I want to attend college and major in developmental psychology to learn why some people experience developmental delays and abnormalities and how this can affect human growth and developmental changes across one’s lifetime. I want to pursue a research-based career focused on developmental psychology. I want to work in a university or institution where I can contribute to conducting research to help doctors and people of all ages understand developmental delays from a psychological standpoint and successfully accomplish my goals. I plan to research ways to help people reach their full potential, specifically those with developmental and psychological delays. I am interested in researching why people act a certain way when they have certain psychological impairments.
I would say that my disability, cerebral palsy, plays a role in my desire to dig deeper into developmental abnormalities. Aside from my curiosity about psychological and developmental abnormalities, my disability has mainly served as my driving force to go to college and pursue a career to prove to myself and others that I will not allow my disability to keep me from achieving my goals for the future. In addition, I would like to live independently in a place of my own, so finding a job after college is important to me. Having cerebral palsy does limit me physically to a certain extent. However, I plan to hire a personal caretaker to help me complete basic everyday activities and necessities to reach my hopes of living independently. Additionally, I would love to adopt a cat and care for it because I really enjoy their company. Having a successful career will help me achieve my hopes for my future and live the life I would like to live.
From a young age, I have worked hard to maintain the best grades possible because I knew I wanted to obtain a successful career. I am and have always lived in a single parent household with my mother and sister. Our current financial situation is difficult and even though my mother has limited finances, she manages to fully support and provide for me through her employment as caregiver to my grandparents and myself. My father has rarely been present in my life and does not provide child support. As a student from a low income household, this scholarship will serve as a huge step forward to help me pay for college to pursue my education and dream career in research psychology. I am very determined to attend a rigorous university close to my home in California. My mom is willing to transport me to and from a nearby school of my choice and will be my number one supporter throughout my education journey. I know that my strong work ethic and continuous drive to strive for excellence will be beneficial to me in my academic success. Furthermore, I not only want to succeed for myself but also inspire others with physical disabilities like mine and others to do the same. I hope to discover meaningful contributions to the world of psychology and help find answers to unknown questions pertaining to psychology.
