Cindy J. Visser Memorial Nursing Scholarship
When looking at programs, nursing had always stood out to me. When I was a child, I witnessed thousands of wonderful nurses care for my grandfather. My grandfather had type one diabetes as well as kidney disease, heart disease, mental health issues, and drug addiction issues. Over the years, I saw many nurses come in and out of my house. Every single one of them took such great care of him, not judging him for what happened that time. Whether it was a low blood sugar or a drug overdose, these wonderful people never judged. They just took care of him with kindness and respect. They made sure that we were taken care of too. When I was 5, the home health nurse paid us a visit. My grandpa had overdosed on pills right before they showed up for his scheduled appointment. The two nurses, one with pretty brown hair, the other with beautiful blonde assessed him, determined what was wrong and called him an ambulance. This entire time, they also made sure I knew that everything was going to be alright. They spoke softly and provided reassurance to my five year old self that it was okay. The nurse with the brown hair went and got me a cat stuffed animal out of her car once the ambulance arrived to put my little mind at ease. She then gave me a bandaid and some gauze to help “heal” my new cat. This nurse went out of her way to show me kindness during what was a hard time for me as a small child. This kindness made me want to be just like her. A kind, thoughtful, respectful registered nurse. From age 5, I knew that I needed to be in a profession that provided for people. That showed others care and respect. During my career as a nurse I hope to become a trusted caregiver. I hope to become someone who can provide medical care to the people who really need it, the people who would otherwise be cast aside or disrespected while receiving care. I want to be an advocate for the underserved and carry on the values and traits that Cindy exemplified like empathy and compassion for all. I intend to show these traits along with professionalism just as Cindy once showed. I cannot wait to become a nurse and provide the level of care that i saw provided to my grandfather. Becoming a nurse is my dream and this scholarship would help achieve that.
