Architecture Scholarship
The statistics for the year 2020 include that only 17% of architects are females. As a whole, only 8.7% of architects are Hispanic or Latinx. Architecture has always been a male-dominated career as well as a community with less representation, which is something that I want to change in that working environment considering that I am a first-generation high school student. It is important to have a diverse community because we would not feel left out when it comes to working with others, and we would feel seen and comfortable working with more diverse people. A couple of reasons I choose to pursue a degree in architecture and to further become an architect is that I have always been advanced in mathematics since I was a young girl and design is one of my interests. Furthermore, my dad has a small cabinet-making business, and ever since I was younger, I would often go to some jobs with my dad. Seeing him work hard, demolishing cabinets, designing the interior of homes, and other buildings led me into finding a career path, like architecture. Going to work with my dad motivated me to fall into the interest of designing something and having it come into real-life work. Architecture is not only a career that I will look forward to working in every day because of my interests, but it will always remind me of the hard work my parents had worked through to get me into the position I am in today. Architecture fascinated me with the idea that a design on a blueprint can create a large building or homes that people can work and live in. I not only want to design buildings, but I would prefer to work my way up to becoming a residential architect. A residential architect is where architects build houses, condominiums, townhouses and apartment complexes. Going back to when I was younger, I also learned more about house remodeling with my dad, due to his job as a cabinetmaker, therefore I understand the interior structure of many residential structures. Not only am I interested in residential architecture, but my interest also falls into working in other architectural fields like a landscape architect, which is the design of the outdoor environment such as designing parks, campuses and streetscapes. Having a degree in architecture will give me the opportunity to go into any type of architectural field, whether it is landscape architecture, residential, or even architectural engineering as well.

As of 2020, only 17% of architects are females. Architecture is a male-dominated career in which I want to put change into that working environment. When I was much younger, I would often go to some jobs with my dad, who works in cabinetry. I fell into the interest of designing something and having it come into real-life work. Architecture is not only a career that I will look forward to working in every day, but it will always remind me of the hard work my parents had worked through to get me into the position I am in today. Going back to when I was younger, I also learned more about house remodeling with my dad, due to his job as a cabinetmaker, I understand the interior structure of many residential structures. Not only am I interested in residential architecture, but I am also interested in landscape architecture, which is the design of the outdoor environment such as designing parks, campuses, and streetscapes. I want to bring a creative side into my lifestyle and architecture will hold a significant part in that. Becoming an architect can take five to seven years, four of which are going to a college or university. And the remaining years would consider training and internship for when becoming an architect. A couple of classes in order to become an architect would include mathematics, science, and art. This scholarship will give me the opportunity to pursue going to a university that focuses on architecture. I am able to purchase the books and classes I need in order to become an architect and make a positive change in the working environment for future female architects as well.
