My favorite anime show is currently Demon Slayer. I am captivated by the storyline and intrigued waiting for each episode. The animation quality is impeccable and ties together with the sound track in a beautiful way that captivates their audience due to the meticulous design. The storyline of Demon Slayer keeps me going back to rewatch as if it is the first time again. One of the main reasons I enjoy Demon Slayer so much is the character development and the impact of relationships within the show. I resonate with the idea of love and loss within the show that all started when Tanjiro began his quest for vengeance for his family but along the way he learned strength, reflection and how to process his grief. During these missions Tanjiro is brave and determined despite any barriers that he faces. He is willing to battle demons that are more powerful all while remaining calm and strategic in order to persevere. I think that this idea is vastly important as in a persons lifetime there will be a form of grief that needs to be processed and resilience is a key factor. Demon Slayer is able to forge a connection between the characters and the audience that draw out many emotions as you follow their journey.

I have chosen nursing as my career path due to their unrelenting drive to provide the highest care for their patients. In highschool I applied for a once in a lifetime chance to join Northbay Nurses Camp, during this time highschool students were given the opportunity to see what it is like day to day being a nurse. Students were able to partner with a mentor and go further into the many aspects in nursing which inspired me further to become an advocate for the sick, a caregiver to those who may not be able to help themselves at this time, and an ear to listen to someone on their worst day. Nurses show empathy and guidance without judgment and ensure that even in a fast paced environment, the patient feels important. I was drawn to nursing as I felt that my skill set matched many of the mentors at nursing camp. Some would say the medical field is a scary place or an unforgiving field, but I see its beauty in how it grows and changes daily. This growth and change is fueled by constant studies that crave to know more and to better the current systems that are in place. The medical field is a constant learning circle that feeds off one another and allows for the unknown to become known, for the betterment of the people. I hope to use my studies to further research and initiate change in the medical field. I want to provide information on healthy living without people feeling like the information is daunting or too far out of reach from their grasp. I remember when I was younger we would be in and out of the hospitals due to my brother’s heart condition. At around 10 years old, still a child but old enough to understand some, when my brother went into the hospital yet again, I felt surrounded but also alone, I felt as though the room was spinning and no one knew how to help him, that was until one particular nurse came up to me and asked my name. After minor chatting, the nurse explained that all the commotion was actually attempting to control my brother's heart rate, so that he would feel better. I remember her pointing at each line coming from his arm and explaining what each did. Although I was not this nurse's patient directly she took the time to ensure I was also okay, without inhibiting care for my brother. I want to become a nurse as I was inspired by this nurse to ensure families as a whole are taken care of on what could be their worst day. I want to have an impact in a child’s life that shows them how great the medical field is, as what was done for me. I plan to use my nursing career to continue or create more programs such as Northbay’s Nursing Camp. I want to help young children find their love in the medical field, whether it be nursing, emergency technicians, pharmacologists, or even doctors. I want to help grow the medical field and ensure people are not scared of using the resources the medical field has.

To me nursing means to build a community that seeks the best for patients. Creating an environment for healing and learning in order to build up the community. Nurses work within teams and alone to provide excellent care and ensure a positive experience to those who could be having the worst day of their life. They are the comfort to those who have had a traumatic experience and create an environment for healing. Within nursing you can see the openness and eagerness to learn, excel and spread the attributes such as humility, advocacy, competency, and compassion. Nursing is to show empathy and actively listen to a patient to hear what matters most to the patient, and act on the information provided. Nursing strives for equity among patients to ensure positive outcomes. By using quality improvement nurses observe current problems and begin to implement solutions that will benefit many different diverse groups. Although nursing can be implemented in a multitude of different forms at the core they all relate back to what matters most to the patient, what provides the patient with the best outcome, and reflection on what can I learn from this to do even better for the next patient. Being trustworthy is a vital aspect of nursing as it can lead to increased information that will only benefit the patient and their care plan. Nursing is a welcoming field that creates a group of individuals who want to do better, and increase positive outcomes in the health care setting. Being a nurse is a privilege that I am excited to take part in. At a young age I knew that caregiving was my calling, from helping my brothers get ready for school, to helping someone in class with a task they did not understand yet. I found inspiration with sharing and gaining knowledge through a warm, welcoming and powerful community that wants to cultivate success. I hope to use my education to grow as a person and be able to comfort those around me in their darkest days as a nurse, while teaching healthy life-styles within my community, as those before me have for my family. My brother was born with a heart condition that had us with frequent visits in hospitals all throughout my childhood. Starting then I learned how nursing can affect a family and a patient's outcome based on the passion that nurse brings. It can create a whole different scenario. I will never forget the nurse who first inspired me, she was compassionate, calm yet assertive, and trustworthy. This nurse was the one who advocated for my brother and my family when no one believed that he was in critical condition. Not only did she advocate for us, she listened to the story as a whole, saving my brother. I strive to be like this nurse in every way as she was everything we are currently being taught in the nursing program. I want to be able to adapt, learn and grow within this program to become not only a competent nurse but a trusted healthcare worker who advocates for their patients as if they were my family.
    Learner Math Lover Scholarship
As I am pursuing a degree in nursing I have come to form a strong appreciation for math, however even as a child math and science were my favorite subjects in school. I have always loved learning and having a challenge that makes me think. I remember first learning geometry and being fascinated and eager to concur this new theory. Nursing has a need for precision especially when taking vital signs or calculating dosages for a patient, it is imperative that the math is correct and accurate for the effects to be a satisfactory and beneficial care plan. Nurses understand that a single miscalculation can have profound implications for patient safety, underscoring the importance of their math proficiency in ensuring the correct delivery of treatments that promote healing and recovery. Math encourages thinking and problem solving which is used in nursing during evidence based practice and clinical judgement. Math is also used as a professional skill tool to collect data in the medical field so that methods can be updated and made better. Math is an indispensable tool used within nursing that drives a positive change for the patients and upholds an environment of safety which is why I love math.
William Griggs Memorial Scholarship for Science and Math
Along with the crucial aspect of math and science within the nursing field I have found inspiration in teaching others healthy habits or even just sharing information about the medical field. This love for gaining and sharing knowledge stems from childhood as my family was frequently in the hospital due to my brother's heart condition. As a child I remember feeling confused, like the world was spinning rapidly around me, everyone would be talking but I never knew what was said. One night after another rushed visit to the ER, the nurse walking out of my brother's room stopped and looked at me. I remember her kindness, empathy and calming tone explaining to me what was happening. This nurse had inspired me, I was amazed at how she not only took care of my brother but my entire family. This nurse was able to explain in a way that was scientific but at my age level and I then knew the medical field is where I wanted to be. I want to use scientific knowledge to assist other families in what could be the worst day of their lives and be a support system for them. I plan to use my nursing degree to advocate for those who are unable to advocate for themselves. Although I knew I wanted to be in the medical field from a young age it was not until highschool that I realized fast paced or emergency care was my passion. During highschool I took a chance on a medical science course. It was during this course that I realized my passion was caring for others while being able to adapt quickly to find results that worked. The studies from my medical science course opened the door to human anatomy and the multitude of ways we can fix problems found within the body, whether it be medication, surgery, or simple first aid. Medical science opened opportunities to learn and taught me that every day can be a new learning if you properly invest your time and passion. When exiting highschool I wanted to utilize the knowledge of anatomy and applied sciences which led me to take a course on Emergency Medicine. I followed this path into being an emergency medical technician which taught me how to be swift yet calm and efficient in critical situations. I was able to utilize rapid assessment skills and forge solutions to non-typical questions in order to have the best outcome for my patients. I planned to utilize these skills to become a nurse and am currently in the nursing program. Nursing is often regarded as a profession driven by compassion and caregiving, relies fundamentally on the principles of science and mathematics to deliver effective and safe patient care. Nurses apply principles from disciplines such as biology, physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy to assess, diagnose, and treat patients effectively. Scientific research is the backbone of evidence-based practice, guiding nurses to implement interventions proven effective through rigorous study and statistical analysis. Science can empower nurses by evolving the systems in place which is one of the many reasons I have found my passion in nursing. Mathematical principles inform various aspects of patient monitoring and assessment. Nurses analyze vital signs, interpret laboratory results, and monitor trends over time using statistical methods to detect deviations from baseline health status. This data-driven approach enables early detection of complications, prompt intervention, and proactive management of patient care, thereby optimizing outcomes and promoting recovery. Being able to have early detection benefits the patient's outcome which is extremely important within the nursing field.

Growing up, my mom was always present, active and loving and one day it all changed. I remember at the start of 6th grade my mom and dad were having a conversation outside like usual at drop off and I thought nothing of it. Little did I know my dad had found out about the multitude of parties being thrown with illicit substances around and in use while my brothers and I were in the house. Each week I would notice my mom becoming less and less involved in our daily routines, or even being present at all. Days would go by before she emerged from her room, only to scream about how the house was not yet cleaned. Party after party of random people in and out messes left behind for me to clean. I did not understand what was happening, it was like a flip had switched and my mom was gone. Years of this on and off moments would go by and it just got worse each day. My dad was trying to get my mom help for substance abuse and mental illness in the background but she refused. Her disease left me confused and scared, wondering what had happened, why it happened, and how it all changed so fast. I may never know the answer to this but this is what drove me to become a nurse. I hope to help individuals suffering from mental illness or their families to understand how to address mental illness. I believe that it is important for those who are suffering from mental illness to know that they do have support and that mental illness is not something that is shameful. My mother’s mental illness left us to become independent of her rather quickly, however, my brother was not old enough to take care of himself. I would ensure that everyone was up and ready for school, food was made and showers were taken. I was determined to not allow him to lose his childhood. I did my best to keep everything flowing smoothly for him. I would babysit after school all while completing the mountains of homework I was given each day. I have not let barriers set me back in life and hope to make an impact in my community in regard to mental health and assisting those with mental health issues. Making sure individuals know they are not alone and have support in their time of need or crisis.

The days she would go away would be due to mania and she thought it was better for her to leave. Thinking that everyone was out to get her and saw her as a problem was a huge factor in her mental illness. Her disease left me confused and scared, wondering what had happened, why did this happen, and how it all changed so fast. I have learned that empathy and not judgment is important because you never know the reason behind someone's mental state.

My dedication to keeping my brother safe and cared for was reward enough to make my day-to-day worth it. I always admired my friends who would go out after class hang out or just go home to relax but I would go home and be the parent for my little brother. I did not let my home life be a barrier to getting good grades even if it was always the loud party house that rarely let me sleep. To this day he does not remember the party house or hard days, he remembers only how I was always there, how he always had food. I was successful in leading my family and being selfless to ensure that his memories of childhood were not cut short. I am proud of the accomplishments I have been able to obtain despite barriers in my younger years.

I am currently working on getting my degree in nursing, however, before this, I have always had the desire to help those around me. Growing up I would go with my grandma and aunt to pass out meals during the holidays to those who were in need. The highlight for me in doing this was seeing the impact that a small thing such as a meal and conversation had on the individual. I did not care for the "thank yous" as much as I cared to interact with the individual and hear their story. I wanted to do more, hear more, and show them that even in darkness there is a light. During high school, I participated in food drives, toy drives and other communal activities that brought families together. After high school, I became a part of the medical field as a first responder and started working with the American Red Cross. I utilize the skill set from being a first responder in order to remain calm, efficient and empathetic during a crisis. I saw from the American Red Cross that this was a community that wanted to give back and would go across the nation when people were in need. While working on my nursing degree, I plan to participate in blood drives and utilize the skills I am learning to benefit my community. My goal is to open a clinic to help those with lower income or no income have a safe space to get information, preventative care, or treatment without feeling like they are being judged or looked down upon. My goal is to build up our community and bring back the care and compassion that once drove our small town. I am passionate and driven in my goals and the excitement of planning drives me to succeed.

I want to become a nurse as I was inspired by this nurse to ensure families as a whole are taken care of on what could be their worst day. I want to have an impact in a child’s life that shows them how great the medical field is, as what was done for me.

My primary goal for going to school is so that I can use my knowledge to make a positive impact in my community. At a young age I knew that caregiving was my calling, from helping my brothers get ready for school, to helping someone in class with a task they did not understand yet. I found inspiration with sharing and gaining knowledge through a warm, welcoming and powerful community that wants to cultivate success. I hope to use my education to grow as a person and be able to comfort those around me in their darkest days, as a nurse while teaching healthy life-styles within my community, as those before me have for my family. With my brother having a heart condition since birth, the medical field, specifically nurses, had a huge impact on how my family was able to adapt to changes and was provided with the best care. The nurses not only paid attention to my brother, but also my father and myself to ensure we were not scared during any process of his treatment. Some would say the medical field is a scary place or an unforgiving field, but I see its beauty in how it grows and changes daily. This growth and change is fueled by constant studies that crave to know more and to better the current systems that are in place. I hope to spark hope in my peers or even future colleges to be able to increase the want of these changes, in order to see high impact changes within my community. This can be brought on in many forms whether it be one person at a time, one group at a time or even one city at a time. I plan to use my communication skills to intertwine empathy and learning in order to advocate for those who I provide care for, and their family members. With knowledge we gain power and will power we are able to change what is broken and to allow for new systems and new growth to be formed. I appreciate the opportunity to utilize this scholarship in order to initiate growth within my academic career.

My brother having a heart condition since birth has also had a significant impact on my life and my desire to work as a nurse. After my brother’s first surgery the excitement we felt when he ran his first homerun in baseball. I was so proud he was able to finally play the one sport he admired the most, then drop. He laid on home plate and we knew something was wrong. The paramedics that came that day ensured my brother was comfortable and I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, my brother is so strong.” In that moment he showed no fear and was not the slightest bit sad. He showed me how to persevere, how to show grace even when something in life was not going the way you wanted. Although he had medication after medication, multiple surgeries and other hardships due to his condition, he never let that impact the way he treated others. My brother did not let his diagnosis stop him from attempting anything. He did not see his diagnosis as something that held him back, but as an extra step he needed to account for. Since birth my brother has had a heart condition, due to this we were in and out of the hospitals, waiting in line for medications multiple days each week. While growing up this was our normal, I didn’t realize that not all people can’t run for more than 5 minutes without needing to lay flat on the group. We were always told to be careful by our mom and dad, but be extra careful when playing tag or dodgeball with the kids from down the road. I knew if my brother laid on the floor or looked at me with our “go get mom” face, I immediately stopped and ran to get the closest adult, and then mom of course. I remember after my brother’s first surgery the excitement we felt when he ran his first homerun in baseball. He showed me how to persevere, how to show elegance and grace even when something in life was not going the way you wanted it to. Although he had medication after medication, multiple surgeries and other hardships due to his condition, he never let that impact the way he treated others. My brother did not let his diagnosis stop him from attempting anything, even if it was only once. He did not see his diagnosis as something that held him back, but as an extra step he needed to account for prior to activities. After this game we thought my brother may not be able to play baseball anymore but we all came together as a family to make a plan on what to do if he were to have any issues on the field. Each member was at a certain area of the field to be able to communicate with my brother at any point in the game, myself included. Although my brother’s diagnosis was not for me directly, I believe that this helped me find my passion as a caregiver. If it were not for my brother's attitude and extra attention, I may have never known my love for caring for others. I believe that the impacts of his chronic condition helped me to become the person I am today, by being understanding, patient and empathetic.

Currently I am a Junior at American River College, and enrolled in the registered nursing program for fall of 2023. I am interested in the career of nursing due to growing up with my brother having a heart condition. When growing up I was greatly impacted by the care team my brother had as they were always comforting at a time when I was scared or confused. They reassured me that my brother's condition would not prevent him from being the funny, goofy, active kid that he always was. They provided guidance, and empathy at our times of need and I hope to be able to do the same as a nurse for what could be someone's worst day. Although I knew I wanted to be in the medical field from a young age it was not until highschool that I realized fast paced or emergency care was for me. During highschool I took a chance on a course called medical science. It was during this course that I realized my passion was caring for others while being able to adapt quickly in order to find results that worked. The studies from my medical science course opened the door to human anatomy and the multitude of ways we can fix problems found within the body, whether it be medication, surgery, or simple first aid. Medical science opened opportunities to learn and taught me that every day can be a new learning as long as you properly invest your time and passion. The idea of seeing others in pain scared me at first, however during my studies I was taught that if you are able to comfort someone on what could be their worst day it is making a small difference in their world. I was shown gratitude, empathy and grace when handling situations that without the proper guidance can cause pain, discomfort, embarrassment or even death. When I am a nurse I would like to work in the emergency department or pediatric unit. I am interested in a fast, yet proficient environment that strives to find solutions. Working as an emergency medical technician prepared me for nursing school as it is hands-on learning. Through my experiences as an EMT, I have learned to listen to what I am being told thoroughly and use it to gather vital information that can help treatment. I hope to continue growing my knowledge, and I thank you for considering me for the Kelly O. Memorial Scholarship.

To me Disney is a place where everyone is accepting and wanting to experience happiness. I first went to disney with my grandma and mom before my mom was overcome by mental illness, for this alone Disney holds a special place in my heart. When I think of Disney I think of joy, my favorite ride is Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission Breakout. I seek the thrills of the drop while still being able to enjoy a story that is being told. The Guardians ride also reminds me to root for the underdog, which I have always been inclined to do through my own life's hardships. Disney reminds me that beauty can be found in many different ways, maybe just a perspective change will help. Recently myself and my grandma have gotten into pin trading. The pin trading community welcome’s newcomers with open arms and helps spread knowledge and love for disney with each trade. My first pin experience was when a woman standing in line saw one of my many pins in my bag and we told stories on each pin that we both had on hand. I had mentioned in passing that my favorite Disney princess was Aurora and I have not been lucky enough to find many pins that featured her. At this statement a total stranger in line leaped into her bag and pulled out a stand alone Aurora pin stating that she would love to do a trade for the pin. Excitement grew as we waited for the attraction and I was able to make my first pin trade. Unbeknownst to me pin trading was on popular demand in the park. The rest of the wait the once stranger had filled me in on what pin trading was, why she began pin trading, and some “top secret hints on where to find the best trades” as she would say. The excitement of being able to trade with a child or even adult and see the sparkle of happiness overcome them is what initially drew me in to trade pins. I remember as a child with my mom always looking at the pins and thinking that it was the best thing I have seen each time. Now as I am older I look at the pins and see a story, emotion and love being able to spread my own love for disney through the magic of pin trading. Disney is a place to feel at home, even when away from home. I am thankful that I am able to share the magic that Disney spreads.
