My name is Lizzie, and I'm pursuing an undergrad degree in Biomedical Science because I have been passionate about helping people ever since I was given the opportunity to help at a local Hospital in Rio Hondo Guatemala. It was over the course of several trips serving with kids there that I felt called to be a pediatrician and want to use this training to help children and their families especially in rural and poor areas.

My name is Elizabeth Cox but everyone calls me Lizzie. I'm currently a Junior majoring in Biomedical Science at Liberty University in Lynchburg Virginia. I am passionate about serving others through a career in pediatrics, and would love the opportunity to share my story and my dreams for the future with you.
There are really two major things that have inspired me to become a pediatrician. The first is that my younger brother Will had a stroke in utero, and due to that was born with Cerebral Palsy, specifically right side Hemiplegia. Growing up with a younger sibling who has cerebral palsy has been both a tremendous blessing and tremendous challenge for our family. From a young age I witnessed the unconditional love and perseverance of my parents as well as his amazing healthcare providers. When I was younger I didn’t really understand all the challenges that Will faced and I just understood it from my limited perspective, like how he drooled a lot. As I began to get older I realized why he had to have so much therapy every week, and why I would have to help distract him every night while my Mom and Dad would stretch his really tight muscles on his right side. Being a part of this experience has shown me what a blessing these pediatric Doctors have been to our family through this journey.
The Second is that I have been taking summer trips to rural Zacapa, Guatemala every few years with my Dad since I was in the 4th grade. This is where my passion for serving kids and their families really began. While there I have had the privilege of volunteering in a children’s hospital, as well as a handicapped children’s home. It opened my eyes and my heart to the challenges faced by families especially in these rural areas. I was inspired by the love, strength, compassion and generosity of these families, and the team of Doctors and Nurses that walked next to them in spite of their limited resources.
My Father has been a high school teacher for 25 years and my mother is a part time accountant. They are very frugal and have had to be wise with their finances. They are helping me to pay for undergrad but my younger brother Will is starting college next year and they will be helping both of us. I'm not in danger of not completing my undergrad, it's really about the financial stress on me and my family. So Will and I are applying to every scholarship that we can find as we pursue the dreams that God has given us.
I am drawn to the idea of helping those in need, especially in locations where the needs are so great. Through my future career, I hope to not only treat illnesses, but to also walk beside and encourage families walking through these Health challenges. I am very grateful that you would take the time to consider my application for the this Scholarship. These funds could really help me to continue my journey to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others through the field of medicine.
Thank you for your consideration,

In his profound work Confessions, Augustine asserts, “And men go abroad to admire the heights of mountains, the mighty waves of the sea, the broad tides of rivers, the compass of the ocean, and the circuits of the stars, yet pass over the mystery of themselves without a thought.” This statement captures a timeless truth about the human tendency to prioritize external exploration over internal reflection. Augustine’s words invite us to consider the significance of self-awareness and the neglect of our inner lives in the face of the awe-inspiring world around us. The underlying meaning of this passage challenges us to redirect our gaze inward, arguing that the mystery of the human self is as wondrous as the marvels of the natural world and essential for achieving true understanding and spiritual fulfillment.
One key aspect of Augustine’s statement is its critique of humanity’s fascination with external beauty and grandeur. People have always been captivated by the majesty of nature, seeking out the tallest mountains, vast oceans, and star-filled skies to experience awe and inspiration. These pursuits are not inherently wrong; in fact, they often evoke a sense of the divine and remind us of our place within the greater cosmos. However, Augustine warns that this outward focus risks becoming superficial if it distracts us from exploring the inner depths of our own souls. The wonders of the external world are fleeting, while the soul—with its capacity for thought, emotion, and connection to the divine—is eternal and far more intricate.
Augustine’s emphasis on the “mystery of themselves” suggests that self-awareness is fundamental to human existence. He implies that the soul holds profound truths about our purpose, morality, and relationship with God. To neglect this inner exploration is to overlook the very essence of what makes us human. Augustine’s theological perspective is rooted in the belief that introspection leads to a deeper understanding of God’s presence within us. By turning inward, we uncover the divine image imprinted on our souls and gain insight into our place within creation. This inner journey requires humility and courage, as it often reveals both our flaws and our potential for redemption.
Moreover, Augustine’s words challenge the modern obsession with external achievements and distractions. In a world dominated by technological advancements and constant connectivity, the temptation to seek validation and fulfillment from external sources is stronger than ever. Social media, for instance, encourages us to curate lives that appear extraordinary on the surface while leaving little room for genuine self-reflection. Augustine’s insight remains relevant, reminding us that no amount of external admiration can substitute for the peace and understanding that come from knowing ourselves.
The neglect of self-exploration also has implications for personal growth and relationships. When we fail to examine our inner lives, we may remain unaware of the fears, desires, and biases that shape our actions. This lack of self-awareness can hinder our ability to form authentic connections with others and navigate life’s challenges. Augustine’s call to “pass over the mystery of themselves” without neglect serves as a reminder that introspection is not a solitary act but a necessary step toward becoming more empathetic and compassionate individuals.
Augustine’s perspective aligns with the broader philosophical tradition that values self-knowledge as the foundation of wisdom. Socrates famously declared that “the unexamined life is not worth living,” emphasizing the importance of introspection for achieving a meaningful existence. Similarly, Augustine’s reflection underscores that true understanding requires balancing our appreciation of the external world with a commitment to exploring our inner selves. By doing so, we can cultivate a sense of harmony between our external pursuits and internal values.
In conclusion, Augustine’s statement challenges us to reconsider our priorities and recognize the profound mystery within ourselves. While the natural world offers boundless beauty and inspiration, the human soul is an equally wondrous creation deserving of our attention and reverence. By embracing introspection and self-awareness, we can uncover deeper truths about our purpose, grow as individuals, and strengthen our relationship with the divine. Augustine’s wisdom invites us to embark on this inner journey, reminding us that the most meaningful discoveries often lie within.

I am an avid reader who has loved books for as long as I can remember. My favorite book series is the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. I have reread these books many times and each time I come back to them I am amazed by how much deeper they seem to have become. It's like in the series where Lucy sees the Lion Aslan again and she talks about how much bigger he appears, but he says "I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger." The older we get the more we bring to the books we are reading and the more we can then take from them.
Books have also been a great escape and encouragement during some difficult times in my life. My brother Will had a stroke in-utero, and due to that was born with Cerebral Palsy. Growing up with a younger sibling who has cerebral palsy has been both a tremendous blessing and tremendous challenge for our family. One Easter night, Will began to have seizures that would happen while he was sleeping and would not stop without intense Medical intervention. I was woken up by my brother screaming in tremendous pain, because his seizures caused him to feel like his right side was on fire. I was terrified as the ambulance came. My aunt came to get me while my parents had to rush away with my little brother. I remember being so terrified and praying that night.
Those years were hard for all of us, not knowing when a seizure would strike and then his seizures began to be silent at night, and these were terrifying. Will’s neurologist made clear to my parents how important it was to not let a seizure go on undetected while Will slept, because of the damage it could do. They shielded me from just how dangerous these really were, but there was at least a 2 month period of time where my parents would alternate sleeping with a video monitor next to their bed. I could see the strain and lack of sleep was affecting everyone.
Reading was such a comfort to me during these times. I could grab a good book and just immerse myself in another world through the story. These stories were not just an escape for me , they shaped the type of woman that I wanted to become.
I read lots of biographies of people who made an impact on the world and I realized that I wanted to live a life of impact that made a difference for other people especially children and their families.
What I experienced growing up with Will and reading good books, has reinforced my desire to pursue a career in medicine, with a focus on pediatrics. I believe that every child is valuable, deserving of life and quality healthcare. As a pediatrician I want to serve children going through health challenges.

My mother is my hero and it has been through her amazing example of love for Jesus and love for our family that has lead me to be a BioMed major at Liberty University. My younger brother Will was born with Cerebral Palsy, and my mom has worked tirelessly to care for and support him while also making sure that I'm loved and supported.
Growing up with a sibling who had special needs, I saw firsthand the triumphs and challenges she faced. She would make an hour drive twice a week to UNC Hospital to make sure that Will would get Occupational and Physical therapy he needed. In spite of all these sessions and so many Doctors appointments Mom always had time for me, time to make sure I felt loved, appreciated and encouraged in my desire to help families going through health challenges.
My mom allowed and even encouraged me to be a part of Will's therapy sessions at the clinic and at home. I would find fund and crazy ways to help make Wills therapy fun and not a chore. I believe this is actually where my desire to help people and to become a pediatrician came from. My moms dedication, perseverance, faith and unwavering Love have been an example and compass for me. I'm proud when people tell me that I'm a lot like my mom.
I'll never forget those hard years where Will would have night time seizures and he couldn't come out of the seizure without intense medical intervention at the hospital. I could see the strain and lack of sleep was affecting everyone including my mom, but she still showed such love and compassion. We all saw God show up when my parents asked the Elders to lay hands on Will and pray over him. He had one more seizure that week and hasn't had one since. Will has been seizure free for several years now.
My Mother's selflessness and commitment to serve others have instilled a deep sense of responsibility to use the gifts God has given me to help others. What I experienced growing up with Will, has reinforced my desire to pursue a career in medicine, with a focus on pediatrics. My mother has taught me that every child is valuable, deserving of life and quality healthcare. As a pediatrician I want to serve children and their families as they are going through health challenges.

As a Bio Medical Science student I deeply believe our world shows tremendous evidence of design for several reasons.
First logically we have something that exists, the universe. Either it has always existed or it came into being. Since it is expanding this points to the fact that the universe came into being at some point. No one has ever observed something coming from nothing so to believe that something as complex as the universe came from nothing seems ridiculous.
Secondly take for example the human heart and circulatory system that we have been studying in class. I couldn't help but be amazed as the professor taught about the synchronized beating of the human heart. The Heart is a masterpiece of engineering. By the time the average person reaches 60 years old their heart will have pumped over a Billion times! There is no modern pump created humans that can achieve that remarkable feat, and were surrounded by millions of these God designed pumps beating next to us everyday and we never really think about how intricate and complex each one of them is. Each component of the heart serves a specific function and without even one of these parts this amazing pump will degrade and cease to function. You can't look deeply at the human heart and not be impressed by it's design, I find it impossible to attribute such complexity to random chance.
Another anecdote that solidifies my belief in a creator is the DNA molecule. When Crick and Watson unwound the structure of DNA back in 1953, they shed light on one of the strongest evidences that life was designed. You can't help but be amazed by it's complexity, from the intricate sequence of nucleotides arranged in such a precise order. Where you have the blue print information layed out in two dimensions, that will then be used to create a three dimensional being. The information encoded here governs all of an organisms development. No one has been able to explain exactly where that information comes from since Darwinian evolution would cause a decrease in information and not a gain. If we observe information then that would logically lead us to a information giver.
In conclusion it takes faith to believe that everything came from nothing and that everything which shows so much complexity and design came about first from nothing and then by random chance. Those odds would be astronomical and mind blowing. As more scientific discoveries are made they keep stacking up evidence that there is an intelligent designer behind everything that exists.

I became involved in mentoring a group of middle school girls, where I provided them guidance, support, and encouragement as we met together every week for two years. This time serving as a mentor reinforced my passion for helping others and making a positive impact in their lives.
What I experienced in rural Guatemala, and with my middle school girls has reinforced my desire to pursue a career in medicine, with a focus on pediatrics. I believe that every child is valuable and deserves quality healthcare, no matter where they live or the income of their parents. As a pediatrician I want to use my education and abilities to support and serve children and their families here and abroad.
I am drawn to the idea of helping those in need, especially in locations where the needs are so great. Through my future career, I hope to not only treat illnesses, but to also walk beside and encourage families walking through these Health challenges. I have a younger brother who was born with cerebral palsy, and I have seen first hand how important it is to have caring Doctors and Nurses walk beside the family through these hard times.
I am very grateful that you would take the time to consider my application for the Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship. This scholarship would help me to continue my journey to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others through the field of medicine.
Thank you for your time.

Arthur and Elana Panos Scholarship
As a college Sophomore whose faith in Jesus Christ has been essential in helping my family through some of the challenges associated with having a sibling who was born with Cerebral Palsy, I would love the opportunity to share our story with you.
My brother Will had a stroke in-utero, and due to that was born with Cerebral Palsy. Growing up with a younger sibling who has cerebral palsy has been both a tremendous blessing and tremendous challenge for our family. When I was younger I didn’t really understand all the challenges that Will faced and I just understood it from my limited perspective, like how he drooled a lot. I began to understand why I would have to help distract Will every night while my Dad would stretch his muscles. I knew it was really hard for Will and my Dad. My Dad helped me to see how this was similar to how God allows pain and discomfort into our lives and we have to trust that God loves us and knows what is best for us.
Little did we know at the time that there were going to be far scarier nights ahead for our family.
God used this hard time to draw each of us closer to him, I would have to pray just to fall asleep. I still remember when the Elders of our church prayed and put their hands on Will. Will only had one more seizure 3 days later and hasn’t had a seizure since. Through all of this Will would never let anything slow him down and his faith and great attitude have been a constant source of inspiration us.
What I experienced growing up with Will, has reinforced my desire to pursue a career in medicine, with a focus on pediatrics. I believe that every child is created by our heavenly father and deserving of quality healthcare. As a pediatrician I want to serve children going through health challenges especially in areas where medical professionals are not plentiful. I want to use medicine as a way to reflect my creator and his love for these children and their families.
Thanks for taking the time to read my essay and consider me for this scholarship,

Walking In Authority International Ministry Scholarship
Dear Scholarship Committee,
Thank you for taking the time to consider me for the Walking In Authority International Ministry Scholarship. As a college Sophomore, I am passionate about serving others through volunteering, and would love the opportunity to share my story and my dreams for the future with you.
I have been taking summer trips to rural Guatemala with my Dad since I was in the 4th grade. I think this is where my passion for serving kids and their families really began. While there I have had the privilege of volunteering in a children’s hospital, as well as a handicapped children’s home. It opened my eyes and my heart to the challenges faced by poor families in these areas. I was inspired by the love, strength, compassion and generosity of these families, and the team of Doctors and Nurses that walked next to them in spite of their limited resources.

The workload for being a BioMed major has made it impossible for me personally to work during the semester so I work as a Cashier at Harris Teeter over the summer and Christmas.

One of the greatest lessons that I've learned from Will is the value and worth of every human being has because of being created in the image of God. Despite Will’s challenges related to cerebral palsy, his life is precious and reflects the creator who made him. I am so blessed to have Will as my younger brother, I can’t imagine life without him. There is no way that after growing up next to Will I could be anything other than PRO-LIFE.
What I experienced growing up with Will, has reinforced my desire to pursue a career in medicine, with a focus on pediatrics. I believe that every child is valuable, deserving of life and quality healthcare. As a pediatrician I want to serve children going through health challenges.
