Balancing the responsibilities of being a full-time worker, a full-time student, and a single mom has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. Over time, I have learned that maintaining balance requires intentional planning, discipline, and self-care. I prioritize my time carefully, ensuring that I do not work overtime and that my work hours are consistent so I can dedicate focused attention to my studies and my children. By setting clear boundaries and sticking to my schedules, I am able to create structure in my life, which allows me to manage the demands of school, work, and motherhood without becoming overwhelmed. Self-care has become a critical part of how I maintain this balance. I make time to exercise regularly and spend time outdoors whenever possible, often including my children in these activities so that we can bond while also promoting physical and mental well-being. I have learned that taking care of myself allows me to be more present, patient, and attentive to my children and my schoolwork. Family support also plays a crucial role in helping me navigate these responsibilities. Having relatives in town who are willing to watch my children when I have exams or need intensive study time gives me the opportunity to focus completely on my education while knowing my children are safe and cared for. Despite my busy schedule, I make sure that family routines remain consistent and meaningful. Every evening, I prioritize having dinner with my children, giving them baths, and following a bedtime routine that creates stability and comfort. I do most of my studying and complete assignments after they are in bed, making every moment count while still protecting time for family connection. Additionally, I dedicate Sundays entirely to family, keeping the day free from work and school so that we can spend quality time together. These practices have helped me build a balanced and sustainable lifestyle that supports my personal, academic, and parental responsibilities. Receiving this scholarship would have a profound impact on my ability to continue pursuing my degree in psychology. As a low-income single mother, financing my education while supporting my family is a constant challenge. This scholarship would alleviate some of the financial burden and allow me to focus more fully on my studies and achieving my academic goals. Earning my degree will not only enable me to create a more stable and secure life for my children and myself, but it will also empower me to build a meaningful career helping others who are navigating challenges related to mental health and well-being. Balancing work, school, and parenthood has taught me resilience, time management, and the importance of self-care, routines, and support systems. It has also fueled my determination to succeed and provide the best possible life for my children. This scholarship would allow me to continue my education without compromising the stability and well-being of my family, bringing me one step closer to achieving my dream of a fulfilling career in psychology and a brighter future for my children and me.

Six years ago, my life was forever changed by an unimaginable tragedy. My son and his father both died from a drug overdose. At the time, we were both in early recovery, only a few months clean, working hard to rebuild our lives. My son’s father had him alone for the first time that night, relapsed, and tragically overdosed, and in the process, my son ingested the drugs. When I didn’t hear from him the next day and received a call from my son’s daycare, I rushed to their home, only to confront the unthinkable. The grief that followed was overwhelming and debilitating. I struggled with severe depression, and for a long time, I questioned whether I could survive. Losing a child is a pain unlike any other, a void that reshapes every part of your life. That night became the defining moment of my journey, one that would ultimately teach me about resilience, purpose, and the power of transformation. Despite this devastating loss, I chose to dedicate my life to recovery and service. Through years of hard work, determination, and support from family and friends, I have maintained over five and a half years of sobriety. I have committed myself to education and professional growth, working full-time as a case manager at a men’s drug rehabilitation center while pursuing my bachelor’s degree in psychology and preparing to continue to a master’s in social work. These experiences allow me to channel my grief into empathy, insight, and meaningful support for individuals navigating addiction and mental health challenges. My lived experience has become a tool for connection, understanding, and hope, guiding the work I do and the care I provide to those in need. Today, my life reflects both resilience and intention. I am engaged to an incredible partner and am raising two beautiful, healthy daughters. Every day, I choose to live in a way that honors my son’s memory, transforming pain into purpose by helping those still struggling with addiction. My professional and educational goals are rooted in this mission, to become a certified drug and alcohol counselor and advance in social work, providing informed, compassionate care to individuals and families who face challenges similar to those I once faced. Receiving this grant would allow me to continue my education, strengthen my professional skills, and expand my ability to make a tangible impact in my community. Each step I take, every goal I achieve, is guided by the memory of my son. My commitment to recovery, education, and service ensures that the legacy of his life lives on through the lives I touch. This journey has been defined by both unimaginable loss and remarkable transformation. I honor my son every day by turning grief into hope, using my experiences to guide, support, and inspire others. With this grant, I will continue to grow professionally, serve my community, and make a lasting difference in the lives of those navigating the challenges of addiction, ensuring that the pain I endured fuels positive change for others.
