Once my school shut down because of COVID-19, it felt like my clock started ticking. I thought to myself, “Will I turn my athlete image to dust, my “one-of-the-guys” status into debris? Yes. I’m a kid with an explosive strapped to me. A truth that could crater my entire existence and fling shrapnel into the future my parents dream for me; the future that I’ve dreamed for myself. Suddenly I find those dreams disappearing within seconds because of the demoralizing effect of feeling imprisoned. COVID has forced me to feel uncomfortable and exhausted. The feeling of being drained physically and emotionally was only the beginning. It became my responsibility to finish what I started in school, but I didn’t realize the journey during this path I was forced to take would be so complex. While in quarantine, I remained stagnant between deciding what I wanted and who I wanted to be. Attempting to “find myself” with everything shut down felt nearly impossible. Back when school was available, people saw me as a dedicated, serious, passionate, happy person. But where is he? What happened to him? He left me behind hopeless and broken without even a goodbye. Once he walked out that door he left me torn, teaching me to live without it. That was the past, and the reality is I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m scared--scared of the possibilities that I will not seize to meet my future self. To live while being successful and happy with what they have. Happy with who they’ve become. How coming to the realization where I commence to find love, not in others, but myself. I’ve been searching for these answers but was left empty-handed. It was like a constant battle of fear versus happiness. There were times where I wanted to feel like I am living and not just merely existing. Going from an optimistic teenage boy in high school to a melancholic teenage boy in quarantine that is stuck in his thoughts constantly. I felt like my teenage years thus far was limbo. I was somewhere between being a kid and an adult and society insist that I should be mature and express myself but the minute that I do, it tells me to shut up, but I knew that I couldn’t allow this pandemic to corrupt me. Something that I have learned from my experience during COVID-19 thus far is that wholehearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. The method of cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, “No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.” It’s going to bed at night and thinking, “Yes, I’m imperfect, vulnerable, and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I’m also capable of being brave and worthy of love and belonging.”
