Being born in the Dominican Republic and having foreign-born parents has profoundly shaped my academic experience and future goals. Growing up, I often felt like I was straddling two worlds—one rooted in my Dominican heritage and the other in the American educational system. My parents, who moved to the U.S. seeking better opportunities, have always emphasized the importance of education. However, they didn’t have firsthand experience with the U.S. education system, so I often found myself navigating it on my own. This experience has made me resourceful and self-reliant, but it has also motivated me to help others in similar situations. When I started school in the U.S., there were many aspects of the system that felt unfamiliar to me. The application processes, standardized tests, and college requirements were all new challenges. My parents could offer emotional support, but they couldn’t guide me through the academic intricacies. As a first-generation student, I quickly realized that I needed to be proactive in seeking out resources and learning how to advocate for myself. This meant asking teachers for help, researching opportunities, and building a network of mentors to guide me. Over time, I grew more confident in navigating the system, but I also became aware of how many others—especially students from immigrant backgrounds—might not have the same tools to succeed. This experience has shaped my academic mindset in a number of ways. First, it has taught me the importance of resilience. I’ve faced obstacles that felt daunting at times, but I’ve learned to push through by focusing on the long-term goals and taking small, manageable steps. It’s also instilled a deep sense of purpose in me. I realize that education is not only a personal achievement but also a tool for creating change and breaking cycles of limited opportunity. Seeing how much my parents have sacrificed for our future motivates me to do the same, working toward a career where I can help others—particularly first-generation students—navigate their own paths to success. My background has also influenced my future academic and career goals. I’m passionate about using my education to help bridge the gaps that many students from immigrant families face. Whether it’s offering mentorship, advocating for more inclusive educational opportunities, or simply being a role model, I want to use my experiences to create more pathways for success. I’ve seen how powerful education can be in changing lives, and I want to be part of efforts that help others unlock their potential, just as I’ve worked to unlock mine. Ultimately, having foreign-born parents has not only shaped how I approach my education but also how I see my future. It’s given me a sense of responsibility to break barriers, help others, and create more opportunities for those who might face the same challenges I’ve encountered. I am determined to make a difference, and I know that the lessons I’ve learned from my background will continue to guide me toward a future where I can positively impact the lives of others.

One significant moment of adversity I faced was during my journey as a first-generation student. Growing up, I didn't have family members who could guide me through the educational system, which often made things feel overwhelming, especially when I started navigating the college application process. From researching schools to understanding financial aid options and writing personal statements, it felt like there were so many unknowns, and at times, I wasn’t sure where to start or who to turn to. One of the toughest moments was when I hit a roadblock with one of my college applications. The essay required me to reflect deeply on personal experiences and challenges, which made me realize how much pressure I was putting on myself to succeed, not only for my future but also for my family. It was difficult to express my thoughts clearly, and I felt stuck, questioning if I was capable of presenting myself in a way that would resonate with admissions officers. I overcame this adversity by focusing on the bigger picture—reminding myself why I was applying to college in the first place: to create a better future for myself and to make my family proud. I reached out to teachers, mentors, and friends for support. Their feedback helped me see my strengths more clearly and gave me the encouragement I needed to keep pushing forward. I also broke down the process into smaller, manageable tasks so I wouldn’t feel overwhelmed by the bigger picture. With each small step, my confidence grew, and eventually, I was able to submit my applications with a sense of accomplishment. This experience shaped me by teaching me the value of perseverance and seeking support when needed. It also helped me build resilience, knowing that I could overcome challenges even when the road seemed unclear. Now, I know that setbacks are a part of the process and that persistence is key to achieving my goals. For someone facing similar circumstances, my advice would be to remember that you don’t have to have everything figured out right away. Take things one step at a time, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from those who have been through the process. It’s also important to stay focused on your ultimate goal and remind yourself why you’re doing this. Adversity can feel overwhelming in the moment, but with persistence, support, and a clear sense of purpose, you’ll come out stronger on the other side.

I’m currently a student at Bronx Center for Science and Math, where I’m constantly seeking out opportunities to challenge myself and grow. I’m involved in a number of extracurricular activities that help me develop as both a leader and a contributor to my school community. As a secretary for the Student Voice Committee, I have the opportunity to help facilitate communication and ensure that students’ voices are heard in important decision-making processes. I’m also part of the Emerging Leaders Program, where I’ve been able to refine my leadership skills and build connections with peers who share my drive for growth and service. In addition to my academic and leadership commitments, I have a strong passion for photography, which allows me to explore different styles and concepts while capturing moments that tell stories. Photography has become an important way for me to express my creativity, and I’m always looking for ways to share my work and engage with others through this art form. Being a first-generation student has also been an integral part of my experience. It has shaped how I approach challenges and success. I’ve learned to navigate the educational system independently, seeking out opportunities and support along the way. I want to be a role model for others in my family, particularly my younger cousins, showing them that hard work and perseverance are the keys to achieving their own dreams. Looking ahead, I plan to pursue higher education and eventually embark on a career that allows me to make a meaningful impact, especially in areas where I can inspire others and help create positive change. Whether through leadership roles, creative projects, or advocacy, I’m committed to using my skills and experiences to contribute to the world around me. If I could start my own charity, I would focus on creating a nonprofit organization that empowers young people to overcome educational barriers and unlock their potential. The mission would be to provide mentorship, resources, and opportunities for first-generation students who may not have access to the same support networks that others do. I would aim to help students not only succeed academically but also develop the skills they need to thrive personally and professionally. The charity would serve young people from underserved communities, especially those who face challenges related to navigating the education system without the support of family members who have gone through it themselves. Volunteers would offer a range of services, including tutoring, career coaching, and leadership training. They would also serve as mentors, guiding students through the challenges they face and offering advice on everything from college applications to personal development. The goal would be to provide students with the tools, knowledge, and confidence they need to succeed, both in school and beyond. Through this charity, I hope to create a ripple effect, empowering young people to achieve their goals, break barriers, and ultimately give back to their communities. I believe that when you invest in the future of young people, you invest in a brighter future for everyone.

One of the most significant moments in my life occurred during a conversation with my aunt. She has always been an inspiration to me, particularly due to her determination and success in a field related to architecture. We were sitting together one evening after dinner, talking about the future. She shared the challenges she faced when she first started her career and how she pushed through doubts and setbacks to reach her goals. Her words resonated deeply with me because they were a reminder that success doesn’t come easily—it’s something that requires perseverance and a clear vision. What makes her so important to me is not just her accomplishments, but how she has always supported and encouraged me to pursue my own dreams. Her belief in my potential has been a driving force in my life. She has shown me the value of hard work, resilience, and continuous growth. Her approach to life—facing challenges head-on and staying focused on the bigger picture—has taught me that setbacks are part of the process, not the end of it. Whenever I feel uncertain about my own path, I think back to that conversation and remember her example. She’s shown me that no matter where I start, I can make a difference and achieve my goals if I remain committed. As a first-generation student, I’ve had to navigate many challenges on my own, without the benefit of previous family experiences to guide me through the educational system. There were times when I felt overwhelmed by the expectations of balancing academic work, extracurricular activities, and finding my own place in an environment that often felt unfamiliar. My aunt’s journey has been particularly important in this context. She has been there to offer advice, share her experiences, and remind me that my success is not just a reflection of academic achievements but also of personal growth and resilience. Being a first-generation student has shaped my perspective on education. I’ve had to rely on my own determination to understand the system, advocate for myself, and seek out opportunities. I know that my journey is not just about me—it’s about paving the way for future generations in my family. I want to be a role model for my younger cousins, showing them that education is a pathway to growth, not just for personal achievement but also for the betterment of the family as a whole. My experiences as a first-generation student have taught me the importance of hard work, adaptability, and the ability to learn from others, especially those who have been through similar challenges. In many ways, my aunt’s influence has helped me navigate the challenges of being a first-generation student. Her support and wisdom have been invaluable in helping me balance my responsibilities, overcome obstacles, and keep my eyes on the long-term goals. She is more than just family—she’s a mentor, someone who has shown me that with dedication and persistence, I can achieve anything. Her impact on my life is profound, and I strive every day to honor the lessons she’s taught me.

As I move forward in life, I want to make a positive impact not only in my own life but also in the lives of others, especially within my family and school community. In my academic journey, I’ve always sought opportunities that challenge me, whether through AP classes, National Honor Societies, or leadership roles. These experiences have taught me that growth comes from pushing myself and stepping outside my comfort zone. Through my involvement with the Student Voice Committee, I’ve gained insight into how to amplify others' voices and create a more inclusive and open environment. I plan to continue fostering these qualities, advocating for students' ideas and encouraging a culture of collaboration. Being a secretary for the Student Voice Committee has taught me the importance of communication, organization, and listening—skills I believe are essential for creating positive change. I’m also a firm believer in the power of leadership and its ability to inspire others to take action. I’m involved in the Emerging Leaders Program, where I’ve learned how to guide, motivate, and support my peers. Her drive for success in a field related to architecture has always been something I’ve admired. She’s shown me how dedication, hard work, and resilience can lead to meaningful accomplishments. I want to follow in her footsteps by not only achieving my own goals but also by encouraging others in my family to pursue their dreams with the same commitment and passion. Another area where I plan to make an impact is through my photography. I’m passionate about capturing moments that tell a story and challenge perceptions. Photography allows me to reflect on the world around me and share my vision with others. It’s a way for me to express myself and engage with my community on a deeper level. I plan to continue exploring this art form and sharing it with those around me, whether by creating exhibitions or simply using my photos to spark meaningful conversations. Art has the ability to bring people together, and I believe it’s a powerful tool for spreading ideas and opening minds. Ultimately, I want to be someone who makes a positive impact by inspiring others to grow, challenge themselves, and believe in their potential.
