I'm Emanuel Fuentes Padilla, a Hispanic first-generation college student. I currently attend Albion College out of state, working towards a Bachelor's in Biology. My long-term goal is to get a Masters's Degree and become a Physician Assistant. There are multiple reasons why I chose the medical field, but it all boils down to how I grew up. I come from a low-income family. After my father passed away when I was only four years old, I had to pick a lot of responsibilities in the household. My mother excessively worked. Though she tried her best to provide for my family, raising five children was heavy work. I tried my best to help my mother by caring for my siblings and myself. I kept myself out of trouble and saw academic excellence as a necessity. Over time, I could see my mother's stress damaging her health. She developed hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and migraines, but she couldn't afford medical insurance. Therefore, I made it a priority to heed her well-being. I researched the best ways to keep her healthy, and I eventually grew a passion for medicine. I knew I wanted to help people, but it wasnt till I rushed to the emergency room that I was sure what I wanted to be. My mother was in a threatening condition. She developed a renal infection and was in agony. Looking at her in the hospital bed, was an unbearable feeling, and I wanted to help her. I communicated with the physician, telling him about my mother's symptoms, medications she was receiving, and previous conditions. I saw medical professionals work with one another, which was truly inspirational. Thankfully my mother recovered, and I appreciate the medical workforce. Finally, I plan to use my education to help people worldwide get the medical help they need. I want to set an example for all of my Hispanic people. Give hope to the first-generation students that success is possible. And to all low-income individuals, we should prevail and not let excuses stop us from achieving our goals. I'm prepared to implement a diverse skill set, technical proficiencies, and new perspectives to leadership personnel. And most of all, I want to give the same relief I got when medical professionals informed me that my mother would be fine. Because I know there is no better feeling than to help save a life.
