Bio

Hello, I'm Emily Chapell! Thank you for taking the time to view my profile! I am a first-generation college student and an advocate for the idea that through hard work and patience, anyone can defy the odds and achieve their dreams. I am currently working to earn a BM degree in Audio Engineering. Currently, I am working my hardest to earn scholarship money so that I can save money on school and help my mom who raised me all on her own. She sacrificed her retirement to get me where I am today and I want to help give back to her since she is now in her mid-sixties. She is the strongest person I know and her work ethic inspires me every day. I pour all that I can into my academics. To me, my studies do not only benefit me by helping me grow, but they also serve as a window of opportunity for the rest of my life. If I had to fit my main life goal into one short statement, it would be to leave the world in a more positive place than I found it. My academics will help me reach that goal. I have big dreams for the future and with a lot of determination, patience, and faith, I fully intend on making those dreams my reality. Music and audio engineering have always been passions of mine. With my God-given talents and my academics, I want to help make the world a better place in any way that I can. Thank you for your time and consideration.

What would you do if you had access to unlimited food from your favorite restaurant? Maybe you would have a great dinner every night and gain a few pounds. Perhaps, you would invite some friends over for a big meal. For me, this hypothetical situation became a reality. From 2020 to 2021, I worked at my local Chick-fil-A restaurant. I noticed that when receipts were printed, most of them had a survey for a free sandwich on them. If the customer did not want their receipt, the receipt and survey code were simply thrown away. After getting the all-clear from my manager, I began to keep these receipts and complete the surveys on them for free food. I got at least 50 survey receipts each day that I worked. This was any Chick-fil-A lover's dream. I contemplated what I could do with all these free food coupons. I knew I couldn't eat them all myself, nor did I have that many friends to share with. I thought about maybe reselling the coupons for cheap at my school. Then it hit me. What about the people who don't have access to food? This idea sparked a chain of events that brought some good to my community. The city that I live in has a large homeless population. It's impossible for me not to see at least ten or more homeless people on my drive to and from work. I began to redeem a few free sandwiches after my shifts at Chick-fil-A. On my drive home, I would hand out a sandwich to anyone I saw that seemed hungry or in need of help. This became a regular ritual for me after every shift. Sometimes I would see the same people, and sometimes I would see new faces in need of a warm meal. Chick-fil-a sandwiches come in an insulated wrapper that keeps them relatively warm for a little while. This made me think about how I could give more meals to the people that I saw each day. One sandwich only keeps a person full for so long. I began to redeem more and more sandwiches, even on my days off. I would drive around my city looking for those in need and I would hand out however many sandwiches they said they needed. This often was three to four. I would stop at whatever Chick-fil-A was nearest to me and restock and keep searching. Sometimes this would occupy my whole day, but it was worth it to me. Because of this, I heard personal stories from my city's homeless population and I became inspired to try to make a bigger difference. I began volunteering at shelters in my city. Also, in my school's technology lab, I began experimenting with 3D models of tiny homes that could be 3D printed. I conducted research on what 3D printing materials cost and what it takes to build a safe, tiny home. Through my research, I found that it can take as little as $4,000 to print an entire home for someone without a home. This could be a future solution for the homeless population that I grew close to in my city. As just a student, I currently do not have the means to print these houses that I developed prototypes for. However, in the future, I hope to be able to make these homes a reality. This experience taught me that little things, like sandwiches, can spark larger movements. In my life, I hope to create many sparks that result in positive flames in the people of my city, state, and nation.

My name is Emily Chapell. I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. I was raised by my loving mother who has worked endlessly to give me the future that she never had. We have faced many obstacles along the way, but through all of them, we have persevered through hard work and unending faith. The first obstacle that my family has faced was my birth. My mother was told she would never have children. My entire existence was deemed impossible by several doctors. One day, my mother was at the hospital for an illness and she was required to take a pregnancy test as a routine procedure. She had been told her entire life that it was impossible for her to have children and she was now 41 years old, so she assumed it would never be possible to have a positive test. Little did she know, she would have me at 42 years old. The news of her pregnancy was, of course, a shock to her, but she had faith that it would all work out the way it was meant to be. A few months before I was born, my mom had a case of pneumonia that she almost did not survive. She was in the intensive care unit of the hospital for weeks and was struggling to breathe. Thankfully, she eventually recovered from her illness, however, the doctors were convinced that I was harmed by the illness. Because my mom wasn't getting enough oxygen, that meant that I was getting even less. The doctors believed that I would be born with an extreme mental disability or handicap. They were so confident in this diagnosis that they even discussed the option of abortion with my mother on multiple occasions. Thankfully, she never considered that option for a second. I was born with no handicaps or disabilities. That was my first example of defying all odds, and I intend to keep defying them throughout my life. My mother has provided the foundation I need to do that. My father left when I was three months old. Since then, all the expense, responsibility, and stress of raising me has fallen upon her. Thankfully, she had a fairly good job with the Federal Reserve when I was young. No one in my family, including my father, had ever attended college because of a lack of financial means. My mom wanted to do everything she could to change that with me so she enrolled me in a college-preparatory school. When I entered elementarily, everything changed. My mom was let go from her job and we were in a very bad financial situation. We applied for food stamps and my mom worked little jobs to try to make ends meet. She took money out of her own retirement fund to ensure that I got to stay at my school. Fast forward to today, our financial situation is better but still tight. Thankfully, I am still able to attend my school. I have a GPA of 4.5 and an ACT score of 32. I am ranked 12 in my class and I am on track to graduate with my high-school diploma and an AA degree in May. I'm on the president's list at my college and I work a part-time job and volunteer regularly in my community. It is my dream to attend Liberty University and obtain a bachelor's in audio engineering. This scholarship would help me on my path there. Despite the challenges we've faced, it is my mission to make a positive impact on this world and truly defy all odds.

I was raised by a single mother who has worked endlessly to give me the future that she never had. We have faced many obstacles along the way, but through all of them, we have persevered through hard work and unending faith. The first obstacle that my mother faced was my birth. My mother was told she would never be able to have children. The news of her pregnancy was, of course, a shock to her, but she had faith that it would all work out the way it was meant to. A few months before I was born, my mom had a case of pneumonia that she almost did not survive. She was in the intensive care unit of the hospital for weeks and was struggling to breathe. Thankfully, she eventually recovered from her illness, however, the doctors were convinced that I was harmed. Since then, all the expense, responsibility, and stress of raising me has fallen upon my mom. No one in my family, including my father, had ever attended college because of a lack of financial means. My mom wanted to do everything she could to change that with me so she enrolled me in a college-preparatory school. When I entered elementary school, everything changed. My mom was let go from her job and we were in a very bad financial situation. We applied for food stamps and my mom worked little jobs to try to make ends meet. She took money out of her own retirement fund to ensure that I got to stay at my school. Fast forward to today, our financial situation is better but still tight. Thankfully, I was still able to attend my high school. I graduated with a GPA of 4.5 and an ACT score of 32. I ranked 12th in my class and I graduated with an associate's degree due to a dual enrollment program offered at my school. I'm on the president's list at my college and I work a part-time job and volunteer regularly in my community. I have even started my own small business to help make money for college. I currently attend Liberty University and am working towards a Bachelor's degree in recording engineering. This scholarship would help me on my path there. Despite the challenges we've faced, it is my mission to make a positive impact on this world and truly defy all odds.

I am a student with an extremely ambitious heart. I have dreams and goals that I plan to pursue through my education. I believe there is power in having a determined mindset and a motivated heart. I have worked hard throughout high school to be able to attend college. If I am able to attend college, it will truly be against all odds. I was raised by a single mother who is truly the hardest worker I know. She was let go from her career of 25 years when I was eight and that brought very difficult financial times for us. Due to the circumstances my family faced when I was a child, I had to grow up quickly and learn a lot of lessons early. I saw the daily struggle my mother went through and decided at a very young age that I was going to make something out of her efforts by working hard for my future. Since then, we have persevered through it all and I have done everything I can academics-wise to qualify for any scholarships I can to be able to afford college. I am on the president's list at my college, I work a part-time job, and volunteer regularly in my community. It is my dream to attend Liberty University and obtain a bachelor's in music production. Music is my passion. In the future, I want to use my musical abilities to inspire others to change the world around them for the better. My motivation in life is to use my talents for good in this world and to make the most of the opportunities my mom provided for me.

"The distance is nothing when one has a motive." -Pride and Prejudice I was obsessed with Pride and Prejudice in middle school. I actually printed out this quote, laminated it, and pinned it up in my locker every year from seventh grade to senior year. In that way, I can say this quote has physically been with me through it all. I find my odd obsession with the novel to be comedic now, but also very important. The quote I listed has really been with me through everything in a deeper way, it is a reminder of my ambition. It is a reminder that, through every difficult circumstance, any distance can be conquered with perseverance and determination. Whether it is completing high school, facing an illness, or fighting for the causes that I believe in, this quote reminds me that with the proper mindset, I can conquer anything. I believe that there is power in having an ambitious mindset and a motivated heart. My motive is wanting to reach my personal and academic goals and ultimately help make the world around me a better place. With my motivation and perseverance, I intend to face all the "distances" in my life with the full intention of conquering them.

I currently serve as a youth leader for a group of kindergarten-aged students. What I love most about this opportunity is the ability I have to positively impact the lives of the children I mentor. When I enter that room with all those children, I do not neglect the fact that each one of those children comes from a different background. I cannot neglect the fact that the home lives of some of those children could potentially be more difficult than anything I have ever had to face. I cannot neglect the trials that these children face every day that aren't noticeable at first glance. My mission as a person who has an influence over their lives is to create a safe, welcoming, and positive environment for each one of those children. I strive to create whatever foundation I can that will allow each child to achieve every goal they have for their futures. If even one child's life is impacted positively by the work my team and I do, it will all have been worth it.

My favorite book is "A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas. This book is the first of a five-part series that I adore. It is a young-adult fantasy romance novel about a girl that is taken to Prythian, the world of the fae, and learns more about her true purpose. It is an outstanding book for a number of reasons. Firstly, and perhaps most obviously, I adore the plot. There is not a dull spot in the entire book. It is truly a "page-turner" that will keep readers engaged. The second reason I adore this book is the depth of the characters. Sarah J. Maas is known for writing characters that make you become emotionally attached to them in a way. The characters come alive and feel like more than a protagonist or an antagonist. You laugh with them, sympathize with them, and at times, cry over them. The third reason I love this book is the experience of reading it. When I read this book, the rest of the world falls away. Any stress or worries of life that day is forgotten and I fully immerse myself in the world that the book presents to me. I can see the scenes in the book, hear the characters and the different voices I imagine each of them to have, feel the fear the main character faces, and I feel like not only am I reading the story but that I am a part of it. That is the magic of reading. Reading can teach you things, bring you to a new world, and make you feel real emotion. "A Court of Thorns and Roses" is my favorite book because it exhibits the traits of a book that truly makes you feel the magic of reading.
