My name is Elon Barbee, and I am currently a senior biology major at North Carolina A&T State University. I am passionate about pediatric clinical research and aspire to make significant contributions to the health and well-being of children through my work. This scholarship is crucial for me as I pay for my education out of pocket with the help of my parents, and I also take out loans to cover the costs. Growing up, I was deeply inspired by my family’s commitment to healthcare and their achievements in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). My mother, a dedicated dentist, attended an HBCU, instilling in me the values of perseverance and excellence from a young age. Additionally, my grandfather, a pioneering black pediatrician, set an example of what it means to serve the community with compassion and expertise. Continuing this legacy at an HBCU has always been a dream of mine, and North Carolina A&T has provided the perfect environment to nurture my aspirations. During my time at North Carolina A&T, I have immersed myself in the field of biology, particularly focusing on research and laboratory work. Currently, I am interning at Regeneron, working with genes, proteins, and cells in the oncology department. This experience has been invaluable, providing me with hands-on research skills and a deeper understanding of cellular mechanisms and disease processes. In addition to my academic and research pursuits, I am actively involved in community service. I volunteer at Red Cross donation centers and donate to women’s shelters. Through the Student Health Center (SHC), I organize events that promote a healthy lifestyle for college students, focusing on all areas of health. Each holiday season, my mom and I give away baskets to the less fortunate, a tradition that we hold dear. This year, I will also be volunteering at local schools to help kids with literacy and reading, alongside my continued work with the Red Cross. My future plans include continuing my education and training in pediatric clinical research, with the goal of improving healthcare outcomes for children. This scholarship will greatly alleviate the financial burden of my education and allow me to focus more on my studies and community service efforts. It will enable me to continue my journey towards becoming a dedicated professional in pediatric clinical research, carrying forward the legacy of my family and the values of North Carolina A&T State University. Thank you for considering my application.
