Bio

My life goals are rooted in service, resilience, and advocacy for children and families affected by trauma and instability. My passion for child welfare and trauma-informed care comes not only from my academic training in social work, but from lived experience. Growing up, I was exposed to an unsafe home environment shaped by substance abuse and frequent conflict between my parents. Witnessing ongoing fighting taught me early what it means to lack safety, consistency, and emotional security during childhood. Today, I face financial hardship while caring for my estranged mother, whose substance use contributed to much of my childhood trauma. Balancing caregiving responsibilities with school and work has strengthened my empathy, perseverance, and understanding of how trauma and poverty affect families across generations. These experiences motivate my commitment to breaking cycles of harm through advocacy and prevention. My determination to build a better life led me to join the United States Navy, which provided structure, stability, and independence while developing my discipline, leadership, and resilience. As a Child Life Volunteer, I have seen how compassionate, developmentally appropriate care can reduce fear and promote healing for children and families. These experiences affirm my goal to pursue a career in child welfare and trauma-informed practice. I am a strong scholarship candidate because I pursue my education with purpose despite financial and personal challenges, and I am committed to using my education to advocate for safer environments and lasting change.

My career of choice is social work, with a focus on child welfare and trauma-informed practice. I am passionate about this field because I understand, both personally and academically, how profoundly a child’s environment shapes their development, sense of safety, and long-term outcomes. I want to work with children and families who have experienced instability, trauma, and systemic barriers, and help create pathways toward healing, stability, and empowerment. My passion for child welfare is rooted in lived experience. Growing up, my home environment was often unsafe due to substance abuse and frequent conflict between my parents. Witnessing repeated fights and emotional instability taught me early what it feels like to live without security or predictability. These experiences shaped my understanding of trauma long before I had the language to name it. They also instilled in me a deep empathy for children who are navigating fear, confusion, and unmet emotional needs. As an adult, I continue to face challenges related to my upbringing. I currently experience financial hardship while caring for my estranged mother, whose substance use contributed to much of my childhood trauma. Balancing caregiving responsibilities alongside school and work has required emotional strength, patience, and resilience. Rather than allowing these challenges to derail my goals, they have reinforced my commitment to breaking cycles of trauma and advocating for families before crises lead to long-term harm. One of the most significant sacrifices I made to achieve my personal and educational goals was joining the United States Navy. My decision to enlist was driven by a desire to create stability, independence, and opportunity for myself. Military service required sacrifice, time away from family, personal comfort, and a sense of normalcy, but it also gave me structure, discipline, and leadership skills that continue to guide me today. The Navy strengthened my sense of responsibility and reinforced my dedication to service, both of which align closely with my goals in social work. In addition to my academic and military experiences, serving as a Child Life Volunteer has further affirmed my career path. Supporting children and families in medical settings through play, emotional reassurance, and developmentally appropriate care has shown me the power of compassion and presence during times of fear and uncertainty, and these moments confirmed my desire to work directly with children and families in trauma-informed, supportive roles. Pursuing higher education while managing financial strain, caregiving responsibilities, and personal healing has required ongoing sacrifice. I have given up comfort, time, and ease to stay focused on my long-term goals. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to academic excellence and service-driven leadership. I view my education not only as a personal achievement but as a tool to create safer environments and stronger systems of support for vulnerable children and families. My passion for social work comes from resilience, lived experience, and a deep belief that every child deserves safety, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.
