I am eager to contribute to research and evidence-based practice in ostomy education, to reduce readmissions, skin complications, and anxiety, and to promote patient-centered care across diverse populations.

Growing up in Canton, Georgia, I learned early that health is more than what happens in a hospital room. It is the daily rhythm of a family learning to cope with a new diagnosis, a senior citizen navigating transportation to a clinic, a child who fears a shot because no one has explained why it’s needed. Now, as a nursing student, I am committed to turning that understanding into action—starting in Canton and radiating outward to the world. Currently, I am actively strengthening my community in small, practical ways. I volunteer at a local clinic that serves underserved families, helping patients fill out forms, navigate insurance, and understand their medications. I organize simple health education sessions at school and in faith communities, using plain language and visuals to explain chronic diseases, vaccines, and how to stay healthy on a tight budget. I have seen how a 15-minute conversation can calm a worried parent, how a blood pressure screen can catch a risk before it becomes a crisis, and how a bilingual flyer can make a family more comfortable seeking care. These experiences have taught me that real change starts with trust, listening, and accessible information. When I finish college and begin my nursing career, I plan to build a multi-faceted approach to improving health locally and beyond. First, I want to practice in Canton as a registered nurse with a focus on preventive care and community health. I believe that nurses are uniquely positioned to blend clinical care with education, follow-up, and advocacy. I also plan to pursue advanced training to become a Family Nurse Practitioner, so I can provide ongoing, comprehensive care and reduce unnecessary emergency visits through preventive services and early intervention. Second, I want to expand access to care through a mobile health initiative. A nurse-led mobile clinic could visit neighborhoods, schools, and senior centers to provide screenings (blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol), vaccination clinics, and brief mental health check-ins. By partnering with local churches, community centers, and schools, we can meet people where they are, offer transportation solutions, and reduce barriers created by work schedules, costs, and transportation. Third, I will prioritize health literacy and mental well-being. I intend to create simple, culturally responsive education materials and offer workshops that empower families to manage chronic conditions, navigate medications, and improve nutrition and physical activity within their budgets. I also want to create a network of peer health mentors who can support new families, adolescents, and recent immigrants in Canton—strengthening social ties that are proven to improve health outcomes. Finally, I refuse to view “local” as short-sighted. The world will benefit when we design solutions that are scalable and sustainable. I hope to participate in international nursing outreach or telehealth collaborations that bring nurse-led education and preventive care to resource-limited communities, while adapting lessons learned in Canton to diverse settings. My ultimate goal is a ripple effect: healthier Canton residents, healthier families across Georgia, and a model of nurse-led, community-centered care that others can adapt globally. The clinic would offer sliding-scale fees, telehealth options, and mobile outreach to rural areas where access to care is limited. Crucially, it would also serve as a training ground for nursing students and new nurses, giving them hands-on experience in holistic, team-based care while modeling ethical leadership and patient advocacy. By partnering with local schools, faith groups, and public health organizations, the clinic could amplify preventive services, vaccination drives, chronic disease management, and mental health support—areas where timely intervention can alter life trajectories. To turn this vision into reality, I plan to complete a BSN with experiences in community health, then pursue advanced practice training such as a nurse practitioner degree or a Master of Public Health. I will seek out leadership roles in student nursing associations, community health internships, and collaborations with local clinics to learn the mechanics of running a patient-centered program and navigating funding streams. I would build a solid plan for sustainable financing—grants from foundations, partnerships with hospital systems for care coordination, and a mix of service contracts and community fundraising—so the clinic can remain accessible even as it grows. A phased approach would launch a pilot in a single neighborhood, measure outcomes like appointment access, patient satisfaction, and readmission rates, and expand responsibly as data guide expansion. In shining my light, I lean on a few core commitments. First, empathy in every interaction—truly listening to patients, decoding medical language, and honoring cultural differences. Second, advocacy as routine practice—speaking up for patients’ needs, championing health equity, and mentoring younger students to become informed, compassionate clinicians. Third, lifelong learning—staying current with evidence-based care, integrating nutrition, mental health, and social determinants of health into care plans, and sharing knowledge through community workshops and peer education. Fourth, teamwork—collaborating with physicians, social workers, translators, and community leaders to create a seamless care experience. I would like to help establish a community-based program that pairs college students with young people in single-parent households for academic support, college readiness workshops, and career guidance. I also want to advocate for policies that ease the burden on single-parent families: affordable childcare on campus, flexible class scheduling, and scholarships targeted at students who carry family responsibilities. Eventually, I hope to return to my neighborhood as an educator or administrator who designs inclusive curricula and resources that reflect the realities of single-parent households. If I can help another student discover that college is within reach, if I can provide a map through the maze of financial aid, if I can create a network of mentors who believe in them—that will be my contribution to a more equitable future. Education changed my life, and I intend to pay that change forward.
