Being a Black Latina who is an English major heading off to law school to become an attorney, I realize my schooling is a victory, not even that—it's a force of change. In the long term, my plan is to become a Supreme Court Justice and use what I understand about the law to advocate for justice, equity, and representation. The justice system has historically marginalized Black and Latino communities, and I am determined to speak out for the voiceless. By pursuing higher education, I will empower my people, fight for systemic reform, and motivate the next generation of leaders. I was raised observing the injustices that disproportionately affected Black and Latino communities. From the minority community schools being underfunded to racial imbalance in the criminal justice system, I have seen firsthand how the laws and policies too often don't protect the vulnerable. Too many in my community are left behind by system barriers, and I am committed to using my legal education to break down those barriers.
Studying English has made me stronger at analytically comprehending complex texts, making sound arguments, and articulating myself well—skills that will prove useful with a lawyer and future judge. Being able to read judgespeak and battle for equitable policies will place me better able to effectively challenge discriminatory bills and bring justice to everyone, not privileged few.
Being a Black Latina myself, I know firsthand the power of seeing someone who resembles you as a leader. The legal profession, however, is not diverse, especially at its highest level. The fact that Black and Latina women are not represented on the Supreme Court has motivated me to break down barriers and push others to pursue a career as lawyers. I would like to inform girls in my community that they can also be lawyers, judges, and policymakers. Along with my own law practice, I will also concentrate on mentoring students of color, encouraging diversity in law schools and courtrooms, and creating opportunities for the next generation. With mere determination and persistence, I intend to demonstrate that our voice and vision are needed if we are to find a just and equitable society. The law community is one of the most powerful forums for change. I eagerly anticipate employing my practice of law to further policies of racial justice, educational equity, and criminal justice reform. Whether it is fighting for fair sentencing laws, preventing voter suppression, or ensuring equal access to quality education, my mission will always be to raise up marginalized communities.
Education remains my anchor, law is my vehicle, and justice is my destination. With persistence and determination, not only will I achieve my dream as a Supreme Court Justice but also create positive change that can last.
