Matthew E. Minor Memorial Scholarship
My name is Ella Mickinzee Wilcox, and I am a senior at Decatur High School in Texas. Throughout my high school years, I have maintained a GPA above 3.0 while actively participating in various community service activities. I am passionate about creating a safer environment for children and youth, both online and in person, and I believe that preventing bullying is essential for helping young people thrive.
In my community, I volunteer regularly at the local library’s after-school program, where I mentor younger students and promote kindness and respect. I have also helped organize awareness campaigns at my school about the dangers of bullying and the importance of empathy. These efforts aim to foster a positive environment where every student feels safe and supported. I have witnessed how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life.
Financially, my family faces challenges as we prepare for my transition to college. My mother works hard to support us, but the costs of tuition, books, and living expenses are daunting. This scholarship would relieve some of that burden and allow me to focus more on my studies and community involvement without constant financial stress. The scholarship would change my life and help me achieve my goals, without stressing my mom out about money.
To prevent bullying in my school and online, I lead by example by standing up against bullying behaviors whenever I see them. I encourage peers to report bullying incidents and have worked with teachers to create anonymous reporting systems to help students feel safe in speaking out. I also educate younger students about internet safety, explaining the importance of respecting others online and being cautious about what they share on social media. Cyberbullying can be just as harmful as in-person bullying, and I believe that raising awareness is key to prevention.
Moreover, I participate in school clubs focused on mental health and well-being, which promote supportive conversations around self-esteem and resilience. These groups help create a community where students feel connected and empowered to seek help if they are struggling.
In conclusion, I am committed to continuing my efforts to combat bullying and to make my community a safer place for all young people. This scholarship would not only ease my financial challenges but also support my goal of fostering kindness, respect, and safety both online and offline. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply and hopeful to contribute positively to the mission of the Matthew E. Minor Awareness Foundation.
Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
My name is Ella Wilcox, and I am currently a senior at Decatur High School in Texas. I have always believed that ambition, hard work, and giving back to the community are the keys to success, values I share with Kalia D. Davis and her inspiring legacy. Like Kalia, I am passionate about excelling both academically and in athletics, while also making a positive impact on those around me.
Throughout high school, I have maintained a GPA above 3.0 while balancing my involvement in sports, including track and cross country, which have taught me discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Competing in these sports has pushed me to improve every day and to face challenges head-on—qualities that I carry into all areas of my life. Being part of a team has also helped me develop strong leadership skills and a supportive spirit, encouraging my teammates to reach their full potential.
Outside of athletics, I am deeply committed to serving my community. I regularly volunteer at the local food pantry and participate in neighborhood clean-up projects. Additionally, I tutor younger students in math and reading, helping them build confidence and improve academically. These experiences have shown me the importance of giving back and how small acts of service can create meaningful change.
This scholarship would provide essential financial support to help me pursue my goal of attending college without placing a heavy burden on my family. It would allow me to focus more on my studies, sports, and community involvement without the constant worry of how to cover tuition, books, and other expenses. More importantly, receiving this scholarship would honor the memory of Kalia D. Davis by encouraging me to live out the values she embodied—ambition, kindness, and dedication.
In the future, I hope to continue Kalia’s legacy by using my education and experiences to make a difference in my community and beyond. I admire Kalia's determination and find it very inspiring. I am driven to excel in college and later pursue a career that allows me to serve others, possibly through education or community development. This scholarship would be a vital step toward achieving those dreams.
In conclusion, I believe that my commitment to academic excellence, athletics, and community service reflect the spirit of this scholarship. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply and hopeful that with this support, I can continue to grow and make a positive impact, just as Kalia did in her life.
