Jorian Kuran Harris (Shugg) Helping Heart Foundation Scholarship
I come from a low income farming family of 6 so every penny counts. If I got this scholarship that is less I would have to take out in loans meaning after college I could start contributing back to the farm much sooner. My goal is to go to college for Agriculture business management, Accounting, and Finance, Banking and Investments and receive a Master’s degree. With my degree I can help my family farm make smarter financial decisions and many other businesses and individuals. When I was seven years old my father died. My mom was pregnant with my baby sister and my little four year old brother was asking “where is daddy?” I cried at school constantly and had nightmares about my dad passing away every night. Even though I was only seven I knew that I would need to help out more. I helped mom when she would cry, because what she needed was someone to be there for her. If she is there for everyone else, who is left to be there for her? Somewhere between my 8th grade and my freshman year I developed an eating disorder, because of the constant stress and bullying I received from my classmates simply for being bisexual. As if things weren’t bad enough, I started experiencing extreme anxiety attacks during school, became more depressed than I was after my dad passed away and my ADHD became almost unmanageable. It was at that time I wasn’t able to hide anything from my mom anymore and she got me the help I needed. Onward to junior year money was tight and the school was trying to force my mom to send the kids to the After School Program. Five dollars a day, five days a week, four weeks a month. That’s an extra hundred dollars a month that we couldn’t afford. As I’m stressing about money and where to take the kids after school I’m being made fun of behind my back and to my face by my teammates for having the kids with me. Eventually, the bullying was happening during classes too and continued to escalate to sexual harassment. Throughout my life I have thought of ending my life because of all the responsibilities I hold and events that I’ve been through. The reason that I am still alive is my family. They needed me like how I needed my mom to see me struggling and how my mom needed someone to lean on, so I decided to be my family’s someone. The someone that kept things from falling apart due to the slightest inconvenience.
