Shays Scholarship
Something that motivated and inspired me to pursue higher education is my mother; she has pushed me every day and supported me through everything. She is a single mother who put my sister and me first. She could not graduate from college, so I am pursuing a higher education to make her proud. This scholarship will help me pursue my future career goals because it will help me continue paying for my education at the number-ranked school in the nation for forensic science.
The field of science I am pursuing is forensic science crime scene investigation; this is a career I want to pursue because I remember watching forensic files with my grandmother and learning about all the different techniques and procedures that go into solving crimes. It also makes me want to be able to give back and help find closure for families who are going through this. This field excites me because every crime scene will always be different. There will always be something different about each one, and that excites me because I will always enjoy doing the same job every day. After all, it will never be the same. Along with just being a part of something in this world that makes a difference every day, especially with crime and murder rates going up, this will help me and those families so much.
This is a degree that I have wanted to pursue for as long as I can remember because this is something that I can share with my grandmother and my mother. After all, I am doing something that she never got the chance to do. This is for all that she has done to push me to try so hard to be the best I can be in school and as a person.
This scholarship will help me maintain my 3.8 GPA, so it looks better when I can get a job after graduation, and make employers want to consider me and my experience because of the experience and the academic success that I have had.
All of this and these reasons are why I am so passionate about the degree that I am pursuing because this is what I want to do for the rest of my life and hopefully will be able to start to see a difference in the world some day.
I hope you consider me for this scholarship. The money would help me tremendously in my education and future career, and I am a good fit for this scholarship. Thank you for your time and your consideration.

Since I can remember, I grew up watching forensic files with my grandma; it was something she and I loved to do. I want to learn about all the different techniques that go into solving a case and that every part of the process of solving a case matters. It made me want to take a forensic class in high school. I want to be part of that process that matters in helping families find closure. This scholarship will help me pursue my future career goals because it will help me continue paying for my education at the number-ranked school in the nation for forensic science.
This scholarship will help me pay for the last year that I have left so I can continue to graduate a year early with all the college credits that I took in high school; this scholarship will also help because I have a single mother who struggles to help me pay for college. I am a first-year generation student; I want this degree to make her and my grandmother proud and to pursue something we love.
This scholarship will also help me continue pursuing my athletics as well. I am a Division 3 college athlete who plays volleyball while continuing to maintain a 3.8 GPA. This scholarship will help me focus on school and not have to work as much to focus on my education and maintain my grades, along with not having to work and being able to pursue an internship, which is only available during the semesters.
I want to be able to give back not just to my family in my career and make them proud but also to give closure to those who were unable to get closure. Along with just being a part of something in this world that makes a difference every day, especially with crime and murder rates going up, this will help me and those families so much.
This scholarship will help me maintain my 3.8 GPA, so it looks better when I can get a job after graduation, and make employers want to consider me and my experience because of the experience and the academic success that I have had.
I hope you consider me for this scholarship. The money would help me tremendously in my education and future career, and I am a good and right fit for this scholarship. Thank you for your time.
Szilak Family Honorary Scholarship
Hi, my name is Emily Garnett. Throughout this essay I will be sharing information about my relationship with cancer and why it made me choose to pursue a major in STEM. Which will hopefully help you make a better decision about whether I am a good fit for the scholarship
In the summer of 2015, my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer and it affected my relationship with her because it was very scary the thought of losing her. But her getting cancer changed my view on my career goals and my beliefs which pushed me to be a better student, athlete, and most of all a better person. She showed me that she can overcome something so big and come out even stronger in the end and I just want to be able to show her that I can do the same. She made me believe that I could do anything I put my mind to and that is what I have been doing, Throughout all High School and my first year of college and especially by wanting to pursue the field of Forensic Science Crime Scene Investigation because I want to make my grandmother proud and accomplish something for her since she helped me choose this profession.
Many things have affected and influenced my future goal of wanting to pursue a STEM major. One thing that influenced me to study forensics in college is watching Forensic Files, Bones, First Look: American Detective with Joe Kenda, The First 48, NCIS, Crime 360, and Extreme Forensics with my grandma almost every day after school and on the weekends especially when she was sick. Watching it with her and then talking about the science with her and seeing her face light up and smile when I talked about how passionate I was about the science made me want to pursue Forensic Science Crime Scene Investigation for my future goals and my future education, which would eventually lead me to a job in this field and be able to be an intricate part of helping families find the closer they need. How I was able to get closer and reassurance that my grandmother was going to beat and fight breast cancer.
In summary, these are the reasons why I feel that I am a good candidate for the Szilak Family Honorary Scholarship.
Thank you for your time and your consideration of my essay for the scholarship.

Hi, my name is Emily Garnett. Throughout this essay, I will share information about my experiences of growing up with a single mother and how it has shaped me. I hope this will help you better decide whether I fit the scholarship well.
Many things in my life have shaped me, but the thing in life that has shaped me the most is being raised by a single mother. It has been hard growing up without a father in my life. It was hard watching other kids have that experience; this made me turn to the strongest person I know, my mom. If it weren't for my mom, I wouldn't be who I am today. She has given me all her love and support. She is a single mom who never finished college and struggled through high school. She is my role model because even though she struggled through school and didn't finish college, she has created a wonderful life for herself, my sister, and me. My mom puts aside everything for my sister and me, and when we need anything or even a hug or cry, she is there in a heartbeat. But overall, she is my best friend and is someone I can talk to about anything. I realized that if I kept up my grades and was on the honor roll or high honor roll throughout high school, it would look better when I had to apply for college. So that is what I have done. I have been on high honor roll and honor roll throughout high school and my first year of college. Because of that, it has increased my chances for scholarships. Since my mom is a single parent, it has made me want to do better in school and have better options for scholarships so she doesn't have to worry so much when it comes to paying for college. Everything she has done for me is why I have done so well in school and will be why I continue to do well in school; I don't want to let her down. I will make her proud.
Growing up, being raised by a single mother has shaped me for the best because I would not be the person I am today if I did not have my mom playing both roles simultaneously. My mother has shown me what it is like to grow up to be successful and achieve my goals by leading by example, even through hard times in life. She also taught me how to treat people right, like my mother told my sister and me that people come in shapes and sizes, color and creed and that everyone is treated equally. Also, I want to be the best part of myself that I can be every day. She also showed me that even though we may have struggled and have been through hard times, like with money, she taught me how to pull myself through it by finding joy in the little things and not being afraid to ask for help. One example is that I struggle with anxiety. My mom has the same condition, she got me help to talk to a counselor, and I can see the benefits it has in improving my mental health. Those are just some examples of how being raised by a single mom has shaped and influenced the outcome of my life.
I hope to be a good candidate for this scholarship; thank you for your time.

The person who has supported me the most in reaching my educational goals is my mom. My mom she is a single mom who never finished college and struggled through high school. She is my role model in life because even though she struggled through school and didn't finish college she has created an amazing life for herself and for my sister and I. I started to realize that if I kept up my grades and was on honor roll or high honor roll all throughout high school it would look better when I have to apply for college. So that is what I have done. I have been on high honor roll and honor roll all throughout my high school. By being on that it has increased my chances for scholarships. Due to the fact that my mom is a single parent it has made me want to do better in school and have better chances at scholarships so she doesn't have to worry so much when it comes to paying for college. So has always encouraged me to reach for the stars that there is nothing that I can not do, no matter what I put my mind to I was able to and she had supported me through everything. That is why my mom is the person who has supported me and encouraged me to reach my goals not just in education but in everything in life.
