I intentionally make choices in my daily life to live sustainably and minimize my carbon footprint. In addition to thrifting and promoting a vegan lifestyle, I've taken several other intentional steps to further my commitment to environmental sustainability. It's important to note that my father's disability has also impacted my choices, as it has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and compassion for the world around me.
One significant choice I make to support sustainability is actively supporting local businesses by shopping locally whenever possible. This practice not only strengthens our local economy but also reduces the environmental impact associated with long-distance transportation and the carbon emissions that result from it. By choosing local products and services, I not only contribute to the well-being of my community but also lessen the strain on the environment, which is a critical aspect of my sustainable living philosophy.
My father's disability has played a profound role in shaping my sustainable choices. Witnessing his daily challenges has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and compassion. I believe that sustainability should extend beyond environmental concerns; it should also encompass inclusivity and empathy. The experience of caring for a family member with a disability has deepened my empathy for individuals facing challenges. It has made me more aware of the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in our society. It's not just about reducing our environmental impact but also ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can lead a fulfilling and sustainable life.
Staying informed about environmental issues is another crucial aspect of my sustainable lifestyle. This awareness is essential for making informed choices and advocating for positive change. I believe that being well-informed allows me to be a more effective advocate for environmental sustainability and empowers me to engage in meaningful discussions about the pressing challenges our planet faces. It also helps me stay up to date with the latest developments and innovative solutions in the field of environmental conservation.
Furthermore, I had the opportunity to participate in an internship with Biodiversity Builders, an education program designed to inspire and empower youth to be Earth Stewards and make an ecological impact in their immediate communities. During this internship, I worked collaboratively with like-minded individuals to improve local ecosystems by creating native plant gardens, removing invasive plants, selling native plants, and advocating for nature-based solutions to address biodiversity loss, climate change, and environmental injustice. This experience not only provided me with valuable hands-on experience but also reinforced my commitment to sustainability and deepened my understanding of the practical steps needed to protect our planet.
Reducing my carbon footprint is crucial because it is a tangible way to live in alignment with my values and make a positive impact on the environment. It is vital for the well-being of future generations and the countless species that share our planet. By making sustainable choices in various aspects of my life, from thrifting and home gardening to supporting local businesses and actively participating in initiatives like Biodiversity Builders, I actively contribute to a more ethical, sustainable, and empathetic world. Reducing our carbon footprint is a positive outcome of these intentional choices, reflecting my unwavering commitment to my life goals and values, influenced not only by my personal values but also by the circumstances and challenges my family has faced, including my father's disability.
Vegan Teens Are The Future Scholarship
My journey into veganism began at the tender age of twelve, a decision that elicited shock and disbelief from my cheese-loving, dairy-centric family—the Murphys, whose heritage is deeply intertwined with dairy farming from County Mayo, Ireland. Their skepticism was unsurprising, given our strong familial ties to the dairy industry. However, my visit to a dairy farm had a profound impact, solidifying my commitment to veganism.
Since that pivotal visit, my dietary choices have become a testament to my unwavering dedication to animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and personal health. I made a conscious choice to abstain from all animal products, as a form of protest against the cruelty inherent in animal agriculture.
The initial transition to veganism was met with an influx of unsolicited advice and concern from well-meaning family and friends. Rejecting cherished traditions like enjoying Irish soda bread with Kerrygold butter was a challenge, particularly at my grandmother's house. Politely declining a lamb chop or cream-laden Irish breakfast tea became part of my daily routine. Yet, over time, I developed the skills to articulate the reasons behind my choices.
The Murphy family, while initially resistant, gradually came to respect my decision. As time passed, the questions and quizzical looks diminished, and an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance began to take root.
My unwavering commitment to a vegan lifestyle has deeply influenced my choice of college. It brings me immense satisfaction to share that my top college choice wholeheartedly embraces and values veganism. During a visit to their campus, I had the privilege of experiencing the remarkable vegan offerings available in their cafeteria, which not only encompassed a delightful variety but also featured ingredients cultivated on their very own student-run farm. This firsthand encounter reinforced my belief that this institution is the perfect environment for nurturing my vegan principles.
Looking ahead, my aspirations and plans are intrinsically linked to the promotion and expansion of the vegan movement. I am resolute in my determination to harness the education and experiences I gain during my college journey to advocate for, educate about, and spread awareness of the profound ethical, environmental, and health benefits of a vegan lifestyle. Through active collaboration with organizations, communities, and educational institutions, I aspire to become a catalyst for positive change, compelling others to make informed and compassionate dietary choices. My ultimate objective is to inspire and empower individuals to embrace a vegan way of life, fostering a more compassionate and sustainable world in the process.
This college, which places a high value on veganism, provides the ideal platform for me to embark on this transformative journey. It is my sincere hope that as I pursue my education and continue along life's path, I will have the opportunity to drive forward a paradigm shift toward a more compassionate and harmonious world, one where vegan values are embraced and upheld.
Thank you for your support!
