Bio

Hi prospective judges! My name is Elizabeth, I'm 17, and a senior from NYC. I've always aspired to work with children and in psychology, but as of recent years I am dedicated to pursuing a career in pediatrics. I hope to one day open my own practice where I can incorporate psychology into the way I practice medicine. I've always been very passionate about advocating for mental health, as I've observed that many people including myself have grown up in homes that don't value mental health which leaves many people unaware of the subject. I'm a perfect candidate for the scholarships I am applying to because of my work ethic and passion for my future goals. Regardless of my goals I like to keep my self well rounded by emerging myself in other areas of study and participating in new activities( for example I've been apart of my schools law team and law program since I was 14 and am also a varsity athlete in a sport I knew nothing about until my sophomore year.) A scholarship granted to me would not be wasted, I'd be able to go through school without the stress of whether or not I could actually afford pursuing my dreams. Thank you for reading!!

Growing up in a West Indian house hold comes with certain ideals and expectations pushed on to me from a very young age. Although there were expectations for me to do nothing but excell academically in order to be successful, I always knew that wasn't the case. I have had to work hard to teach myself that I should be working for me, my desires, and what makes me happy; although I still find myself struggling to accept this for myself. I knew from day one that I wanted to work with children and still to this day want to work with children. I know from my own journeys to grow and stray away from the ideologies I've been raised on and the trauma I've experienced that it can be very hard growing up in our world not having someone who understands you or your pain. I have already learned how to be advocate for children and patient that I may have in pediatrics through my work in activism over the last year and a half. Scholarships like this one will allow me to pursue higher education which will allow me to truly reach my full potential and have an impact on society and future generation to come. I want to practice medicine in a new way by incorporating the psychology perspective, doing this with children will benefit them in years to come and generations after them. Higher education will allow for me to impact the lives of many people who can take what they get from me through life. I'm currently a junior in Fort Hamilton High School, meaning I have only had one and half years of real high school experience and one and half year remotely. Despite the circumstances I have immerse myself in to many different activities to find my interests and hone my best skills. I've been a member of student government and leadership since my sophomore year of high school. On student government I was able to advocate for the mental health of my peers and for policy change on sexual harassment in my school. This led to me founding to clubs remotely both partnered with other organizations: The Bring Change 2 Mind Mental Health Club and Catcalls of FHHS. All of these activities as well as my involvement as the girls varsity lacrosse teams goalie have pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to put my leadership skills and grow as a leader. I do support many causes and social issues, but I have always had the biggest spot in my heart for mental health. I initially wanted to be a child psychologist when I was eight until about freshman year when I realized my ease with stem subjects and ultimately decided pursuing high education to become a doctor was now more fitted for me. But that interest sparked when I was a child carried over and has allowed me to seek opposition to further educate myself about mental health and allowed me to become a better advocate. I have also been able to become an educator. I have a club under the bring change 2 mind organizin where I have empowered and educated 50 students and the entirety of my schools staff over the last 4 months on the importance of mental health and how importance it is in school settings especially post covid. Higher education will allow me to learn more than just textbook information it'll give me opportunities, experiences, let me continue helping and educating others, make a long lasting and widespread impact on the younger generations.
