Bold Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
While there are so many populations that are failing to have their mental health needs met, one of the largest is college students. Each campus across America is filled with thousands of young adults who are experiencing being away from home and the stresses of living as an adult for the first time. There is no transition period. Instead, they are thrown into the deep end of new social, emotional, and intellectual experiences that can be extremely overwhelming. A new type of care needs to be given to these students. Something that would change the way adolescents experience college and could prevent a lot of mental health crises would be assigning each new college student to a mental health counselor or therapist once they begin school. This would ensure students address their feelings regarding this drastic life change. Students already get an academic advisor so it is clearly possible to organize a therapist as well for each student. It would also keep the school accountable for making sure their student's well-being is being monitored. Instead of being lost with no one to turn to, new students would have the perfect person to call on if they were struggling. In addition, the students would not feel weird or wrong for experiencing negative emotions at the start of college. They could get validation and helpful tactics from their therapist that could benefit the students greatly. Not only would providing a specific counselor for each student benefit the student personally, but it would also create a more positive community at each university as well.
