I am a first-generation Psychology student at Northeastern Illinois University pursuing a career in substance abuse counseling and mental health. As an immigrant pursuing a college degree in my second language, I have learned to navigate higher education without the guidance many students take for granted. While working full-time and paying for my education out of pocket, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA through discipline, resilience, and determination. This past semester, I was honored to be named to the Dean's List, reaffirming my belief that perseverance, purpose, and hard work can overcome even the most difficult obstacles. My goal is to become a therapist who helps people facing addiction, trauma, and mental health challenges. I believe everyone deserves access to compassionate, evidence-based mental-health care, regardless of their background or financial circumstances. Success, to me, is measured by the lives we improve, not simply by our achievements. Returning to college as an adult required the courage to begin again. Neither of my parents had the opportunity to earn a college degree, so every milestone I reach represents a new path for my family. There was no roadmap—only long workdays, late nights studying, and the belief that education could change my future. I hope my journey encourages others to believe their dreams are achievable. I don't see education as a personal achievement; I see it as a responsibility. My purpose is to use what I learn to help people discover that their past does not have to define their future.
