Bio

My parents have always tried to instill one thing into my heart: compassion. And not only did they try to instill it, but they succeeded. Compassion permeates every part of my life, from how I spend my time to my future goals. I love to volunteer, dedicating my time to groups that support people, especially people in desperate need for what should be a basic human right: fresh food and clean water. I also choose to spend my summers on mission trips, traveling the world to do what little I can to try and touch the lives of those in need. These mission trips, and the things I have seen on them, have led to a desire to do mission work for the rest of my life, specifically by becoming a dentist who lives in South America, pulling teeth and helping improve the lives of those who cannot afford dental care. In my free time, I enjoy taking care of my blossoming herb and vegetable garden. I also enjoy walking dogs, learning to throw knives and hatchets with my brother, playing spikeball, and completing puzzles with my family. I also enjoy cooking and baking. Once a week, I try and make a new bread or dish from a different country, and often end up visiting the local Asian or Hispanic market in search of ingredients I can barely pronounce. I spend many hours a week in the pool as well, whether it is with my high school team or my USA club team. I love working out and the water clears my head like nothing else can. I just realized recently myself that I am asexual, and it has been a learning curve to accept that part of myself in this sex-crazed modern community.

Dr. Anastasia Pre-Dental and Dental Student Scholarship
In the second grade, my entire class was called down to the library to watch a presentation. Initially, I thought it was going to be boring, a waste of my time, but I quickly found myself amazed by what the presenter was saying. The presenter's name was Latte, yes, like the drink, and he was from a village in the African country of Togo. He sat my class down and began to tell us about the mission work that my school had helped provide through that year's earlier fundraiser. He told us about the clean water we had helped buy, the three goats and twenty-five chickens that went to low-income single mothers, the books we had provided to the village's small, one-room school. But most of all, he told us about the dentists that our school had helped pay to fly over to Togo. They had come to the village to teach dental hygiene, perform procedures, and most of all, pull rotting teeth. Latte showed us nasty pictures of brown, decaying teeth in the mouthes of crying children and grimacing adults, and then he showed us pictures of the same mouths and people after the dentists had pulled their teeth. It was like looking at different people - people who could finally be happy now that the pain in their mouth was gone. Ever since then, Latte's story of dentists helping people and improving their mouths has stuck with me. I want to change lives by fixing the teeth of those who can not afford it otherwise, especially in third-world countries. By becoming a dentist, I will have this exact opportunity and will be able to improve the smiles of people world-wide.

The communication barrier made it hard to understand the waifs of children in front of me, but that didn't stop us from having a great time. We sang songs, them teaching me a traditional Nepali rhyme, and I taught them head-shoulders-knees-and-toes. They traced the henna on my right hand, and I helped pull their dusty hair back into a braid. These children were quite literally living in a dump, but they exuded a happiness, a contentness, that I had never seen before. They taught me to embrace my life, to flash a peace sign even when the situation seems hopeless.
